My son and I were hunting (self-guided) on a ranch on a large mesa in NE New Mexico. During scouting the 3 days before opening day, saw some large bucks on other ranches, where we couldnt hunt, and does and small bucks where we could hunt. We figured we would hunt hard for two days and not see anything shootable (we were looking for nicely shaped horns, this is not an area for 15" bucks). On the morning of the hunt, saw two bucks, too far away to judge, at the base of a large hill in the distance. Decided to take a stab at it, and drove around to the back of the hill, and started out over the hill. After about 30 minutes just before the last rise before topping out, i had my son chamber a round and put it on safe. We snuck slowly over the top heading toward where the two bucks were at last sighting. I looked to my right (with antelope, i have learned that they will pop up anywhere), and there was a shooter buck who was curious about what we were up to. My son set up and put him down. Before i started field dressing I suggested my son watch to all sides while i did the needful. First the two bucks we had been stalking ran up to about 150 yards on my left to see what was going on--nether were shooters, so I continued cutting (my son's 110, i had forgotten to sharpen my vanguard). My son then suggested I look up straight ahead. From the other side of the hill 4 bucks had also come up to check out the action, about 100 yds away. I wiped off my hands, quickly glassed them and told my son they were all too small, and went back to work. My son then said "Dad", just look to the left of the 4, there is a good one". Well i again wiped off my hands and glassed him, quickly discovering that he was the best we had seen on that ranch or any other ranch on the mesa. I got my .270, and set up on the sticks. First the buck joined the other 4, and was covered up. Then when he got clear, i had to wait until he moved to the right to clear cattle that were about a mile away on an adjoining ranch. Finally, he jogged a bit and then stopped. He went down at the shot, and our hunt was over. The 110 did the job on both antelope (i have since acquired two more 110s (custom with S30v and Cabela's AG) and 2 more Vanguards, just to be on the safe side). It is always good to be lucky, and to have plenty of buck knives.
