Holly mackerel some of you guys do carry some heavy packs. As for me this saturday im planning on an 18-19mile hike with about 3000-4000ft elevation gain and loss. Im going to carry 6liter of water and the most basic kit...to cut the weight down..

psy-ops, What kind of water bottle is that and where might i find one?

I got mine from Brigade Quarter masters. It is a GI canteen with a stainless cup. The cup can be used for boiling water.

I got it last year in response to a "what are the essentials thread" posted here.

daypack? I knife some water bottles a bandana and a raincoat, lighter and match box. I think that's it.

PS. How does everybody keep their packs and gear so CLEAN!????? All my stuff always looks scratched up and muddy compared to pics like the above.

Well gee HD, you really use yours alot. Pat

HD - Looking at Rock6's stuff, I'd say its good soldiering... I don't care about some rust on a blade, but I won't have dirty, wet gear. My days in the military taught me to keep my gear and my feet as clean and dry as possible.. The romance of "dirt time" faded pretty quickly for me when I was cold, wet and dirty day after day. You could watch the affect of that environment on people's morale and it seemed like water and mud could permeate everything, including sealed packages... Probably not important to me now as a recreational hiker, but I can't shake off the lesson and approach....

Heres what I got with me.

Now, all this is with me everyday, even in the woods, or on a park trail. But the firstaid kit stays in the car, or close by.
