Hunting and Trapping

This guy was trotting with a couple does thru the pines I was sitting in..

Congrats on the nice 8-pointer!

I wish I had a good story to tell, but I did have success this morning. After passing on a bunch of deer, I decided to take the first thing I saw this morning. Turned out to be a little button buck. Not very big, but some tender, delicous meat. And I got to use the Crooked Creek for what it was designed.:D

Going to try for another in a couple weeks during the antlerless only seasons.

Wish we had a huntable bear population in Illinois, maybe for my Grandkids.

I read a while back on the dnr website that they are trying to establish a population of bear, wolves, and cougars in Illinois. Not sure if there is really anywhere other than southern IL that could support something like that. It will be interesting to see how the populations grow in a few years.

Congrats on the deer cooper, I've heard you can't eat the tag...;)

.

I've had more pictures of raccoons on my trail camera this year than deer. I picked up some dog-proof traps last weekend and finally got a chance to set a few yesterday. My first trapping season has started. Caught one last night. Had to check the traps and skin it during my lunch break, so I didn't think to take any pictures "during".

Which DP trap are you using?

One PA mountain whitetail...cut, quartered, n packed to go! The personal camp knife worked great. Thought the clipped point work well on puncturing hide, while the belly was effective on skinning. Both aspects worked great on deboning the meat. Two thumbs up[emoji2] Great knife!

Congrats to everyone who got a deer, there's some nice ones posted. My deer season consisted of about 4 hrs in a deer stand and that's it, maybe next season I'll get more time in the woods.

YoungCurmudgeon good job working on those coons. I've had good luck using Duke and Z-traps DP traps, but prefer the Z-traps due to the push\pull triggers and powder coating.
I did manage to get out Monday and put 12 snares in a fence row between a cattle pasture and a CRP field. To my surprise Tuesdays check produced two coyotes.

Congratulations on the coyotes.
I haven't tried to trap any coyotes, though the farm here is thick with them. Our neighbor, my wife's aunt and uncle, let there dogs run free (aggravating but they been doing it since before we moved out here, so what can I do). Anyway, I would like to trap some coyotes, but any trap I set targeting them would likely end up with a dog in it which would lead to an uncomfortable conversation and awkward family get togethers. I do like calling coyotes though, but haven't been out yet this year.

Anyone getting excited about spring gobbler season? I covered several miles yesterday and only a short hike this morning listening for birds. The highlight yesterday was jumping three grouse in a single trip. I can't remember the last day I jumped more than two. The sign seems to indicate the coyote population has increased in one of my normally productive spots. I didn't hear the first bird there yesterday. Season is still a few weeks away, maybe they will be.

I've noticed an upswing in the coyote population here, on the streets and in the fields. Also, all day yesterday huge flocks of geese were flying through, and last night I could hear them in the fields at the end of our street.

Hey deer hunters, I have a question.

Do you chop or saw through the pelvic bone or not.
I was taught to so do, but have heard it isn't necessary.
It's been 32 years since I last dressed a deer and can't remember the reason for it except quicker cooling of the carcass.
What do you all think?
