I Broke My Knife

Ok well I have a cheap 10$ hardware store knife. Master Blades is the manufacture i guess. Anyway What I did was spray the thing with WD40 cuz the thing would barely open and it was all dirty and scratchy. Now it opens and closes smooth, but the backlock doesn't lock. It clicks open, but close when you put pressure on the back of the blade. I don't know if the little spring thing inside is broke, or if it's just too clean? Thinking it'll work again is i put some grease in the lock i put in 2 drops of 3in1 oil. Did i mess it up worse cuz it still doesn't work. I also have another knife from Pakistan (the broze one with the dark brown wood about 2 inch folding blade i'm sure you've all seen it before) and the lock worked perfectly until that WD40 came in. I didn't use 3in1 oil in this one though.

Any ideas?

it has been my observation in the past that when i did like you and sprayed a lube into the knife, it really played havic on the action.( closing, etc..) try to spray it again and if you have access to an aircompresser, blow out the wd-40 and see how that works. i have a benchmade axis-lock and it seems to work worse if i use lube on the pivot. hope this helps.
*probably just have dirt in the lock.

Could just be that you got some oil into the locking mechanism. They do need some friction in order to lock properly. Wash everything off with warm water, or even better yet a spray solvent such as Gun Scrubber. Then add a drop of oil right at the pivot.

Also, go get yourself a decent knife. :D

Spend a little more than $10 on a knife and you probably won't have these issues. Also try a better lube, like TufGlide which won't leave an oily mess that will attract lint and other dirt.

No, it's not "because you got oil into the lock" it's because the lock is poorly designed and made on this particular knife. a lockback that relies on only friction between the tang and lockbar is little more than a slipjoint. If you insist on continuing to use the knife remove any lubrication, and be very careful with it as it's still liable to close when you least expect it.

I've got an idea. :D

Check out these KA-BAR/Dozier Folders. $20 a pop for real quality in a tough, compact, light weight, sharp knife -- take your pick of blade style.

There's lots of good stuff out there. It's more reliable than hardware store cheapies, which means works better, lasts longer, and is safer.

The Ka-Bar Doziers are "tactical" in that they are one-handers with pocket clips. You might like to consider more traditional folders, like an Opinel or a Swiss Army Knife.

I have done this in the past, what really happens is when you spray WD in, it loosens all the crud and crap that has built up inside the machined (or not machined) :D in this case and puts the crud where you don't want it to be. the only real solution is to fill the knife with joy liquid or similar and work all parts well, the run very hot water inside and around parts to clean all this loosened stuff out, tap dry or use a hair dryer, let cool and put 1 drop of light weight oil in or around pivot. This should fix it.

I also recommend what Esav said.............. ;)

Robbie Roberson ;)
P.S. Careful when handling sharp soapy blades

Almost forgot about this thread I'm stuck with these crap knives because I'm not supposed to have good ones I guess parents won't let me buy them... ugh... I did make a nice lookin one out of plastic, wood, and sheet metal once

Thanks for your help I'll try some stuff out.

Ok, go get a money order for $25, send it to (pick a dealer), get a Dozier KaBar mailed to your door

buy a boxcutter and file it to a point. you can get them at any hardware or dollar store and youre parents won't know. just keep it under your pillow or in a cut-out book. or if you really want to hide it well, pour a little 3in1 in a ziplock bag and put the boxcutter in the bag and burry it somewhere. since boxcutters are so cheap, I'd recomend getting a few in case a couple get confiscated.
If you dont have a file, alot of dollar stores have them too, or you can get a better one from a hardware store. Remamber to get the long bladed box cutters and not the short bladed utility knife things. and no, im not a bozo

What possible use could that have? A boxcutter is just fine for cutting open boxes and such as it is. I see no real reason to modify it, and it is also not a suitable substitute for a decent knife. See buying, modifiying and hiding such an implement can only cause more problems for the guy.

GroovyGnome, a good knife doesn't need to be really expensive. You can easily find a very acceptable knife for under $50. A great exampl has already been mentioned in the KaBar Dozier folder for about $20. If your parents are fine with you buying cheap knives then I see no reason to be against better ones. If it is just a money issue then show them some cheaper good knives. Also try talking to them and showing them you are responsible. Buying a cheap POS an hiding it is not going to help your case at all.

Its better to have a cheap modified box-cutter confiscated than a good or even a bad knife. a box-cutter of medium to large size can be had for 1 dollar. thats less than even the cheapest regular sized knife.
