My bm710 has a bit of vertical up and down bladeplay, more than a wiggle.. not so much that it moves up and down... but its most definitely there....

The axis lock is already fully engaged forward. How do i get rid of the bladeplay??

By "fully engaged", so you mean that the AXIS bar is at the end of its track, completely forward against the scale cut-out? If so, the only thing I can think of that you could try would be a slightly larger diameter stop pin. But my first suggestion would be to send it in to Benchmade.

Is this a common problem with the 710s?

It depends on what each user defines as blade play. All folding knives, regardless of lock type, exhibit vertical blade play, even those that "lock up tight as a vault" (albeit minute). It depends how hard the user wiggles or pushes on the spine, and how perceptive the user is in noticing it occur.

The noticeable amount of play in the original poster's 710 probably isn't very common.

Tetsusaiga, how long have you had the knife and what kind of work has it seen?

The problem is that it came like that to me..

Let me clarify... my bad.. I should have state this in my original post... it's a blade replacement job done by Chase Axinn and i got it off someone in BF.. I was aware of the bladeplay before I got it... there's no way I can send it in to BM.... was just thinking if there is anything I can do on my part to correct it??

I've got a little horizontal blade play with the axis lock almost fully tightened. I would send it in. When I can't stand the horizontal play in mine any longer, thats what I'll do.

Since you've already tried tightening it, I would e-mail Chase. He'll probably have you send it to him so he can tweek the tang/pin.

I resemble that remark. Can't agree.

Hi Tetsusaiga,
I own three BM 710 HS and one of them shows this little wiggle you mentioned.
I believe that it has one of two reasons, either the liners are not completly straight or the part of the tang where the axisbar rests is not ground properly. With my knife it was the latter problem (for the most part).

I solved that problem by "regrinding" the tang with a little help of my Edge Pro Professional Scissors Attachment. The vertical play is almost completly gone now.

Hope that helps,

Daniel

Daniel, I was thinking about the same thing.. if it has vertical bladeplay despite the axis bar locking fully forward, doesn't this mean that the tang part of the blade that contacts the axis bar was ground off more than it should have been???

Shouldn't we be "adding" material more than "grinding" off material??

I had blade play on my Microtech Socom and called Microtech and they said there should be little to none on their knives. They said that if it bothered me enought to call them it is probably to much. I had to send it in. Although they say it will take 4 to 6 weeks before I see it again. So for right now I will carry the Skirmish on my belt and Emerson Mini Com. in my pocket until I get the Socom back.

Just send it in.

I'm having the blade replaced on my Benchmade 911 activator after a local cutlery shop was kind enough to... Extend the edge grind up one side of the blade for me.

Benchmade is charging me $35.00 for the blade replacement, which is discounted from the regular $45.00 for the D2 steel. Either way, this beats spending $100.00 plus on a new knife.

You are better off having Benchmade do their warranty magic, and returning it to the condition it should be in, then trying to fix it yourself.

As for why I don't go after the cutlery shop, if anyone is wondering that; it's because they're the only actual Knife Dealer I've found in my area. I just won't be getting any more knives sharpened there. :D

Will BM warranty even touch it since it has an aftermarket blade? No offense meant, just curious.

er.. my concern exactly.. am sure that the warranty has already been voided by the after market blade swap..

Best thing you could to answer that question would be to call them. I'd guess that if they are willing to work on it they would charge you.

Every benchmade axis I've got exhibits a small amount of vertical bladeplay. It doesn't really bother me but i would imagine it is a result of wear between the axis bar and tang. Its weird that some ppl on here say that they have axis folders that exhibit no vertical blade play after owning them a while. Every axis lock I've seen has developed a bit of vertical play over time.
