I dont know why but I have horrible knife ocd. My buying pattern usually works something like this.

1. Buy the knife

2. Fondle and play with the knife

3. Open a few boxes letters

4. Discover somehow somewhere you scratched the knife.

5. Against all logic the scratch bothers me and I obsess over it.

6. Disassemble knife and pimp it to remove any trace of said scratch and make the knife pretty again

7. Out of fear of it happening again and now because the knife looks so amazing I put it in its sheath/bag and dont use it.

The screwed up thing Is I know how stupid this is. Its a knife, I should use it and enjoy it and treat every imperfection as a badge of honor. But no matter how many times I tell myself that I just cant let go. I really think I need to just buy a $2000 custom and take it to a 6" bench grinder and just grind it down to a stub like the eraser on a pencil, mount it on a plaque as a reminder of how stupid I am about keeping knives in pristine condition. Im literally one step away from being the guy who handles his knives with white gloves only over carpet.

My Sebenza thought this thread was funny

I suffer from similar issues. My equally irrational resolution is that I buy two of a particular knife, use one, and keep the other one pristine. I have recently started to sell some of the multiples, but I'm not sure I have addressed the original problem.:D

If my knives don't have any scratches or coating wear, It bothers me. I would recommend some hard use to just get it over with.

PURPLEDC,
There's a very simple solution to your compulsion: Designate one knife as a User and allow it to be scratched, worn, resharpened, and dinged.
Set aside all the rest as Keepers. Don't use them or carry them, keep them in pristine condition since that matters to you.

Pretty much, that's exactly what I do. Over 500 bladed items in the Collection/Accumulation, and a small set of three or four users.

Why do you use it in the first place, if you're worried about marking it up? I have expensive knives put up that I've never used. I have others I use and don't care if they get marked up. You can't have it both ways, you either use them and stop the worrying or keep them mint for the purpose of collecting.

I can never get through a video review when I see those white gloves handling a knife. I believe it is the pinnacle of the worst of my obsession lol.

I can empathize with you DC. I used to be the guy that would obsess over that one scratch until I put more on it. If you have a hard time getting past that scratch maybe full titanium folders that can be bead blasted back to new with a spa treatment is your best option. That would take a lot of that worry away knowing you could spend $50/year to make your $500 knife pristine again.

I believe you just have to get past that first scratch. Not as easy as it sounds!

I do the same thing as this.

Keep using the knife with the scratch on it until it no longer bothers you. I was the same way with my vehicles. I had the dents taken out and then repainted so they were perfect. My last two vehicles a 1994 Ford F-150 and 2007 Chevrolet HHR panel have minor dents and I live with them I still keep my car clean and waxed but I am not going to let the dents bother me as I will probably get some more from a door dings and I will just live with it.

Sadly, I too am slightly afflicted with this syndrome. I have a Schrade SCHF9 that I cannot get sharp so it has become my "user" and I love beating the thing up, but it continues on unphased - uneven with a weak edge it handles most tasks okay.

People have used knives for many years proficiently without having more than 50 or constantly discussing them on forums. I like to think most of us here are of a select sick breed that gets way to much pleasure out of obsessing over our knives.

The thing is, we get varying amounts of pleasure from different aspects of our knives leading to a diversity of compulsions. Some want their knives to be used hard, others like to look at them, for some its opening them over and over and others making them as sharp as can be. But who here only cares about one of those? Not me...no, I want it all!

I feel your pain purple. We want to both use our knives that we love and keep them purty, yet by using them we wear them over time. Alas, you seem to be coping well with your compulsions, so godspeed, and may your knives wear at a rate lesser than they are used!

I bought all my CRKs pre-pocketwashed specifically to keep the scratches from bugging me. The patina is great. I've learned to stop worrying and love the snail trails.

It's refreshing to see some guys on here actually admit to OCD knife fetish. Don't worry many on here have it. DM

Why in gods name do you carry a dull knife?!?! I understand that it "handles most tasks okay", but something sharp would handle All tasks, and handle them well

Try ACTUALLY having OCD...

"Whoops my knife has a tiny dent in it I can see with a magnifying glass *sharpen*"

luckily, my ocd lasts for a short period of time. when I get a new knife I spend plenty of time looking it over, "playing" with it, and it soon looses the new knife smell....then im ok if it ends up with a few dings and dents. that's when the true evaluation begins and I decide if its gonna make its way into my carry/user rotation or if it'll be put away until I decide what I will do with it...keep, trade, gift it, or sell it to fund another knife.
