I am gonna get ripped, but.....

The reason I love Spyderco is mostly for the design...they're so ergonomic and they perform specialized functions (or general functions) really well.

They also tend to use high end steels without the high end prices...I mostly deal in the higher end spydercos, so this doesn't really affect me, but when I was buying them for christmas gifts, it was nice to know I could get an s30v knife for my brother for 40 bucks.

I really like how spydercos look, too. Weird, huh? I hate them all at first, but after seeing them and using them, I love them.

If I had to pick one weakness of spyderco, it's that they only seem to think about their knives being open (folders). When closed, my 2 inch blade dodo is bigger than most of my 3 inch blade knives...significantly bigger. The same is true of my para, and the same is REALLLLLY true of the d`allara. But if size when closed isn't an issue, this can't really bother you.

You wanna see ripped? Bubba, hold my beer and watch this.

Ssypdercos are overpriced and ugly. They look like something that should be attached to a robot's arm instead of being placed in a man's pocket.

And worst of all, they're stainless.

These are all personal preferences and opinons. If someone doesn't like the looks of Spyderco knives, or like stainless, or thinks that Spyderco knives are overpriced, they should not be flamed for feeling that way. We all have our preferences and our own thoughts on what makes knives overpriced. I don't agree with you, but that doesn't make me want to deride you the way you feel.

Big Ugly Tall Texan's got a point - Spyderco oughta jump on the carbon steel (preferrably tool steel) bandwagon IMO. And unlike Case and such, I know Sal would do the steel right by properly heat treating it.

That said,

Spyderco is "great" for consistantly offerring good quality for the money in a highly diverse array of choices (not always in current production, but they are there or being considered). They stand-by their products with a solid warranty that is easy to utilize.

Personally, I don't currently own that many Spyderco knives (a Dodo and three Militarys) for various reasons. But I have dealt with them over the years and have observed that most owners were satisfied (if not more enthused) with their knives - and that is what makes or breaks a firm.

It has always puzzled me that so many who post on these forums find Spyderco products to be "fugly," even some of the conmpany's greatest fans; to my astonishmen, even Sal Glesser, himself!

Possibly because of it, but back when I knew nothing about knives I though Spydercos looked great. My notion is that those who have had much knife experience probably formed their aesthetic opinions based on what had previously been available. I came into it without knowledge or experience with anything other than kitchen or slip joint pocket knives, so I had no expectations to overcome.

Based on favorable reports from these forums, my first Spyderco was an FRN Delica (SE). I was so impressed with its performance (and looks!) I picked up an Endura (PE), same result. I am aware there are other great products out there, but for as for me, Spyderco sets the standard for production knives, and I find them beautiful, as well.

Fugly is not ment as a derogatory verb. Tractors don't have to look like ferrari's.

If i take a wealthy Ferrari owner to a John Deere showroom he will think twice before buying one, but the farmer who looks at his John Deere tractor who provided him with food on his table for the last 20 years shure thinks it's a beauty!

And tractors are fugly too :D

I think Big ugly texan is suffering from PTSD. We need to humor him.

Personally, I think Big Ugly Tall Texan is rolling on the floor about now, laughing his head off, and trying to keep that tongue STILL firmly in cheek! ;) (but I could be wrong)

BUTT going for drama.

Very Good knife for the money. Carried one during my time in the Army, always did the job I asked of a knife.

i dont own a spyderco and think they're ugly, but i will get a few in the near future.i think the company is run by an honest, down to earth guy who does the best possible for his customers [not that other companies owners are'nt].

NOPE, You got it. "Hold my beer and watch this" should have been a VEERY GOOD CLUE!!!

Spydercos are ugly compared to some other knives, but they are supremely functional and practical... which makes them beautiful. They're good knives, even if they are SS. I still think they are little pricy. But as I have said before, there is a market for every price.

Subtle humor from Big Ugly Tall Texan..
Speakin' of Texans when are they gonna make that 5" folder?

High Performance, fair prices and the personal word of the founder/owner that they stand behind their products. That makes me happy.

Why I like Spydercos.
Whilst I don't like all the styles they produce (but I do like the vast majority), I know that any model I buy will have excellent erganomics, excellent steel, and be designed exclusively for cutting.

Well....Thanks a bunch amigos. Seems like they have a lot of loyal customers.
I appreciate the response. Honestly, I think they aren't the best looking knives around, but there is more to a knife than looks. Seems like a great knife.

Spydercos have been around for at least two decades. The fact that they have been around for so long sort of hints at something.
On top of that, some of the most thrilling movies features Spydercos. What does that tell you?

I am gonna get ripped too, but not until I get off work. ;)

Spyderco knives are some of the most purely useful pocket knives ever. In the 80s, they were innovators. Their products were unlike any we'd ever seen, and they were built solely to maximize utility and function - form was hardly a consideration. Their weird looks appealed to those of us who knew that these were such great tools. Their first model was called the Worker, for cryin' out loud.
Sal and the other folks at Spyderco have carried that same creative energy until now, tailoring their tools to meet the demands of workers in nearly every profession. They've made rescue knives, camping knives, hard-use military-style knives, office-appropriate knives, and many others. Recently (as in the last several years) they've also made some to appeal to collectors.
All in all, I don't think there's any other company that takes the user's needs into such consideration when designing a practical working knife.

Previous to Spyderco releasing thier Endura way back when,I carried a Buck style lock-blade with a "Flick-it" on the blade for one handed opening. The only drawback was the flick-it would interfere with cutting large items like a block of cheese. The Spyderco hole permits using the entire blade for cutting without any studs,flick-its or other protrusions hitting the item being cut.I therefore ordered my first of many Spydercos from the factory as they were so new at the time nobody ever heard of such an animal let alone selling them.I like them alot.YMMV.tom.:)

Why are Spydercos so popular on these pages? Here are a few reasons:
1) Functionality
2) great quality for the price, at any of Spyderco's price levels
3) Innovative design, even when the design sometimes doesn't seem to work as well as it might
4) THE BEST management team that I have ever seen in any company, starting with Sal Glesser
5) Involvement of management with its customers/users. Spyderco doesn't send flunkies out to conduct marketing forums to see what people want, Sal and company go themselves.
6) Great warranty/repair policies
