How tough are Randall knives?

When I get my beautiful fighter its not getting abused. It might live in a drawer to be admired sometimes.
The small dagger might even get carried, but if I wanted a knife simply to abuse id have kept some of my many busses.
Seriously drooling over this one. Love that guard.

Woow, this combination is absolutely stunning example of pure,full-blooded fighting/combat knife! Unbelievable, what a beauty! Thanks for posting

My take on "hard way" and "beat the hell" is using the knife for its intended purpose without regard for its collector value or aesthetic condition. But I do agree the tasks should be knife tasks. Larger survival knives need to be strong enough to construct a shelter, whereas a hunting knife should be able to handle normal camp chores, as well as the hazards that occur while performing these tasks. In my mere opinion knives are not toys meant to be bent in vise just after it smashed up a cinder block. Oddly, if a knife over performs at vise duties, that sort of performance might be indicative of a blade that is too resilient under load. To much resiliency might effectuate undo torsional flex when performing normal chopping duties decreasing the efficiency of that and similar tasks. Ironically 440 Radalls out perform cinder block tests, and not so ironically Busse outperform in the vise. I personally believe this is an important thread so every generation of knife enthusiast is exposed to the benefits and qualities of Randall Made Knives, and many younger knife enthusiasts are not familiar enough with RMK's not to ask certain types of questions.

I think it's beautiful too! It is certainly in my top 5 knives in terms of aesthetics. The border patrol handle is my favorite. I can't really justify buying a real Randall any more. The Blackjack 1-7 is pretty much a copy of that knife.

I have same taste, i like very much too, this large Smithsonian Bowie (supposedly replica of Jim Bowie's original knife, also in exposition of Smithsonian Museum)...

That's incorrect. Even Randall doesn't claim that.

The Iron Mistress knife has nothing to do with actual recorded history of Bowie era knives, let alone the Sandbar knife.

More Knife 101 to study.

Very true. The Sandbar fight knife was more of a heavy duty butcher knife. Or what today I call a camp knife.

Karda,I would like to thank you very much for your response-i appreciate your words!

I think, this is great forum and there are lot of people with great knowledge or experience when it comes to our mutual interest in knives.Non of us can say "I know it all",that's why we ask each other stuff we would like to know.

True. Many of us have chosen, when there are things we do not know, to ask questions about those things instead of repeatedly stating "facts" about them.

That approach seems, to many of us, to result in uncontentious threads.

Many of us approach this differently.
Would it not be better to politely state the facts in an non-confrontational manner instead of trolling the person asking?
It's the difference between intelligent and childish discussion.

That is amazing: I never had even an inkling such a movie existed...

The Model 18 is presented as a "traditional" Randall...

This has got to be one of the most focussed "knife movie" ever made by the looks of it... I wonder if there is another movie where actors even name knife makers, designers or brands during the movie...

And the movie poster is nothing but a huge Randall Model 14 presented in a high art symbolic manner...

They sure have serious-looking knife salesmen in Brazil...

Dang it, and there I was, just flying under the wire...

Hi Melvin-Purvis

Since you are the man to ask about Randalls-i have notice company offer full tang handles on some (not all) models. What I am interested however is - the construction of stick tangs handles on their knives. If that can be anyhow summarised, how do they build these tangs inside the handle? Is the tang leading all the way throughout the handle and fixed in the pommel? If yes,how is it fixed and what shape and thickness is usually this tang? Or they do rat (short tail tangs?)
If you would know, please share this, I know there are just so many models, this can vary from one to another, but I am very interested especially in models 12....

Thanks for any info on this!
