Home from work and feel like hammered crap. Enough about me, reading the thread about the two stuntmen going into the woods with just a knife......and a camera man who is fully supplied and will stay with them the entire time, got me to thinking about atlatls. I have been doing a fair amount of studieing up on these things and am going to make my first one soon as I can kick this crud. They seem much easier to build than a good bow, there are videos on youtube how to build one, and they throw a big dart with a lot of force. I can see how a 6' long rivercane spear with a hand cut and sharpened chunk of steel on the end could make some big meat.

So anybody around here an experienced atlatlist willing to give a beginner some tips. Chris

I just got home from work as well, and am also sick... Topping it off, (another) guy quit at work yesterday meaning even more overtime for me, not sure whether to laugh or cry...

As far as the Atlatl, I haven't the slightest:D I just though I would join you in your misery! If you do get around to making one though, l would like to know how it worked out.

SC,
Man I hate to be sick, I have about 3/4s of a liter of Gentleman Jack, if you lived closer I would invite you over and we would try to drown our sorrows.:D

As far as the atlatl I have made my mind up and counted to 3, I'm making one, I will keep yall posted on how it works out. Chris

I would be up for that and your post is very coincidental as I am sitting here drinking Scotch! I think it is bedtime though...night shifts are starting to wear on me.

Sick As a dog?? Hop in your car and drive up to Illinoisy. Mongo our resident Vet could hook you up! Only a 10 hr. drive!

Tried the atlatl as a kid. Didn't have the patience for it then. Post your pics when you get through up chuckin' and get to dart chuckin'.

sorry to hear your sick - looking forward to your atlatl experiments though.

apparently the spanish conquistadors really feared the atlatl as a weapon system since it'd punch right through their armor at 100+ yard range.

Never tried the Atlatl, but I believe they are legal to hunt with in Pennsylvania. Seems like I read about that in Field and Stream or some other magazine a while back.

sorry to hear that your feeling sick.

you should try some ginger tea... you can flavour it with cinamon and a bit of honey.

gets you back on your feet. during the winter months i drink it through out the day. haven't been sick since i started this practice 2 years ago.

cheers

Hey Chris,

Sorry to hear you're sick.

My buddies and I fool around with atlatls a bit. Aside from any 'makin' meat' considerations, they are a hell of a lot of fun. I don't get too serious about it, because I have a bad back and it's sometimes problematic, but if I didn't, I would be dead serious about it.

One place for you to check is Paleo Planet. You should find more information than you need.

BTW, central vac tubing makes a usable dart quiver.

We should make the sick like a dog club. Been sick for two weeks now dont seem to get any better. After a while of lack of sleep my good mood is not as good anymore. The doc told me its going around alot the last month. As for Atlatls i tried it twice and gave up on it. living in LA there just not many places you can go to play with it. I got my ideas from Paleo Planet as Doc recommend. Get better soon lots of warm fluids and i found that a hot bath helps alot. Besides its a good place to read a good book.

Sasha

Chris, hope you feel better soon, but in true Wilderness Survival fashion you are thinking about atlatls, instead of dwelling on the sicko stuff, good for you.

Sorry, but I have only read about Atlatls, their use, and have never even held one in my hand, nor even viewed through a museum case.

Very interested in how it goes. Making it will be one thing, but I suspect becoming proficient in its use will be the real test. GodSpeed.

Sasha,
I am going to the doctor in the morning and I am really hoping I can talk him into some strong antibiotics. I know they don't like to perscribe them all the time but I have a big paintball game this saturday and want to get better fast. Chris

Hope you're well bro. I'd love to mess around with an atlatl. I'm in the process of making a few bows too...

Skunk,
It is the 12 Monkeys scenario game at Adventure beach paintball, come on down and play.

Fiddleback,
By all means post pics and keep us informed of the progress. I got interested in making bows and made a few, some worked quite well for a while then broke. A good bowyer is a true artist and I don't think I have the eye for it, I can make very decent arrows though. Chris

Chris, normally I'd really consider it, but my son is coming home from college, his first visit back since August. No can do, not this time.
But yeah, we gotta get together at a game. Stay in touch. Same Email for me as before.

Just don't throw an Atlatl at me during a game. I surrender!! :D

Hope you get those meds and feel better by the weekend.

Chris, check here for some atlatl links.

I have the Atlatl and Dart Workbook and it's a really good place to start. Other suggestions are the Society of Primitive Technology and here. If you scan down the page you will finds some articles that should get you started.

Let us know how you make out.

Doc

Just got back from the Doc, I got my drugs so I should be feeling better in a day or two. I have been looking at all the links and saving pictures of the atlatl styles I like, I will keep yall informed. Chris

Just figured I'd join the "sick as a dog" club. Good luck with the atlatl. Just like anything else, practice is needed for good consistant results. Hope you get well soon.

I look forward to seeing where this atlatl project goes..... best of luck!
