How would you spend $800 slated for a firearm?

Unfortunately you can't! But in Canada they are readily available. They cannot be exported to the US because of a ban on certain Chinese goods. Up here the base price is $399. But to be totally honest the only guy who has a large quantity in stock right now is charging more like $450. The big containers we're all waiting for haven't arrived yet to the cheap guys.

How's the metallurgy on the Norincos? I recall reading back when the Chinese M-14 clones were available here in the US that the bolt's often had poor heat treatment and metallurgy and sometimes resultingly failed. I remember looking at a Polytech once, and the fit and finish left some to be desired.

You need a good .22. You can get a Savage Semi-Auto for less than $100 new at Wal-Mart, if they still sell them. A Marlin 60 or a 10/22 will cost you between $150 and $175. A CZ Bolt is only $225ish. The bolt action is great for cheap plinking, and small game hunting. It is a critical part of any survival arsenal. Ammo is 550 rds for $10 or $11- you can't beat that.

Get an AR-15 style stripped lower reciever while you still can. If your over 21, have the dealer transfer it to you as a PISTOL (make sure the Form 4473 is marked pistol on the weapon type indicator). This will give you he ability to legally configure it as a pistol or as a rifle (remember, you may only use a sub 16" barrel without a stock unless you register it as an SBR). This will cost you about $100. Don't build it yet, but have it ready for when you have more cash. At least you'll have your "firearm" before the ban.

Get a Finnish M-39 Mosin Nagant. This will cost you about $225 to $250- mine only cost $183, mainly because I got lucky on a Gunbroker auction. 7.62x54mmR ammo is pretty affordable- you can get military surplus ammo for about 15 to 20 cents per round, and there is plenty of hunting ammo available- with soft point bullets up to 204 grains. These Finnish rifles are much more accurate and better constructed than the Russian refurbs that are on the market- the tolerances are also much better and they function better as a result. The nice thing about Finnish surplus weapons is that they aren't going down in value- in fact, it will probably increase in value.

Get a used (but not abused) Remington 870 Express. This will run you about $200. If you have a bird barrel on the gun, invest in a used riot barrel (or vice versa). Everyone needs a shotgun- good for home defense, bird hunting, upland game hunting, and general utility. If you could only have one gun, I have to admit I would probably say get a shotgun.

Then, buy a .22 LR single action revolver. The Heritage Rough Rider is pretty affordable and has a neat safety on it. Cheap to shoot. Make sure you splurge and buy the model with the adjustable sights- you'll be glad. This will get you into pistol marksmanship, and is also good for small game hunting once you develop you pistol marksmanship skills. The Heritage revolvers should be less than $150.

After we spent this $800 of yours...

When you can afford it, get a Carry Concealed Permit- you're in a shall issue state, so it's easy enough. This will allow you to carry a handgun concealed for eprsonal protection. Then, buy a compact, defensive firearm.

Then build up your AR as you so desire. I think you should buy as many mags as possible upo front- you never know when the next ban may get implemented. Buy the hi-caps while you can. I prefer C-Products mags, and they are $12.35 per for brand new 30 rounders (get the Magpul follwer version). USA Made in New Britain, CT- the Hardware Capital of the world!

Then, learn that buying guns is addicting, and $800 is a small amount- you'll start accumulating lots of small metal things, and other metal things that come out of them.

Get a blackpowder rifle. Their fun, can be shipped right to yuor door W/O a background check, and are practical hunting implements.

Accumulate a very diverse gun horde- and imagine what the headlines would say if the "black helicopters" ever showed up:rolleyes:

I'd definetly go with a Springfield XD pistol in .45 ACP in flat dark earth with a 5 inch bbl. That would cost about $500 plus $25 tax. With the rest of the money, I'd buy a used 870 express in 12 gauge, which would cost about $250 plus $15 tax. I'd put the other $10 toward an 18 inch riot bbl. for the 870.

The metallurgy is probably the highlight of the norks. The steel is really, really good. They are extremely hard, and extremely tough. Gunsmiths complain about them now because they are tough to machine!

