Hey guys, I am trying to decide which knife to buy next. I thought about getting a Spyderco Dragonfly, but after doing some research, I found some really cool looking Cold Steel knives. I really like the looks of the AK47 and Code 4 knives. I have no experience with Cold Steel folders. Are Cold Steel knives high quality or should I stick with Spyderco? Unfortunately, I can't handle the knives before buying since there are no local dealers in my area. As far as knife size goes, I usually carry an AFO 2 or PM2, so i am not opposed to large folders. I want something else to add to my rotation. Thanks

Do you own a buck 110 and are you apposed to 2 hand opening ?

Anyways cold steel knives are very well regarded to those who like them ( some people just love to hate cold steel ) no way to know if you like them without trying one, so just go for it.

How do you feel about lockbacks, because that's what most of the cold steel knives are. Personally, I don't care for their tri-ad lock. CS makes good knives, but I'd consider them more of a hard use, tactical knife.

Stick with Spyderco. :)

Spydercos are great. Manix 2 is very comfortable in hand.

If you want a benchmade, the H&K 14430BK with D2 steel looks interesting. I wouldn't mind that knife.

My budget is around $100. I am really leaning toward the Code 4 as far as Cold Steel goes. I want something durable that could hold up to hard use. I prefer one handed opening and I don't mind lock back knives.

I say go ahead and get the Code 4. I'm really happy with mine. I bought it mainly to try out CTS-XHP, and ended up with it in my edc rotation. And I don't particularly like lock-backs. I'm really liking the CTS-XHP, I convexed my edge, and have been happy with edge retention.

If you're set on the Code 4, I say go for it. You might also want to check out the American Lawman. Good ergos, great blade shape, and G10 is hard to beat.

You said your budget is around a buck. I have to throw out my bid for the Manix 2.

The updated Cold Steel knives are pretty nice and offer great performance while keeping costs low. Good material, simple design and solid build.. and I mean solid. They are also really big, IMO, even after the update which brought them smaller. They were huge before.

Technology has reached a level where linerless still maintains incredible rigidity and strength. The CS are a good example. Too big for my tiny hands though. Couldnt even open any smoothly cause they were too big.

Spyderco Tenacious! Quality, cost effective,, great size, ummm...sharp. The top two are less than $40.

Give a good look at AG Russell catalog with great variety and prices.

I already have the Manix 2.

I have a Code 4 clip point and really dig it. It has great ergos for me but the only downside to that and the knife imo would be the smooth grip. That would depend though on what you intend to use it for and it also could be fixed with some grip tape. It carries really well because it is thin and for me it tends to disappear in the pocket, even being somewhat wide.

I havent used my Code 4 as much as I have my Recon 1 but both have the xhp steel and I've put my Recon through it getting spots ready to hunt this year and I also used it last year doing the same and the xhp has held up extremely well.

There are a number of good knives from CS in that price range. If you're feeling the Code 4, go for it.

Other suggestions at that price point:
Benchmade Griptillian, Mini-Grip

You should still get something small like the Spyderco Dragonfly or Chaparral:D

Delica full flat grind in zdp 189. I think this design has been steadily improved to the point of perfection for an EDC.

Why were you considering the Spyderco Dragonfly? Its an entirely different knife than the Cold Steels you are looking at.

If there was some reasoning behind also considering that Spyderco, knowing it may hels up help you.

Of, if you are just looking for something "cool looking," then just get whatever you think is coolest looking.

I agree with marcinek. That is quite a shift from the Dragonfly to the Code 4.

If you are looking at Cold Steel also check out the Broken Skull. That is a very nice knife and within your budget.

I figured the Dragonfly would be a great edc knife, but Cold Steel never crossed my mind until I came across the Recon model in CTS XHP steel on a different website. I started researching Cold Steel products and found the Code 4. The Dragonfly would be easier to carry, but I have the Tenacious if I need a smaller knife.
