Turkey Gods came through yesterday. Started out in a fog bank till 8-8:30 am. Heard a muffled gobble bout 6:30 low in the hollow. I contemplated leaving a couple of times cuz of the fog, but stuck it out. As soon as the fog began clearing, some birds started talking. Problem was they were on the wrong side of the mountain.[emoji17] I played around with them for awhile. Hoping a bird might get fired up on my side or come across the hollow.
Fast forward....I was working my way back to the truck the same route I took earlier. Turkeys love to show up where you were calling, but after you leave.[emoji6] About 11am I was near where I had heard the muffled gobble at 6:30. I made a few loud clucks/yelps and two birds gobbled instantly bout 100yds below me. I worked in a little closer and set up on the edge of a bench. I saw some heads moving around below me. I thought they had seen me, but they were chasing each other around. A few calls/minutes later a young 8" gobbler came up over the bench bout 35yds to my left. There was a lot of small saplings in the way so no shot. He was clucking a lot looking for the source of the yelps n clucks. Right behind him a nicer gobbler came up in full strut. I was getting nervous cuz I still didn't have a shot! The younger gobbler worked his way above me, while the bigger guy strutted on a log back n forth. I gave a couple soft yelps n he stretched his head out looking for the hen. He hopped down and ever so slowly walked my way. As soon as he cleared those sapplings, boom!! it was over. Bout 30 yd shot...9.5" beard...1" spurs. Nice rewarding hunt.[emoji1]
