If you are in the process of building a pid controlled forge or want to update your controller, you can't do any better than these SD series Watlow controllers.

I run one of my forges with an SD Watlow and since my welding forge just crapped its cheapo pid I looked on line to replace it and found these. They are 250.00 + from the factory.

I bought two of them.

Fred

Move this if inappropriate.

I agree with Fred that the Watlow controllers are super for our requirements.
I don't normally approve of auction spotting, but it is OK to share a supply source, so Fred's link and those below should be considered a supplier source, not a specific auction.

I will share a great source with you guys....and probably screw up my secret supply source of cheap 3Ph motors, equipment, and supplies...including files.

On ebay there is a company called hgrauctions. They resell industrial supplies and equipment..all starting at $3.99. They have stuff that sells new for $1000's, and goes for $21.00 .Much of the stuff they have is NIB.
These links will give you an idea of the deals I get from them:

Thanks for sharing these links Stacy.

I figure as knife makers, we are all about sharing. Whether its some technique someone has discovered and wants to pass along to others, or a source or supplier where knife makers can purchase materials and other items that will expedite their journey; its all good.:)

Regards, Fred

You are certainly right about that supplier. They are here in Cleveland, OH and I thought of them when I started building my GIB. I saw they had some Baldor 3ph 2HP motors in stock, so I paid them a visit. I ended up bringing the 2 they had home with me for a steal. (one for a spare)

I should post a picture of the inside of that place!

Thanks Fred and Stacy!!!

I've always been a bit perplexed by the auction rule. I think it totally makes sense that people shouldn't come on here and point out that their "friend" has something for sale on ebay or CL.... but I freak'n LOVE posts like Fred's because saving money or getting hard to find items can be a full time job. Getting a nudge from a friend about a good deal is always welcome in my book :)

Holy crap dperk!!! ..... that would be a neat place to walk around in for hours!!! :D

Thanks guys!!! :)

Should I go pick it up for you :)
...15min drive for me.

Oh, and you never pay full price there!

Man that's cool. I have no way to use it, but... dang... that's cool. I wonder what it was originally designed for?

Respectfully, Stacey, why would you think that would be a surface grinder? Wouldn't it have to have specs for something that needs to be that precise?

It looks like a wet (bath) grinding stone to me.

It's only marked off from $139 to $99.

Sounds fishy to me.

I've looked for a stone like that, and they were priced vastly more expensive.

I believe this type of wheel is also used on a double disc grinder. There are two wheels that are almost parallel to each other and shims are ground between them. The reuslt are surfaces that are flat and parallel since material is removed from both sides at the same time.

Sounds fishy to me.

Actually, this is industrial surplus, probably from the same company that Mike Morehouse is talking about. The retail on a stone like this is probably a good $5,000 per wheel.

And Stacy, if you're really serious about grinding wheels, snoop around on Ebay, because there are a whole lot more surplus industrial wheels around, probably several that might be a tad bit more practical. And you can have them shipped via UPS for cheap.

Back when I was still living in the US, I bought two Norton 16x5x5 industrial wet/dry surface grinding wheels off of Ebay, and the price for each, delivered to my door was somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 apiece.

The wheels that I bought were "hogging" surface grinding wheels, so you can grind on the flat sides, as well as on the rounded face. They were made for grinding turbines and other aerospace applications. Before I bought them, I did a little research, and IIRC, the retail price was somewhere around $2,000 per wheel.

I still haven't built a machine to run them, but when I find a little time, my plan is to "pulley" down a 1-2 horse motor to a reasonable wheel-surface-speed and set up some sort of watering system for them. I still haven't decided whether to run the wheels vertically or horizontally (remember, I can grind on either the round or the flat surfaces of these wheels).

Vertically, I can just set up a tray underneath. Horizontally, I would need to set up a pump/nozzle/reservoir system to trickle water onto the flat surface.

But I am hoping that if I can come up with a useful setup, I might just save myself a few grand on belts. I figure 60 lbs. of stone = a heck of a lot of sandpaper.

I used to change out wheels like that on an O.D. Grinder used to grind die pins. Same Norton wheel with a 12" ID. It took two of us to get it on the machine. They ran wet and would have been perfect for knives, if you could rig up a machine to turn them. Here is one of the machines that looks similar to ours.

Thanks for dropping in Maygen.

I am a big promoter of HGR. The deals available to machinists and those needing obscure items are enormous.
I have paid $3.99 for new-in-the-box items that would have cost hundreds from the manufacturer.

Those 36" wheels wouldn't be still around ,would they?
