Hunting pigs with Kids

I used a 45/70 guide gun with sights and a trigger from WWG in November when i went hog hunting in the brush in Texas.

That thing flat anchors them. I was just using factory 405 grain fodder and you won't need anything more than that for pigs. They really aren't that hard to kill.

I took one at about 10 feet it was running right towards me saw me and turned. It went from a dead run to on its side faster than anything I have ever seen with one shot.

A friend of mine used a 30/30 and it did a pretty fair job as well.

Just remember a shorter barrell is a bit quicker.

When I read the thread title, the first thing that went through my head was, "I didn't know pigs were attracted to kids." LOL!

Hey Halrombers - Yes I have an AR and SKS. I bought them out of protest when they tried to ban them.

Vege- Taco - No, the kids will not be used as bait. That's the point of the thread. :)

Wild boar really aren't as dangerous as most people assume. I have been present at the killing of 100s of wild pigs and killed 35+ myself. The only time I have been charged is when the dogs had the thing bayed up against rocks and I was standing in the easiest escape route. The thing came at me mouth wide open and a dog grabbed it by the ear to switch its focus. Thank you Koko!

I would say just bring a 30-06 (etc) like everyone else, pack a 44mag handgun for bloodtracking if you're paranoid. I'm more confident with my rifle than a handgun however.

my pick would be a WWI vintage Lee Enfield .303.

Wild boar really aren't as dangerous as most people assume.

that is a very dangerous statement IMHO.

wild pigs need to be treated with respect. if they get a hold of you, they can do you a right mischief. the other point about pigs is they have this amazing ability to flood their system with copious amounts of adrenaline, meaning even a mortally wounded boar can still do you a lot of damage.

or maybe it's just the pigs where you are aren't that dangerous. i live in Australia and I have seen pigs do some serious damage to both dogs and hunters.

mind you, i use a compound bow for pig hunting. life is a lot easier/safer with a bang-stick.

How come nobody has suggested buckshot yet? we used to carry a side by side coach gun with a slug in left barrel and 00 buck in the right when we were in bear country. Never saw any bears though.

Maybe your Australian porkers are different than our Hawaiian ones. But not from what I've seen. Ive seen dogs ripped up, killed. People poked. This stuff only happens when the animal is cornered and forced to fight.

The OP said he's hunting in California, I have done a bit of hunting over there. Chances are the shot will be from 75-100 yards away through relatively open terrain. In these sort of cases the chance of a charge is very slim. Hunting thick cover and shooting one from 20' may be different.

When we hunt feral cattle in the native forest I pack a Mossberg 550 12ga loaded with 3.5" magnum slugs. I have hunted them before with the 30-30 and was almost killed due to a few sloppy mistakes.

Another vote for a shotgun (with slugs)

I wish you the best of luck on your hunt! Perhaps more important, stay safe!

if it were my kids, i would want that boar to be hit with a truck if it charged or got to close, i know of the 45-70, but i would go with a double barrel 12 gauge myself, it would be hard to get a follow up shot as fast as a double barrel. i shot a bear that got too close with a brennake, they are awesome.

i have shot pigs with both the 12 guage with 2 3/4 winchester supreme slugs, did a awesome job, rolled a 190 pound sow right over no problem. and many more lol about 8.

then i got a 6.8 ar and man the 110 noslers or 85 tsx's smash hogs. great gun and put a simple red dot on it and there isn't much faster. i have shot about 10 pigs with my 6.8 and they go down quick. its very deadly but i am never satisfied so i also went out and bought a 458 socom bolt action (well had it custom build i should say)

its rocks 3 rounds and is about 7 lbs loaded with a red dot on it and about 8-8.5 with a 3-9 power scope. i swear to you this is by far the most devastating gun i have ever shot a pig with. its just plain amazing to say the least. i mean it will make a hog do a flip lol. awesome round.

imo just use it as a excuse to buy a new gun especially in california before the ban something else and go out and hunt. anything mentioned will drop hogs no problem. and congrats on getting to go out and hunt with your boys, i am sure not much will top that in memories.

and whats the old saying hunt with your kids and you'll never have to hunt for your kids

i've seen pigs charge down archers with three arrows sticking through their heart and lungs.

mind you, i've also managed to drop a pig with a single shot from a .22lr (note: i do not recommend the use of a .22lr as a pig-hunting calibre).

The Lee enfield jungle carbine is a great suggestion, the .303 British packs a good wallop and the Lee Endfield can be cycled amazingly quickly.

Any Marlin or Browning BLR in 444marlin or 450 marlin should pack more than enough wallop and are quick handling. The BLR is also has a 3 round (iirc) detachable box magazine.

Grunt Soldier said,

That is the truth. I do not think I have been so excited about something in a while.

Here is a good saying also "where you spend your time is where your heart is"

Spend time with your family!

BTW, my daughter is 10, she will be getting get hunting license when she is 12. :)

Have you thought about starting them out on something a little less, should we say, dangerous? I pig hunt, with my brother and cousins and we are ready to backup each other at any time, but I do not think pig hunting is the thing for a beginner unless it is from a tree stand.

Hey Jim,

Yes I will start them off with some different type of hunting exercises, but this is coming up down the road and I just wanted to get some opinions on this subject so I can save and prepare.

Thanks for the concern, :)

Geoff

I bought a handgun from WildWestGuns and they are good guys. BTW, it is a Ruger Alaskan .454 Casull that they machined to accept .45ACP with moonclips, and they did a nice action job also. Anyway, you might want to consider one of these babies holstered in a chest rig for a little insurance policy. If nothing else, a good excuse, I mean reason, to get a cool gun.

The Lee enfield jungle carbine is a great suggestion, the .303 British packs a good wallop...

i actually don't like the jungle carbine version (Rifle Number 5 Mark 1) all that much. it's nowhere near as accurate as a Rifle Number 4 Mark 2.

they do however, pack one hell of a wallop. they're useless on smaller game. i once blasted a rabbit with a .303. there wasn't a whole lot left of it.

as one digger once told me "The .303 is a proven calibre. We've shot Boers, Japs, Krauts, Italians, Koreans and Chinese with it."

FYI: they are still in service in the Australian military to this day as sniper rifles.

i gotta sort out my damn gun license again. i want a .303. it's the only rifle i've ever really desired.

and the Lee Enfield can be cycled amazingly quickly.

i've heard claims that a shot-a-second is possible. WWI diggers would, apparantly, cycle the bolt with just their thumb.

my pig rifle has been posted here before... a hartford (rossi) md92 16" lever in .45colt... i run hot 300gr handloads through it at about 1200fps... the blackhawk is the back up running the same load at about 900-950 fps... i feel very comfortable with these tools and you cant beat a short lever in close brush.. my normal shots are ground hunting at less them 40 yards...
