I am obsessed with carbon fiber

This is the exact knife I should be getting tomorrow (I'll be stalking the mailman). What a gorgeous knife! Who can't love it?

I just got this awesome CF/Damascus Caly 3 in today.
These aren't my pics but it's my exact knife. Got these from the man I traded with.

Just to feed the obsession a little more. :D

Do you really think it's worth it? I've been going back and forth over this knife for months to be honest. I love the design and the CF. But some have criticized the difficulty of opening, and I am not a slip joint fan by any means. So, I really want it, but can't bring myself to order it. Care to persuade me?

Well, austonh, I've been a big fan of BobT for a long time and have his other collaborations with Spyderco dating back to the early 1990s. I was really hesitant on the slipit to begin with - it just looked quirky to me. I wasn't sure about the lanyard thing, the shape of the thumb ramp was odd, the double-detent slip-it action was herky-jerky. I just wasn't sold on it yet.

Then I bit the bullet because I got a real discount on one. And I have to say that the knife has really really grown on me over the past year. The blade grind is simply beautiful. The fit and finish are superb. The lanyard is ... gone...

The thumb ramp has turned out to be one of my favorite features of the knife. It sits proud of the scales and provides your thumb just enough leverage to pop the blade off the open detent and start the closing action. you can also use the thumb ramp to pull the blade open from the half-detent to the full open position. Sort of like a mutant flipper - that only works when the knife isn't all the ways closed...

The detents and "action" of the knife? Well... I've come to like it and it has smoothed out a lot as the detents have seated. It is not like any other knife in my collection, I have to say - and it isn't what you would call smooth. But the action is very positive, very reliable, and fun to flip open and closed. The detents, in combination with the choil and the thumb ramp, make the slipit safety issue a non-issue. It is close to impossible to close the knife on your fingers if you have the knife in a regular grip.

Anyway - I've grown to really enjoy it. BobT and Spyderco are both class acts.

Thank you much!

Got a knife I've wanted for awhile. The Caly 3.5 ZDP-189. It's just outstanding. The CF is beautiful as is the blade. I have some better pictures but haven't uploaded them yet (photobucket is being a doodyhead)

I don't normally care for the looks of Spyderco knives, but that Caly damascus is so pretty. BladeChick777 and Locutus D'Borg are making me jealous, I may have to get one.

If you love some knife that doesn't come in CF, you can always go the custom route. I'm quite fond of my Southard, much more so now that it's wrapped in LSCF:

Good luck on that one, I have seen a few for sale. I don't get caught up on the whole "grail" thing, but the CF Stretch is the one discontinued knife I really want to obtain at some time. The CF S90V PM2 would be nice too, but the Stretch is more desirable to me.

I just picked up one in the exchange. I have been looking for some time as well and hope you find one soon. I really like the grippy texture of the peel-ply CF.
