All this about who has been here a long time, and getting on in age. I am getting older, but haven't been here as long as alot of folks. Does that make me an older noob? Or maybe an olnoober?

Hi Bruce

I can't remember all that I learn. The last few years I haven't been able to spend much time on knife making, only made 5 last year and haven't completed any yet this year, but have some that I'm working on. I do more work when it starts getting fall time.
I have a 13 year old son who I spend time with, trap shooting and playing golf, etc. Some Times I don't get here for a few weeks, but also go back and check out the forums.

Are you still working with the adults, or have you retired yet? I have about 13 1/2 to go, if I don't buy time. I work with the junviles.

I dont work at the big house anymore. Washington had to balance the budget so they sent me home to make knives. They gave me unemployment and 3 quarters of college but now its just me and the 2 girl dogs grinding away. I love it.

Oh man, what a grand thread Bruce, thanks for starting it!!!!!
It doesn't feel like it's been 9 years since I signed up!
I was grinding with a stone mounted in a table saw back then, lol!
What ever happened to Mike Turber, the gent that used to own the forums? Does he ever show up here and check it out?
It's really amazing when you remember all the things that went on here and the people that were responsible for em and all the forumites that have passed away! So many knife makers that have moved on to other things for one reason or another. Some members that just don't visit here anymore and have found other web sites to frequent.
Deep down, I'm with Nick, " I find myself "missing the old days" around here"!!!
Ah, time changes everything and there's nothing we can do about it!
I sure do love you bastids!!!!! :D

According to Spark, Bladeforums.com has been open to the public for 10 years now. It started on October 2, 1998. I joined the following year. I now have grey hair, bald spot, sagging chest, flat feet, 30% loss of hearing and hair growing from my ears since I started here.

Many makers have come and gone and I rocognize nearly every name in the knife magazines and annual. Several of the newbies are now journeyman or mastersmiths. What a wonderful bunch of knifenuts you guys are!

Funny post Bruce :D

Don't feel too bad bro, I suffer from many of the same things you do. No bald spot or sagging chest......yet, but this ear hair thing, what the heck is that all about
I'll go to bed and wake up with 6" long hairs poppin out of my ears !!

I wanted to say how blessed we've been to have you here. I've learned so much from you over the past years (we all have). If I had to list it all......... I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Thanks for stick'in around buddy  BladeForums is a much, much better place because of you and some of the other "Old Timers" ;) Thanks !!

:)

Bruce you made me actually look to see when I joined.... 11-13-98. Havent really given it much thought, dont feel like ive aged a day since then.

Now where the hell are my teeth:grumpy:

Been around this forum since '98 myself. I remember when I saw some of the members at the Orlando show they were surprised that I was male.
Been around this earth long enough to be a great grand father!
Appreciating the help and advice,
Lynn

you know this is what I love about this place every couple of weeks someone throws themselves to the wolves for our entertainment:D alright which old bald saggy chested ear hair infested farts up next:p oh and I am just now dealing with the nose hair thing recently that crap is annoying and painful

I recall some or most of the folks from days gone by...

To pick on a few...

L6Steel...one of his first post was if he could use a radial arm saw for a surface grinder. I recall Tom Mayo chiming in that it wasn't such a great idea.

Tim Herman and his "knifeshop by the lake" thread. Funny stuff, at the expense of Chiro75. Tim later got banned for doing this or that. I really enjoyed his post, incorrigible as they were.

Bruce Evans was here quite a bit and had great tutorials. My buddy Terry Primos came and went. Terry's tutorial using JB Weld as a sealant between the guard and tang was top-notch.

Darrel Ralph and Kit Carson were the mods back then. Mark Williams came along quite a bit later. It was from Darrel's prompting that the supplier's list was started. It isn't as fluid as it once was. I didn't truly realize the monumental task that was at hand when it was first taken on.

I remember when Ed Caffery received his journeyman's stamp and later his Mastersmith's. In my opinion, Ed is one of the foremost bladesmiths in the country, if not the world.

I went to the intro course in Old Washington with Mace and Sabre (Dan) in September 2001, right after 9/11. Mace has come a long way. (You make a fine blade, pal.) I, on the other hand, have been sidetracked to some degree. I am still making knives, just not as often. Sometimes life gets in the way of our desires. I'll get back and be more indulgent with my first love, in time.

Stalwart members at the time were Ed Caffery, Jerry Hossom, Mike Hull, Tom Mayo, Bruce Bump, Bruce Evans, Rob Simonich, Mad Poet, Nick Wheeler, Dan Gray, Tracy, L6Steel and who can forget Nathan House, or The Zodiac, or Da'quota for entertainment? I know I have left others out and please forgive me. My memory is not as young as it once was. Rob Frink frequented here often as well. I finally met Rob in Old Washington a few years ago. What a great guy!

Yes, when I first got here, I was looking for the best steel too! :D

I have made numerous friends through this website and forum. It tends to attract a number of good folks.

:D:D I remember the "Tom and Jerry Show" , Those two finally had to get there own thread to finish some of their arguments :D
It was good to see Indian George come here to take up some of the slack after they left.

Bruce Evans had some great tutorials. Remember those dragon slayers bowies he used to make? Killers!

I miss Peter Nap and fear that he is not well now. I heard from him via email last year several times but his health was failing fast. He was to stubbord to listen to the doctors.

Mike Hull is another one we are all better because of him.

I was a stock removal guy back then and hadnt joined the ABS yet.

Nick Wheeler wasnt shaving yet. He trusted me to do the heat treat on one of his daggers he ground out from ThunderForged damascus and I broke it in half trying to straighten out the big bend it had. I still think the steel was crap and wasnt my fault. Anyway thats probally when he decided to do his own heat treating :D

I havnt missed more than a dozen days from this place since then. Its a great place to hang out.
