Hurricane Sandy landfall

My brother in law and sister in law's home in Howard Beach, NY has been devastated by flooding. The entire basement has completely filled and come up to the first floor of the residence.

On top of that, their three vehicles, (his, hers, daughter's) have been inundated by flood and literally washed (floated) away. Total losses.

Thankfully they were not harmed physically but the trauma for them and so many others will last for a long time to come.
Sorry Blues glad everyone is ok though.

Thanks for the good thoughts, Matty. There are so many folks who are going to need them...and a lot of help.
No problem. I was thankful to make it through in one piece. Can't imagine what its like everywhere else.

I don't know anybody in that area. Try sending him a text message. If you don't have a phone with texting capability you can do it on the web, at websites like http://www.textem.net/
Thanks for the link, Cougar. I will continue to resist getting a smart phone but think that I'll probably at least re-enable texting. I have it blocked because of all the stoopid ads I was getting.

we didn't get it too bad in Gloucester...we are about 15 miles north of Lynn...I know scituate and other south shore towns had a bad storm surge. a friend in Saugus had some trees fall...

Spoke to my uncle a little earlier and he said much the same. The surge came close to breaching the sea wall near his house but thankfully didn't. Other than that, localized damage in Lynn and Marblehead, with a few buildings wiped out, but nothing like in other coastal areas in the region.

Damn Elliot I am sorry to hear that. You must both be so worried.
I am glad to hear that they are physically safe but it is always so devastating when your whole life is turned upside down dealing with such loss.

Please let them know that we are thinking of them............

Take it easy there mate.

Steven

Thanks, Steven. We spoke with them shortly after I got off the phone with you yesterday and everything was under control. It all went to hell very rapidly afterward.

Thanks for the good thoughts, I will be sure to pass them along.

... one which was advancing at 15 knots while he was advancing at 10 knots toward it. Well, at least no one will say of this Captain, “Vada a bordo, cazzo”!!

Hoboken, NJ will have a new fleet of taxis soon it seems.

my brother and sister-in-law live in manhattan. their building lobby is flooded. My college roomate lives there as well and his street is impassable. they took a pummeling down there. :( the south shore of Mass. got hit hard too. Up on Cape Ann we got wind and some high surf but that's about it...landwise we were ok...we will get out to the lobster gear probably thursday. That might be another story...

Greenwich got hit pretty bad, it's surreal seing boats that have floated up to the road. I, however, have no complaints. Some fence sections had to be repaired and a LOT of my roof shingles were all over the neighborhood but my family and our home are basically all right.

I am fortunate while many were not. My thoughts and prayers go out to those of you who are struggling to recover.

Prayers for everyone affected by the storm. We were lucky, only lost power from 8pm Monday through 12pm. Some downed trees and closed roads.

Saying we had 7 inches of rain in 2 days..Winds 60 plus gusts.. Snow will start now.. Power was out ..And go out again from falling trees..
Only damage was 30 foot of my barn roof gone..Lots a trees down on my property ..In the area,, Flooding in all creeks roads closed all over...Power is out in some areas yet.
My unit.. Will be heading down to help search and rescue crews tonight.. Going to take some time to go thru some towns ..Seen worse , but its bad.
Greg....

Very sorry to hear that. It's sad when your life is turned upside down like that. But they have each other at least, and nobody was hurt?

I guess they only thing one can take comfort in is, things can be replaced, but the people you love are priceless. Best wishes for your families recovery.

Carl.

Finally heard from some family down on the Eastern shore of Maryland. They are working watermen on the Choptank, and they lost one of the two family crab boats, and the pier in the back of the house was half torn away.

Lots of smoke, prayers, and positive thoughts to those folks devastated by this storm. Stay strong and don't ever give up.

Power went out Monday night at 8:30 pm, (2 hours after I posted in this thread, ;) ), the power came back on at 5:00 pm tonight.

Elliot, smoke and prayers your way, glad to see most weathered the storm otherwise.