The fit is great but the finish is nothing to write home about. I would say, picture a LRB if the machinist was hung over. Everything is in the right spot - in fact the receivers are practically dead on spec so optics mounts match up well - but the guy wasn't going to screw around making it pretty. Then, he put it in a really lousy stock. That's about the size of them. You cannot really even consider keeping the chu wood stock, because it is really soft, but if you drop it in a USGI synthetic I would say you have something that looks a little worse but typically performs a lot better than a SA.

They sure do shoot, and I have not managed to jam one yet. That sums up my PERSONAL requirements for a fighting rifle but I can appreciate some guys wanting better cosmetics. As a matter of fact I have one receiver being cleaned up to presentation grade right now, so I guess I can't claim to be all go and no show either.

I would search for a used M6 Scout 22/410 rifle.

Man I sure wish Springfield Armory still made this model, because I really want one. :grumpy:

S&W 686 (.357 mag) and reloading dies. Probably use the remainder for some factory ammo for fun and casings.

i would buy a harrington and richardson 12 gauge singleshot at walmart for a $ 100 dollars or less . While you are ther buy a marlin model 60 22lr rifle , they are under $100 also. heck, you can buy a buck 110 for less than $30 there also. so that's $230 - you have $570 left . you can buy a nice 44 caliber ruger super blackhawk for around $400 , so let's get that. the final $170 can buy a cheap machete $6, backpack $54 , a grber fixblade from walmart $20, and i guess i will let you spend the other $ 90.

Simple, I'd shoot the whole wad on a new Weatherby 22 rifle (Mark XXII).

Added: It's on my buy at first opportunity list from a local gun shop. Not going to buy one on line.

I would throw the money in the bank and wait till the Magpul Masada comes out and buy that sucker, with an additional $600 of course

Depends on what you already have and what you want to do with your new purchase. Hunting, plinking, defence, clay games, 3-gun, EDC, etc...

If a person had no firearms and wanted to spend $800 I'd suggest the following:

Ruger Mark II .22 - $230
Remington 870 Express 12 ga - $250
Marlin Model 60 .22 rifle - $130

Spend the rest on a scope for the .22 rifle, ammo and accesories.

If you have a few $$ left, you can pick up a Mosin Nagant 39 or 44 for well under $100

Of course you could spend the whole $800 on a Kimber Custom II and live happily ever after.
Chris

Yes, this is exactly what you should do. Unless you already own these good starter firearms.

A Glock and $300 worth of ammo!
Tho a Marlin .45-70 lever action Guide Gun looks tempting...

Guide Gun, got one.

454 Alaskan, got one.

M6, got one.

XD, both 40 & 45, got those.

AK? I have three.

I'd probably buy a bunch of ammo. I can't really think of a gun I need any more.

Don't be silly, there's lots of guns you still need. You need a MBR type rifle. An M1A, Ar-10, one of the saigas in .308 if you love the AK's so much. Really should get an AR of some sort.

I'd probably buy a bunch of ammo. I can't really think of a gun I need any more.

Ammo only, eh? $800 ought to buy you about 7 boxes of ammo right now. A veritable cache!

Re: the .308 Saiga- I've got one in 16", they are friggin' fun. Definitely one of my most accurate rifles. If I wasn't a poor man I'd have sent it to Tromix for a conversion and some 20 round magazines.

do to this insane ban law coming soon , I would love to own a Calico 9mm w/ 3ea. 100rnd mags.it will take all $800 to purchase a dressed out Calico 9. Awesome firearm USA made !

I'm in Canada, a buddy of mine had (past tense) a calico 22. Great gun unfortunately Big Brother decided it was "too evil".
Despite the fact that it was legally purchased and was legal at the time of purchase it was later confiscated by the RCMP.
Molten lead was poured down the barrel and the receiver was cut in half with a blow torch.

is there no Grandfather clause in Canada ? That makes me sick, knowing they can just take something away like that is un-just. I fear that will be the case here someday, boy THEY will have a field day with me ,and I will be sick losing the firearms all legal at this time & legally purchased and a few legislative acts bingo bango your firearm is gone for no good reason except to control the masses !
