What is it about Spyderco knives that they are so special? (I am no expert)

PLease explain....

Here are a few:
They are functionally designed knives. Made with decent materials; quality steel for the blades, and good locking systems for safety.
Some people don’t like the cost, but I feel you get what you pay for when it come to Spydercos.

Spyderco has a wide array of knives that are all task-oriënted. because they are task oriënted they do their intended job very well but look "weird" sometimes. IMHO Spyderco knives are the knives you buy to get the job done. As an ELU (End Line User) they have my confidence that my knife will perform under the circumstances why i bought the knife.
They have very good blade steel, use top of the bill materials, and have a very good warranty service.
They also are constantly looking for input and refinements from their ELU.
They do not design their knives to look pretty that's why we call them "fugly":D

The are very reliable, no nonsense knives. You get a lot for your money. While others are cutting back on costs and making their knives with cheaper, less desirable materials, Spyderco often improves on present knives while keeping them at a reasonable price or even at the same price.
Mongo-man is right. We had a discussion a few days ago about Spydercos. They are fugly. Maybe not "f*cking ugly", but rather "FUNTIONALLY UGLY".

Summarized: very high quality knives that are perfect when you buy them. And if they're not perfect, their W&R will help you out.
And those knives look bloody good once you get used to them.

No need for me to add anything, but I always thought they were just stupid looking and way too expensive. Then I got educated about knives; quality, steels, functionality, etc. Most of that education came from all of these folks here at BladeForums. I now own about 15 Spydercos personally and present a new Delica to each new employee I have.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Stick around and get "educated" like me.

I don't think you get ripped for a simple question, however if you said "spyderco sucks" THEN you get ripped and should probably be careful of large packages with no return address. I like them because they were the first one hand knife i remember seeing. After i had a few l like them for quality of manufacture and design. yes they are seriously ugly, if you grew up on a case trappers/stockman,but they work really well and customer service is excellant. go buy several, later ahgar

I feel that you get a whole lot of knife for a little money!! You get an amazing company to boot!! Spyderco LISTENS to their ELU's!! They take amazing care of their customers. They way Spyderco does business is a shining example to ALL businesses!!

While it's true most spyderco's are fugly. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous. I'm absolutely in love with the caly 3 prototype photos that are floating around the net. I could frame those images and put them on the wall.

I also had similar feelings about Syderco knives mostly due to lack of knowledge. I bought a Native at Wally-World to try out and I like the knife. I took the clip off though. I was interested in how they feel, steel, sharpness, ease of sharpening etc. I am pleased overall.

Quality, better premium blade steel, locks you can trust, super warranty and customer service, affordable to the average working man and an owner that answers questions and is a member here as well as other forums makes for a hard to beat combination of reasons to support Spyderco and why they are such a great product and company.

I want to add that Sal Glesser, the president and founder of Spyderco, is one of the finest gentleman in business... in ANY business, not just knives.
You feel confidence of buying a knife from this guy.

Sorry for my english :o

Spyderco knives are good value and good quality. With that said there are lots of other good quality knives that never get good air play simply because of the marketing strategy or lack of. Spyderco is in your face in knife publications and the like. I bought one 15 years ago and like it. The only thing I don't like about it is that the blade does stain easily if exposed to salt water for even just a splash. So I would not recomend using it around salt water if you wish to keep it pretty.

I'm another person that came here in a world of knife ignorance and had a multitude of people tell me to get a Spyderco. I knew nothing about them. I had glanced at some of their knives before on a few knife dealing websites and found the designs unnattractive.

Eventually I just went out on impulse and bought myself a Delica. I'll just echoe the others and say that all the materials feel very solid, the lock is extremely secure feeling, the grip is nice and allows a variety of hand positions and overall it just has the work-horse feel. A knife that was meant to be used. Designed with use in mind, not trends or flash and other things of the like. I'm very pleased, and less than a few months ago I was someone who could never see myself spending 20$ on a folding knife, much less 50.

Your english comes across very well and I could not agree more about your observations regarding Sal.

For me it is that every Spyderco knife I have owned, and there have been many, has been a high quality knife that has been basically problem free. The only time that I have ever had to deal with Spyderco service was when I lost a screw from the handle of my original Military. I had a new screw in under a week and that included the extra time involved in getting the part to Canada. They sent me a few extra screws as well.

Also, the fact that Sal takes the time to be greatly involved in his forum here, and in personally answering questions that people have raises the company in my esteem.

Spyderco have an impeccable reputation for taking care of their customers. The look of their knives is not for everyone, but you can be assured that if you get one of their knives, you will be getting a quality product, and if there are problems they will be taken care of. What more can you ask for?

I would also second the fact that Spyderco has so much integrity.
I am amazed with all the corporate greed we hear about these days that Spyderco keeps getting better.

I am forever a loyal customer.

Spyderco has used a tremendous variety of steels over the years. Without knowing which you had a problem with, I can say you might want to try the new Salt models which use H1 steel. NO corrosion, even in salt water.

You actually thought this post was gonna get you ripped?

You wanna see ripped? Bubba, hold my beer and watch this.

Ssypdercos are overpriced and ugly. They look like something that should be attached to a robot's arm instead of being placed in a man's pocket.

And worst of all, they're stainless.

Give me a good old Case CV any day.
