I am looking for a classy gentleman's folder for myself

I too would recommend the Fallkniven U2. I know it might be too ligt for you but it keeps an edge very well and looks classy, in a modern way.

Wow, thanks!! Great suggestions and great pictures!!!! I really appreciate the help. Any more ideas, keep them coming.

I edited my first post... I don't think I want something without a pocket clip. Does that mean the Fallknivens are out? I really like the look of that TK3 in mother of pearl!

I am not crazy about the handle shape of the 960.

The Mcusta's look thick, because of the wood handles. Also, liner locks, right?

I like the Native in CF, but I prefer the blade shape/size of the Caly3. What I want is the CF Sage with a lock back!

For an affordable yet classy folder check out the new CRKT Onion Ripple and Ripple 2. These are excellent for CRKT knives. The blade steel is not quite what you are looking for but these are really nice folders.

Well if you would increase your budget then there is no better and more beautiful gentleman's folder than Chris Reeves Mnandi.
Check out Falkiniven's PXL. It's a little heavy but extremely nice knife. Nice gentleman's folder but all of Falkinivens folders are.

I like this:

Hello,

The kind of knife you're looking for is exactly the kind I crave most myself.

The Caly 3 ZDP indeed fits all your needs.

Here are a few highly tempting alternatives, but all diverge in some way from your brief:

Both of these brands offer production knives with custom quality, that's no exaggeration:
- anything by Klotzli, should you find one within your budget. Swiss precision, and when titanium liner locks are made this precise, who cares that it's a liner lock? Typically over your budget.
- several Mokis come to mind. An elegant, high-quality brand.

- Several Mcustas come to mind, compact and high quality and perfectly executed liner locks

Two knives that demonstrate that the French know how to do gentlemen knives right:
- this wonderful Fontenille Pataud backlocking gentlemen laguiole is a bit dear, but worth it. i have a horn tip one

- within your budget, the superbly executed slipjoint Chambriard Le Compagnon.

It's a pity you are determined to have a pocket-clip...are you sure?

I'd recommend the Fälkniven lockback, it's superbly made and of quality materials.

As Dagon has just pointed out the MOKI lockback is worth serious consideration: Wonderfully made, precision workmanship.Very light in the pocket comes in nice jigged bone VG 10 blade has outstanding slicing characteristics 16cm/6.25" open. 3.75" closed comes with a nice cloth/leather lined pouch that can be worn on a belt or dropped into the work-bag.

You can go for the Fallkniven FH9 in Maroon micarta with pocket clip.

Also available in MOP, but sans pocket clip.

Oui! Oui! :D

Many great suggestions here. What about a Buck Mayo Waimea. It has a 2-5/8" S30V Blade with a Titanium Framelock. Very nice looking knife in a small size. Price is in between $150 and $200.

TONS of great suggestions here!! All these options are making me want many dress knives. Unfortunately, I can't even afford the ONE knife that I will end up deciding upon. However, IF someone asks what I want for Xmas (and that's a big IF), I want to be able to tell them something. Otherwise, I will try to scrape up the money after the holidays.

You all are a BIG help, with all the great ideas!! I still need to go back and research many of the suggestions more. THANKS!!

ETA: P.S. I like the looks of that Buck Mayo Waimea.

If you can wait long enough the sage will one day have a lockback. The sage concept is to have the same blade with multiple locking systems. The bolt action lock is next and a lockback will come out one day but when is anyone's guess. Might be a year or two down the road. I think a compression lock version is planned as well. How cool would it be if they licensed an AXIS lock for one model?

That doesn't help you now but might be something to look forward to at some point.

I'm a big fan of the OD-1 when I'm looking for something classy (cheap too). I dressed mine up in desert ironwood.

The real question is, what type of handles will be on that knife when they design one as a lock back or an AXIS? CF would be good.

The knives that I own that I would consider classy gents knives are these:
Gents002.jpg

Top to bottom - BM 440, Buck Waimea, Moki Glory, and Queen small stockman. The Moki does not have a pocket clip, but it has outstanding fit and finish.

These also probably qualify - UKPK and CF Caly 3:

I love my Ka-bar Dozier folder in D2. It was less then $50, smooth as silk, light, attractive, and cuts like a lazer.

I have handled the Spyderco Centofante III and I wasn't impressed with the fit and finish. At the top of my list right now is the carbon fiber Caly3 with ZDP-189 blade.

Ok gurus, what can you recommend for me? :)

I like the Benchmade Kulgera in this niche and carry it sometimes when dressed-up. It is similar to the Centofante III in size but has much better fit and finish. I also like the discontinued Benchmade 921s, but any of the Osbornes is a good pick.

Lone Wolf makes some very nice knives in this space, too. The Paul Presto is well built with good materials and a classy look. They have a few slightly larger knives that are worth a look, too.

The Spyderco Kiwis and Kopas are aimed right at dress-up days with mother of pearl and a variety of inlays.

I had a CF Caly 3 and sold it. My current suit pants knife is a Chris Reeve Mnandi (which is out of the range you suggested, but nice) and a Buck Mayo TNT.
