Hurricane Sandy landfall

Gusts of 70+ here in CT but luckily we still have power. I just need enough juice to catch my Niners tonight :D

My relatives in three different towns in Western Massachusetts all lost power this afternoon and haven't got it back yet. They let me know by text message -- texts can get through even when the phone system is congested. I'm in yet a fourth town in Western Mass and haven't even had a flicker -- yet.

^^

From what I've heard a lot of sub stations are getting the plug pulled on purpose to keep the infrastructure from getting as damaged this year. Salt water, rain water and wind with high voltage don't necessarily make the best bed fellows.

I think that was in New York and New Jersey (I could be completely wrong on the states). I'm not sure about Massachusetts, but it's a solid idea for when it comes time to get everything up and running again. Just really isn't that swell if you're in the areas blacked out.

I could care less about power but the surge worries me. The latest from my town is a 17 foot surge. Not good.

I know its the wrong side of Massachusetts but have you (or anyone else for that matter) heard anything about the Swampscott/Lynn area? My uncle is up there, a block or so from the bay, and I haven't been able to get through to him.

The reported death toll here in the U.S. now stands at 4, not counting the missing Captain of the Bounty.

I have just been watching the CNN coverage........it looks shocking and now it is snowing. PLEASE be careful there folks..........

It's pretty much over here in central Maryland. Kind of an anti climatic storm. Lots of rain and wind, but thats all. No loss of power, no damage to the house. Still raining lightly, but very little wind, and theres a feeling of the storm is over here. Some downed trees on the roads, some loss of power in neighborhoods closer to D.C. and snow in western Maryland.

I never got to open the fresh jug of whiskey. Maybe I'll have a nice toddy with my breakfast.

Carl.

My power went out at 11:00 pm last night and is still out. Lots of rain and wind but no damage

My brother in law and sister in law's home in Howard Beach, NY has been devastated by flooding. The entire basement has completely filled and come up to the first floor of the residence.

On top of that, their three vehicles, (his, hers, daughter's) have been inundated by flood and literally washed (floated) away. Total losses.

Thankfully they were not harmed physically but the trauma for them and so many others will last for a long time to come.

we didn't get it too bad in Gloucester...we are about 15 miles north of Lynn...I know scituate and other south shore towns had a bad storm surge. a friend in Saugus had some trees fall...

As for the captain of the bounty, it is always tragic when someone is lost at sea, but the coast guard was putting out storm warnings on VHF ch. 16 and 22 for 5 days before the storm came and was advising all mariners to return to port or seek safe harbor by Saturday night. The Gloucester tuna fleet fishing on Georges were tied up by Sunday morning. That ship should never have left Connecticut until after the storm passed. The lives lost in that shipwreck were due to the negligence of a captain who thought he could "outrun" the second biggest Atlantic hurricane in history...:(
