How to stop a 2 month old puppy from barking

Thats what dogs do, they bark. I have had a dog my whole life and I'm immune to the barking. It usually gets better as they mature, sometimes.:D

Here's an interesting piece of information. Can't recall where I read this, though. Barking is a behavioral trait that is restricted to domesticated dogs only. Apparently non domesticated Canids don't bark at all.

One more way to get your dog to stop barking. I understand that if you train your dog to bark on command, such as "Speak Fido, speak," he will only bark on command. I don't know if this is true, though, cause I haven't gone to the trouble to do that with my crew.

I take it that your pup is kept outside in your 10' x 10' pen. Too many unfamiliar sounds & smells for the pup to react too. I've had Scottie pups (one at a time) that were kept in the kitchen (linoleum floor worked great for little accidents) at bedtime with the door between the kitchen & living room closed. They both did a little yapping but after ignoring the yapping for about a week, the pups finally realized this was bedtime and they should be curled up sleeping in their cardboard box bed. Don't make the mistake of talking to him or picking him up during these 'yapping' times. Don't even yell at him to 'shut up'! This worked for me... hope it helps. Good luck to you and the new pup. ;)

My puppies have always slept in bed with me, so barking was never an issue. Good luck!!

Indeed!! All the puppies that I have had, I have never had any problems with barking. And my 5 1/2 year old Shiba Inu, only barks when absolutely necessary.

Hit it until it stops yapping which is a tried and true method in my experience.

A barking muzzle worked well for two of my dogs. When they would start barking the muzzle went on. It allowed them to breath and keep thier nose moist but they could not bark. After a few times all it took was showing them the muzzle and they shut up.

I don't know about Geno, but if you put a barking collar on me, I can assure you I wouldn't bark any more. If it works so well on me, just imagine how well it would work on an animal of superior intelligence like a dog. I absolutely adore dogs and this is how I would handle it. The collar may sound cruel but dogs learn quickly and so the cruelty is very short lived.

Any vet can quickly quiet the dog. The dog will still bark and enjoy barking, but no sound will come out.

I don't if you've heard of Cesar Millan, he has a show called 'The Dog Whisperer' on the National Georgraphic Channel. Great show on how he helps dog owners take control of their pets. He has a DVD out and I think a book as well. Definately worth looking into.

Proven winner......

Same thing for crying babies? How 'bout a nagging wife? Wonderful advice.

Shoot it with a laser beam?
Actualy, you have the pup chase the laser all over the yard until it's too tired to go on, and then settle in for a peaceful nights rest. Most pups are like small children...wear their butts out and they sleep a long time.
If that doesn't work, there's always the taser above that little light.;) :D

Stun guns and stun batons would work well too. It that still doens't work, sell it or kill it.

[*]use a no-bark collar (it is electronic, but will not harm the little guy)[/LIST]Good luck.

For a dog that gets it in its mind as a puppy that barking is the thing to do, the no-bark collar is the way to fix the problem with the least hassle. It will not harm the dog.

I'll never forget one of my neighbors from years back. He had a dog we'll just call "Spot" that would start barking from the moment he hit the back yard and could go on for hours. This dog would bark at the reflection of the TV screen off my bedroom window endlessly. The behavior started when he was a puppy and only became engrained and more frequent as he grew older. My neighbors had him neutered ... it didn't help. In fact, nothing worked until they put the no-bark collar on him.

The barking stopped the afternoon they put the collar on him. They later experimented with taking it off and the barking cranked up again :grumpy: . This pooch now wears the collar full time ... Great device ...

Neighbor kept a dog chained to a doghouse in the back yard. Every time my father went out to work in the garden the dog would bark -- the whole time. If he spent two hours in the garden the dog would bark two hours. You'd think she would lose her voice, but no....

Then Dad noticed when we did some target shooting in the back yard the dog shut up and hid in her doghouse. So he started bringing his .22 rifle out to the garden with him and every time the dog started barking he would fire a shot into the air and the dog would shut up and hide in her doghouse. After a while she would come out and bark again, but he would fire another shot into the air as needed. .22 ammunition is cheap.

Pretty soon the dog figured out what made that scary noise and as soon as she saw him with the gun she would shut up and hide in her doghouse before he could even shoot. So after that he just showed her the gun and she would shut up.

So, one day my father was brandishing his gun at the dog, holding it up and shaking it and saying, "You see this? You better stop that barking!" when he noticed his neighbor was standing there watching him.... He had to do some fast talking to explain.... :D

If the puppy is barking indoors I think blowing a whistle really loud could work as well as shooting a gun.

Thanks guys! This little 16 pound guy is a true pleasure and my closest companion so we are pretty much inseperable. He's just a healthy, happy fellow and barking stops every time...how? I hug him! I'm exhausted but he's happy.:) :D
