Hunting, Trapping, Fishing and other animal gathering methods...

The economy is so depressed in Southwestern Virginia, even if I were a Fish and Game Officer, I don't think I could in good conscience cite or arrest some people for poaching a deer. I have family that basically lived like that down there up until around 1994. I'm sure it is not the only place like that and I'm equally sure that nowadays, it's much worse.

When I was growing up in the country round here. The Game dept. folks that were known to the told us to go ahead since they knew we needed it.

The guys they caught with a pickup truck full of five elk weren't so lucky.

That was a lont time ago and times have changed....drasticaly.

My plan is to start foraging just as soon as I conclude I am in a potential long term survival situation . I would collect fish and game by the most expedient methow I had at hand or could devise.

Same here. They way I see it is that if I'm stranded I had better start looking after my survival needs post haste. Mother nature doesn't wait for anybody.

The way I see it, hunting/fishing/trapping laws were written to regulate those pursuing game for sport or profit. If you're doing it because you're lost in the woods then I figure those are some rules meant to be broken.

That is EXACTLY how it should be. Unfortunately, we are reverting back to The King's Lands.

You know, I have not had a fishing license for over a decade and I called up the local shop and it's $42.00 now for just freshwater fishing (1 adult). I was going to get the wife and I our fishing licenses and also hunting licenses but we just can't afford it so we won't be hunting and fishing. I mean, I don't want to hear any of the excuses about funds needed for this, that and the other. With this state, there is always some scam or another going on. Forty-two bucks for one adult, freshwater only, not salt (extra) or trout stamps or other things, just to go plop the line in and get a sunfish, 42.00, amazing. I shudder to think what a hunting license with a deer stamp is now.

The price of a hunting and fishing license in Ct. doubled this year as did deer, turkey and pheasant tags. We also got hit for a salt water fishing license for the 1st time this year.:grumpy::thumbdn:--KV

Hey Guys..

Oh Hell Yes..

I'm not even Opposed to a little practice from time to time...

It's one thing to set a snare, or a night line, etc etc in theory,, quite another to do it for real...

I'm not advocating poaching or running off season or illegal trap lines,, I'm just saying,, if you plan to use these methods to procure food in a situation,, then some experience beforehand is Crucial..

Many Things Change when it's For Real.

Changing the batts on your flashlight on the ground is different than changing them at 20 foot or 100 foot..

Experience Trumps Theory All day long..

Im pretty sure you wouldn't be even charged if you did "illegal" things in order to survive. Even if you would be charged, anyone with common sense agrees that the law must be broken in situation like that.

So my answer is; I'd love to break the law! :D

If I was hungry and lost I would fish with dynamite.:::D There are no rules if you think your life is in danger.

Gospel.

...the cardinal rule: there are no rules in a true survival situation.

Bob,

I'm glad you agree because this thread was really my version of a morality play and comparative analysis of logic and reason after taking a beating in the urban survival thread over what many considered to be illegal activities regardless of the situation a person faced. I think I should have split that up somehow into a couple more sentences... :)

KV,

Local governments profited greatly from people's homes being totally over-valued. A $150,000.00 three bedroom rancher with two baths is never, in any sane universe, going to be worth over a quarter of a million dollars within a decade, simple. Now that everything is going through a correction, and a massive one at that, the governments are not collecting as much tax revenue - they became greedy pigs! They need that money, not to run things, but to fuel their slush funds. So, they're making it up in other ways now and this is one of them. It has nothing to do with wildlife management, etc., it all has to do with the pig needs to eat more and more all the time. 8-)

Don,

I think I must have missed that urban survival thread (hate it when I do that): I'll have to look it up.

I, who often forgets to break paragraphs, should be the last person to grade you on sentence structure. You, unlike some people online nowadays, do well. Some others in various places, however, are nearly incomprhensible.

Well, this thread has not been targeted by the merry band of bladeforums balloon knots who like to go into subforums they otherwise have no interest in and stir up hate and discontent. :)

A month or so ago when I had a run-in that ended badly, yes, one of the long-time members in here said there is a group of people who go into forums that they have no interest in and do this.
