Hungarian Folder

Just picked the Hungarian folder up from the Post Office.
Very nice. Fit and finish are top notch as expected from Taichung.
Great ergos and there will be no complaints about too much handle to blade ratio on this one, very aesthetically pleasing.
Handle finish is glossy smooth and has a well finished look with the color matched hardware and cut out for the clip so it fits almost flush with the scale.
The clip looks to be a little thicker than most so no worries about bending. And I'm not a fan of all the holes drilled in scales for multi-positioning of the clip so this one is a winner for me. Only drilled for tip up right hand although with its curve it will fit well in the left pocket and will take up less space. Also opens well using my left hand.
The only little con is the Gayle Bradley-like liner lock release mentioned above. No big deal though but I'm sure we'll see one soon enough with a home Dremel treatment.

Awesome, thanks for the pictures. I was wondering about the clip. It looked odd, but I guess they had to go with a more custom clip due to the curved nature of the handle. Looks to use the regular 3-hole pattern though. That would be a tricky clip swap job with the curvature and the contouring of the handle. The handle to blade ratio looks pretty maxed out which in a larger blade, I think it should be. The blade shape is reminiscent of the Military's, like a fancy version of a Military. Not jumping on this one right now, but may grab it later.

Definitely tricky. The scale has been milled out to accept the shape of the clip. And the 3-hole pattern isn't perfectly triangular.

Nice pictures Barman1. Nice looking folder with that curved polished G10 handles like the Vollatton and SS bolsters. Looks to be another high quality folder from the Taichung plant.

I GOTTA get one!! WOW!! Thanks for the run-down/pics!! John

Barman, think that you could take a couple of comparison shots with a couple of common Spydies for size reference?

I'm REALLY interested in this one.

Certainly. Need to get off the couch anyway. ;)

Here's the sizing from the Delica to my lefty Millie.
The Hungarian folder isn't as big as I'd imagined. Almost an ideal size, for me anyway, as the custom scaled Chokwe that I carry a lot shows it's fairly close in size.

Yeah baby... that thing is super cool looking. I love everything about it. The only thing I'm not a fan of is my inability to buy one.

Exactly my thoughts. Although, I am quite accustomed to that with quite a few Spyderco's in that category.

Nice size. It's bigger than I had thought. Oh dear, there goes another couple hundred.........

Those are great comparison pics, thanks Barman ... I feel myself slipping over the edge ....

A bit rude on a Spyderco page so I apologize but any chance of a comparison pic with a Benchmade Torrent?

It's almost identical in size to the Chokwe, good comparison shot. Another model that I'm on the fence about. I think it it were bolsterless, I'd have one already. I like the look of the bolster aesthetically, though.

I'm a fan of the Chokwe and to be honest I'd have a tough time right now choosing one over the other. The Hungarian carries a little better in the pocket though.
The bolsters are only aesthetic. No other function than to look good. :)

I really like the swells in the handle, that you hinted at with earlier pics.

In all I like the combination of artistry and usefulness of this model. In particular I like the steel liners and lock, the highly exposed blade (no question about whether you're accessing the hole from either side on this one), the curvature, and the overall blade shape and angle.

It looks like something Keyser Söze would carry.

I found a recipe for Hungarian Goulash that I'll put together for a photo op with the knife. As soon as I'm well enough to eat it. :(

But yes this is a very well built piece. Really looking at it this morning I realized that it has many features found on some of my customs i have owned and in some cases exceeds the quality of half of my custom folders.
Ti liners would have put it over the top of one of my best customs but that would also put the price point over what most would want to shell out as it would require carbidizing or an insert on the lock face and all of the extras that Ti requires.

I'm glad I got one of these Spyderco Hungarian folders. It feels really good in the hand, extremely well-built and a stunning piece. Smaller than I thought in a good way and a fairly narrow profile. Another home run from Spyderco's Taichung plant. My favorite Spyderco folder now after the Southard. Kicked Bradley to third place!
