Hunt/Camp/Food Prep/Bushcraft Knife - Bushfinger, Recluse, or Hunter?

The edge on the butt of the handle is very sharp no matter where my hand touches it on the Bushfinger.
Are the Recluse or Hunter models similar or are thy more rounded?

The Hunter & Recluse are going to be somewhat similar. If you want a more rounded pommel you might want to look at these models, listed from the largest to smallest

Bushcrafter Sr.
Bushcrafter
K.E. Bushie , which is also guardless and does well at a cutting board
Arete
Bushcrafter Jr.
Hiking Buddy

Cootshooter,

Thurin's advice is is always very sound. The knife that I would recommend to you given your hand size is the Camp Nessie. Thurin has large hands like yours and the Camp Nessie is his favorite knife for the tasks you mentioned. Trestle has one for sale in the Flea Market right now at a bargain price. There are also a couple available at The-Knife-Connection.

Here is another thread about the various models that you may find useful.

Good luck with your search for the perfect Fiddleback for you.

Phil

Thanks Phil!

I'll expound some on what Phil has said as to why the Camp Nessie is my favorite even though it has a square butt.

The Camp Nessie, as well as some other knives in this size like the Bear Paw, have handles that are long enough that the butt doesn't come into play. Combine that with a thicker handle and some grippy Shadetree, and it's a perfect combo.

My hands are similar to yours but a little bigger. We have never had a Bushcraft Sr. roll through the shop that did not fit my hand well. Wish we had one for you but I am sure you can find one. I think this will be the right fit for you. Good luck!

I never take pics inside because I have horrible lighting haha. I made an exception to maybe help show the difference between the Bushfinger and Bushcrafter in hand. I too have what I think most would call "meaty" hands. Personally I find both knives very comfortable and would use either for the tasks you mentioned. Of the 2 Bushfingers i have, one is noticeably thinner than the other and it does change the feel quite a bit. I wouldn't say give up on the Bushfinger, a thicker handled version would probably suit you better. If you do prefer a more rounded pommel, the bushcrafter has been said by some to be better at game processing (I would agree) and not quite as good for food prep. Of course it excels at woods craft tasks.

I hope the pics help and I most definitely apologize for the horrible image quality from my phone.

Thanks necro. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Bottom pic looks like it wouldn't create that bite in the palm like I'm getting.

We have a Bushcrafter Sr. going up in the sales thread today. If you like the overall length of the Bushfinger then you might look into trying a regular Bushcrafter first. The handles are the same on the regular/Sr., it is just the blade length of the Sr. that is an inch longer.

Thanks,
Ken

As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short... I'll keep my eyes peeled. I'm thinking that Sr. is going to be the ticket.

I have the exact same issue as you. And I agree with Phil's advice. ( comprehensivist) Couple weeks ago I got a camp Nessie and for the first time have a Fiddleback that is comfortable with a full four-finger grip for me. The handle is 5 1/3" long. To find it I had to watch for Camp Nessies to be listed at a dealer, telephone them, and ask them to actually measure the handle. Some handles were shorter though all were over 5 inches in length. I think there is a camp Nessie listed by Trestle on the Fiddleback flea market now, and you might want to send him a PM and ask him to measure the handle for you. He has done that for me.
