I bought a HT oven in eBay, good deal or...?

I am not the right person to ask about the kiln parts. I bought mine new but did do research on what was considered good and bad.

I think I need to suck it up and buy once. Thats why I am putting the list together to see what all the cost together would be. Any opinion on the items for the oven, should all be compatible?
Since you asked for opinions: I cannot imagine vise-grip pliers to be particularly useful for getting blades in and out of the oven. How do you adjust them if you have blades of different thickness in the oven? Do you really want to fumble with the release when putting a blade into the oven or quench plates wearing gloves? I think you need something else. The obvious choice would be to get a hammer, an anvil and a forge and make yourself some tongs... :D

Thanks guys. Please point out my stupidies. That's why I ask :)

Don't start me on the forge, I am already dreaming of it since I did a one day seminar in Croatia. I just think it would be too risky in my small underground shop (and I am irrationally afraid of gas/propane bottles in closed spaces). I REALLY want to do stainless San Mai. :)

That s lot of money for pliers used for this purpose :)
Get one of this , the cheapest and longest you can find ...
Put them in vise with closed jaw and cut with angle grinder right between jaws.Open vise ,close jaw again put in vise and cut again...do that till you get handles in comfortable position to hold with steel in jaws. be careful to not over done , use some steel in different thickness you will make knifes to see when is enough ...

I was waiting for you to show up! I was already looking for cheaper pliers, there is even a lot of blacksmithing tongs in local classifieds for less money. Also is 400mm really necessary, I feel they could get away from from me?

And finally, your opinion on the oven? Apart from, you could have built your own and buy a lot of beer and schweinsbraten for that money? :D

Blacksmithing tongs are heavy ,get one of this as i say .Mine is 25cm /10 inch long from EuroTools cost about 4-5 euro i think , more then enough long. They are intended for cutting so they have LOT of power on jaws , you will never drop and break just hardened blade :D
About oven , I like it .Evan 40 years ago they know that shielded HT elements is good thing in HT oven

The upper one in the picture has been reworked ,that with arrow is original so you can see why you need to do that ??

It's here and it works. I am happy as a small child. I am even tempted not to touch anything, although I recieved the PID and TC already.

HT elements are inclosed in the bottom and top of the oven (the ceramic rods at the side serve as braces for the top).

What's with the big hole at the back, is it there on purpose? I tried the oven at 800°C. It needed about 1 hour to get to 700°C (I opened frequently to check what is happening) and then it went quickly to 800°C, I hope it wouldn't need much more to reach 1050°C.

I guess it is well isolated because it was cold on touch, only later it became warm (but not hot) to touch. I annealed an old file and did a magnet test at 770°C.

I needed some time to realize that the red arrow is moving and showing the actual temp (it even dropped slightly after opening the oven).

All in all, massively built, good size and it works! Seems like they knew their stuff back in 1977 in W Germany and it was built to last.

I wouldn’t mess with the control system, and just use it as is. It’s amazing.

One word, my friend: cheap eBay induction forge! :D

Awesome

I will try the salt and brass melting test to judge the temp in the oven and if these work I will leave it be as it is.

Or, go to the Austrian equivalent of Harbor Freight and get a set of long handled needle nose pliers.

Stacy , my friend ......good luck holding steel with that pliers on right side  They are good for many things except for this purpose .You will never succeed to hold steel in line with that kind of pliers , never....:)
And problem is this .............they will hold steel only on edge in one point and steel will rotate whatever hard you press handles :D

On the ones with 90° the problem is much less exaggerated, no?

Cheaper also :) hole needs to be there?
Of course , you put hose on them and when time for quench come let the water run :p
HT oven are used for many things not just for HT steel .Seems they are two holes in line so they have some purpose for other task ...I would close rear one with ceramic wool and install somehow some glass on front one ...be able to observe what's going on inside is a good thing .
