How to make kydex the cost effective way

This a great idea, thanks for sharing!

I share the reservations about the degrading /puncturing problems , but as a warm up for a kydex project or a cheap plan B for protecting edged items for storage etc , it's great! Thanks again.

I used to use plastic icecream containers and they've held up over a good few years.I was expecting them to become brittle but so far they've held up well.I even used them to make liners in plastic and leather sheathes.

Neat idea - could save some cash, but I don't think kydex is that expensive and I trust the strength of kydex where the other materials may be suspect. I am only talking of like an acidental fall or something - it could end up bad if the blade comes though the other material.

Hmmm,

I like that. I could put that to use out here in the desert. I'm going to give it a try when my Izula gets here. There is a whole bunch of plastic around here.

I wasn't thinking so much as using the cartons as a sheath for an EDC or heavy use knife.

I was going along the lines of using the orange colored laundry bottles for my small knives that I take out in my cooking kit for day hikes, my knives in my different bags that don't have sheaths (think fishing knives) and to help keep clean the little teeny knife I keep in my fist aid kit.

Great tip!

I have to say it.
Heating up PVC in your home without the use of exhaust fans and a respirator is one of the worst ideas I can imagine.
Eventually you will die from that.
That being said, cool sheath.
I would just do it outdoors next time. PVC is some bad stuff.

Actually, my best machete sheath was made from sections cut out of a plastic Chevy tailgate cap. I just traced the outline, cut the pieces on my bandsaw along with a spacer strip for the spine of the sheath and glued it all up with some all-purpose PVC / ABS cement after I riveted a belt loop to one side. Covered it in some digi woodland material using a poly based spray adhesive (boat stuff) and voila.

Smaller sized kydex is pretty cheap IMO. I've bent some using a 9.99 Harbor Freight heat gun that has held up great. I use it for all sorts of things.
