how well would this work out for camp use?

ray, i'm going camping for two weeks , so send it to me and i'll give it a try out for you.(grin)
vern
ps it a great looking chopper.

This looks like it could be a great camp knife. Chops wood or veggies (like a Chinese kitchen knife). I'm interested in one for my camp and kitchen.
Any chance of a convex grind to the blade?
Ira

i went out the other day and gave it a little test on some osage orange. if i were to test the edge out by seeing how many pieces i could chop in half before it became dull, i would want someone else with lots of energy doing the chopping. i have it shaving sharp for the next round. as you can see my aim isnt that good but if i could hit the right spots i would have cut this log in half by now.

Can you post a pic of the part that you used from the cultivator? I'm not picturing it. My FIL probably has one in his shop.

Yeah but I like how Richards has a ulu like component.

Richard, you should have someone do a cutout in the blade to be used as a handle.

If you positioned the cutout just right it wouldnt because it has that buldge that puts alot of weight on the handle.
Put the cut out there and you may be able to make it more blade heavy and a better chopper.

I like that thing. If it can chop through an Osage Orange log , it could lop off fish heads.

udtjim, thats a sweet looking chopper. gibby, its a flat disc thats 18" x 3/16". both of these numbers will be on the disc if its a good one SS0032 and N214190. you can google the second number and the 5th link down will have a picture. its called an opener blade. if i make another one i might plasma cut a slot for a handle. yesterday i chopped a little more on the log and its almost in half. i made a cleaver for kitchen or camp use. i might make an ulu from a piece of the disc although i have one i made from tool steel years ago that i dont use.

dipbait, fish heads would be gravy for this thing. it came in handy cleaning some tame rabbits earlier this week. i'm wondering how much wood brian can chop with this thing before it needs sharpened again. i have plenty of local people wanting to try it out badly for me.

before i hurt myself real bad with this thing......

yesterday i lost my grip and dropped it. there was a piece of wood that it bounced off of and the spine hit my leg. i had jeans and socks on. i finally cut the osage orange log in half before i done this.

finally its on the way to brian. i'm out of hair on my arm so i didnt really get a chance to see how well it shaves before shipping it off but for chopping wood i guess it wont matter.

Richard, got the chopper! This thing is a BRUTE baby! Beautiful work! And yes, it scares the hair off my arm with the convex edge. I took down some large maple branches at the house I live in now, and then used the chopper this a.m. to break some of them up. It is scary how this thing eats through hardwood.

Really, really well done, buddy! Thank you again for sending it!
