Hunting stories

My new buck knives got a workout this weekend. I stuck a doe Friday night and then finished the weekend with this guy last night, that dropped in sight. The Ergohunter Pro as well as my new nickel silver 110 got the bulk of the work done. A great weekend.

David,
Thank you very much. The 112 saw duty, but I was eager to try other "tools". I must say, they all performed quite well and the Ergohunter was popular with my other lease members.

The doe from Friday night was my first animal with the Hoyt Maxxis 31. This buck the second. A successful weekend with butchering tasks lined up for this week before a return trip this weekend for more!

When I published this story the first time, nobody believed it.
But I swear: it is

A true story

It is half past nine
In the morning time
It’s funny to hunt
Nothing else I want
For the supper tonight a big steak will be mine

It is ten o’ clock
Dream from hunting rock
And my deeply loved misses
I dismiss with some kisses
She goes shopping so long till the shopping mall lock.

Whistling a skiffle
I put out the rifle
And with needful grave
I opened the save
To find the right knife - put my hand on the stifle

It is half past ten
It’s not easy then
Do I take the skinner?
But the dagger is thinner
And the Buck Koji Folder is nothing for men

It’s ten past eleven
I pray up in the heaven
The knife must be crispy
Found a bottle of Whisky
With malt in brain reduce selection to seven

Its up to noon
I’ve to hurry soon
Is the folder the best
Take the fixed for the rest
The frontiersman is great like the knives tycoon

The bell chimes one
The first bottle is gone
Do I take the old tool
Kids are coming from school
I stay quite steady that they think here is none

I stood half an hour
Thinking hunting goes sour
No reason to shatter
The luck shifts to better
The kids go out using dads muscle car power

Five minutes to three
Came a meddlesome bee
Stings in my thumb
Stopped the pain with white rum
This large brown thing outside is that a tree?

Some minutes past four
It nocks at the door
Try to say no one is here
Dreaming hunting a deer
But the noise was so strange that I was looking for

Large nighthawk in hand
To the door I went
But I had no sight
Rum takes it out of my might
So I couldn’t see who took outside his stand

Not a moment later
I thought I hate her
Women is home
Back from shopping dome
Its too early that I await her

I opened the door
Listened steps on the floor
Without any harm
She took me in her arm
But the knife in my hand makes an unpleasant sore

She fell on my tummy
I shout for my mummy
But the nighthawk slips
Between her ribs
I could not say that it was funny

I woke up at night
My wife stood beside
Was it a dream ?
But there was a team
To strip the brown bear that I knifed that it died

That's a true story - gentlemen - you can believe it!

Take care,
Haebbie

Well carrying 3 Buck knives must have worked. Didn't get a shot at a small one in the morning, but I got a 4 point in the evening. He is heavy too. In 28 years of hunting this is only my second buck. The Vanguard did a great job.

My son and I were hunting (self-guided) on a ranch on a large mesa in NE New Mexico. During scouting the 3 days before opening day, saw some large bucks on other ranches, where we couldnt hunt, and does and small bucks where we could hunt. We figured we would hunt hard for two days and not see anything shootable (we were looking for nicely shaped horns, this is not an area for 15" bucks). On the morning of the hunt, saw two bucks, too far away to judge, at the base of a large hill in the distance. Decided to take a stab at it, and drove around to the back of the hill, and started out over the hill. After about 30 minutes just before the last rise before topping out, i had my son chamber a round and put it on safe. We snuck slowly over the top heading toward where the two bucks were at last sighting. I looked to my right (with antelope, i have learned that they will pop up anywhere), and there was a shooter buck who was curious about what we were up to. My son set up and put him down. Before i started field dressing I suggested my son watch to all sides while i did the needful. First the two bucks we had been stalking ran up to about 150 yards on my left to see what was going on--nether were shooters, so I continued cutting (my son's 110, i had forgotten to sharpen my vanguard). My son then suggested I look up straight ahead. From the other side of the hill 4 bucks had also come up to check out the action, about 100 yds away. I wiped off my hands, quickly glassed them and told my son they were all too small, and went back to work. My son then said "Dad", just look to the left of the 4, there is a good one". Well i again wiped off my hands and glassed him, quickly discovering that he was the best we had seen on that ranch or any other ranch on the mesa. I got my .270, and set up on the sticks. First the buck joined the other 4, and was covered up. Then when he got clear, i had to wait until he moved to the right to clear cattle that were about a mile away on an adjoining ranch. Finally, he jogged a bit and then stopped. He went down at the shot, and our hunt was over. The 110 did the job on both antelope (i have since acquired two more 110s (custom with S30v and Cabela's AG) and 2 more Vanguards, just to be on the safe side). It is always good to be lucky, and to have plenty of buck knives.

Whiskers, Great hunt . Sometimes luck helps too . Sounds like you two were near Clayton ? Lots of Antelope around there . Glad you had a sharp Buck knife on you to help the work go easier . I think you'll like the Alaskan Guide model 110 . DM

Note to self: don't take the 7mm Short Action Ultra Mag white-tail hunting any more!
Buck BG-42 Custom was a delite to skin this doe

Scott, Glad you were able to harvest a doe . I've used an anti-aircraft cannon before as well . Its more suited to the open country out west . That looks like a nice Buck knife to try out . Has plenty of belly for skinning . DM

Eh, ya dont eat the neck anyway. Good shot, a shoulder/vitals woulda certainly ruined some serious meat:(

Good shot Scott. How did the knife feel in the hand when you were skinning.

Also did you use is to quarter her up?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff, that is a 921,or a 925...it's the smallest of the of the 3 produced. The smallest one, in the pic, was great. I could choke up on it with 1 finger in front of the guard and apply a lot of pressure. I used it to gut the deer, as well as skinning it and quartering it up. Buck really should keep that knife in production, the design is outstanding for "real use".

Sat in a blind all day Friday...didn't see a thing.

Sat all morning Saturday in the same blind.....didn't see a thing.

Sat in a different blind Saturday around 3pm, and about 3:30 got this big boy about 25 feet from the blind. :)

Wonderful deer guys! Good job Scott. That's one heckuva hole there Scott! Something tells me you didn't have to look too hard for that deer.
Congrats on your second buck Sithus. Bucks don't come easy. I don't think harvesting a buck will ever be called "gathering".
That's a fine looking buck Bear Claw. Congrats! I had a nice buck coming in this morning. He was moving up the fence row toward me and my son, but he decided to bed down. He got up and came closer but then bedded again. Eventually he moved off the other way. Of course when he first came in he walked right by one of my other stands. Here is a trail cam pic of him (near one of my favorite climbing trees). The date on the pic is off by a day...should be the 20th.
