How To: interior for display case (image heavy)

Bruce,

We actually have some high density foam at work. It's hard enough to stand on and not even sink into it. We also have a $150,000 CNC router (still waiting for power to be hooked up) to mill the stuff for custom fit equipment casings. Overkill for us really but apparently they had money to burn last year :D Of course, I can guarantee it would take me longer to CAD the layout for a box like yours than it takes for you completely finish one they way you do it :)

I wish I could use CNC sometimes but believe I never will. I think I'm "old school" in most things. Its amazing to me to see kids in productions shops that make programs and flip switches and out pops a finished rocket laucher. :D

Hey why dont you do some dumster diving for some of that foam? :)

Bruce,
Thanks for the tips you bring to us. It is great to have someone of your caliber (pun intended:)) show your process. Keep it up!

Thanks to everybody who appreciates these WIP threads. I like to do them and as long as you guys read em I'll keep it up. Most of what I know was learned from mistakes and money spent wrong. Knifemaking can be cheap to do or cost a fortune. I work at it everyday and look forward to Mondays. Ya cant say that about most jobs.

bruce...as always i have enjoyed this thread.....i had a conversation about something that i just thought about this thread today.....i used to design custom wedding cakes and big fancy elaborate cakes that costs boatloads of money....and someone was asking me today about making them....and i said to her....it's not hard-it just takes alot of time.....i think the same is sort of true about alot of knifemaking....alot of the aspects that you and other makers talk about -if you take tyour time....think things thru and try not to make the same mistake twice you'll always be better than your last knife or gun or in your case both!.....thanks for breaking down these knives into easy to understand steps for guys like me....i really appreciate it.....ryan:thumbup::thumbup:

Oh, I think there's some little "leftover" pieces laying around. Maybe the postman will deliver a sample package of them to you. :D I'll see what I can do.

thats generally what we do ,

thats i believe closed cell medium or high density foam ,

i frogot what comes with the pelican / storm cases ..

but yes the material is most likely hard enough to flock ,

although i cant guarantee it ,

there are foam places on the internet that sell the foam that you could order a small piece of to try out

and that sounds wrong , i didnt do that particular case, not trying to take credit for someones work , just found one online that looks top notch

Erik, That would be great. I'll rebate you for the shipping at least.

Thanks for the picture Harley. That is cool but too modern looking for my stuff. Wow they can sure fit the guns in tight, must be CNC by somebody smart enough to do it.

I like that foam, maybe wetted felt would conform into the impressions. It would be nice and cushioned.

Here it is, The flocking we've all been waiting for:

Thanks for coming back. What do you think of it?

Absolutely over the top, Bruce. The way all those curves flow around the parts make this one of the most appealing of your beautiful creations.
What fun you must have thinking of how your work will be delighting people for centuries to come!

John

Hey Bruce, my neighbor has a CNC wood router. He can just program the design into the computer, and start it up, and lets it do work. He can make pretty amazing things, and it's got a vacuum table to hold the work down.

Completely and utterly amazing. I'm sure there must be something you can see wrong, but don't worry -- no one else will find it.
