  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

How to make spoons

I'd find some iron oxide , make charcoal, mix and heat the two to make wrought iron, then hammer out a spoon. But then I'm a metallurgist !
For the rest of you , use hardwoods, ash, maple fruit woods.

"Hardhack" or "Ironwood" (Eastern Hophornbeam) makes excellent spoons. I made my first spoon out of it this week while camping, before reading this:

I was looking for a suitable piece of beech, but didn't want to cut down a live one, so I used some hardhack I found already down and dry. Turns out it was a good choice....

I have an excellent crooked knife from Frosts (or is it Eriksson?) that I would have used if I knew in advance I was going to be doing it, AND I found a suitable way to safely carry that knife. I guess I'll have to make up some kind of flexible leather sheath that will slide down the blade so I can throw it in my pack.
