If you were handed up to $800 today and told that you can spend it on a firearm and accessories/ammo only, how would you spend it? No money above and beyond the $800 allowed!

wife agreed to a preset limit?

own any guns right now? if not, in Fargo ND, the first firearm MUST be a 12 gauge. figure 500 for a good pump gun, 25 for a full choke, 75 for a rifled slug barrel, 100 for a good hardside case, the rest on a cleaning kit and ammo.

I think xdshooter's advice is sound. The answer to your question is very much dependent on what you already have. For my part, I'd buy a Savage sniper rifle in .308 Win. and spend the balance on reloading components.

What is the purpose/mission/intended use of the firearm? Answering this one question narrows down the choices considerably.

Depends on what you already have and what you want to do with your new purchase. Hunting, plinking, defence, clay games, 3-gun, EDC, etc...

If a person had no firearms and wanted to spend $800 I'd suggest the following:

Ruger Mark II .22 - $230
Remington 870 Express 12 ga - $250
Marlin Model 60 .22 rifle - $130

Spend the rest on a scope for the .22 rifle, ammo and accesories.

If you have a few $$ left, you can pick up a Mosin Nagant 39 or 44 for well under $100

Of course you could spend the whole $800 on a Kimber Custom II and live happily ever after.

I'd buy an AK 47 pistol while you still can.
Any Black rifle will do.
Hillary and company will ban them all.

I'd probably buy a case or two of 7.62 x 39 and spend the rest on reloading components.

If I had to pick another gun under $800, I'd probably get another AK. A Marlin lever action in .357 Mag would be tempting also.

What would YOU buy????

I'm not looking for advise!

SAM: It's a SURVIVAL forum, i.e. lots of posts about things OTHER than knives!

Probably 2 more M14s! I always have an M14 project on the go!

Or possibly a couple more 1911s...the gf has been bugging me for a pair in 9mm. That would use up most of the $800, probably enough left over to buy some good dies for the Dillon, and everything else I have...so there you go! 2 M14s or 2 1911s!

Ruger Alaskan in .454. I have two Super Redhawks with 7.5" barrels, but they are just to clumsy to get into action quickly in a bear attack. The Alaskan is the gun I have been waiting for....I already have evey other gun I could ever want.

Where can you find an M14 for $400? I'd love to buy one for that price!

Tough call, there's too many guns I want right now. I've already got several important bases covered, but here are some 'sets' I'd like.

Marlin 1894C .357 mag + GP-100

Marlin + Glock 19

Savage Scout + Browning Hi-Power

A lot of those would have to be bought used, but I'm quite OK with that.

Unfortunately you can't! But in Canada they are readily available. They cannot be exported to the US because of a ban on certain Chinese goods. Up here the base price is $399. But to be totally honest the only guy who has a large quantity in stock right now is charging more like $450. The big containers we're all waiting for haven't arrived yet to the cheap guys.

So the premise is you are totally gun-less and have 800$ to spend on a general purpose jack-of-all-trades gun(s)?
Or Is this supposed to just be a hunting gun? What you need the gun for determines your choice of gun.
If its just a 800$ gun shopping spree then the answer would be determined by what you already have and what you really need/want.
If i was suddenly given an 800$ coupon for firearms from a hunting/sporting goods store then i would get a shotgun and a 22 LR plus ammo/ case/sling/cleaning kit.
1st choice would probably be a Mossberg 500 12 gauge riot gun blued or in stain resistant finish.A Remington 870 Marine Magnum would be nice alternative but around here the price is high and would eat up most of the 800$. An 870 express would be my less expensive Remington choice
2nd choice would be a Ruger 10/22 stainless with synthetic stock and spare mags. An alternate 22 choice would be a 22 pump, a Rossi or a Henry.

If you are talking handguns then a used Browning High power in 9mm and a 22 conversion kit (plus grips/ammo/case etc) would be my choice. Or maybe a new good quality High power clone with a drop in match barrel and the 22 conversion kit.
