Hydraulic press build question (pics added)

Well, it may be OK. That 12" depth adds some steel over my 8" beam for sure! Plates are not hard to add later, at any rate.
 
Don't know if you can get anything useful out of this photo. This is me on the press at J.R. Cook's shop. I like this press design a lot. The one thing it lacks is a good way of holding the dies securely. I would say you need a good plan for that.

If I can get the time this week I'll model one up based on your I beam and cylinder in Inventor. Partly because I intend to build one myself soon.
 
Thanks Salem, the beam has 5/8" face wall with a 1/2" inside web, and 8wX12d

A friend of mine helping with the build suggested almost a fin along the backside for added strength, he sent me a picture I'd have to find it. I like the sound of what you described though because it wont stick out the back

Your friend suggested ok. The stiffness go up with the ^3 of the thickness. But you will need to be sure the beam will not "corkscrew" instead if you only weld a fin along the backside.
