I don't know how you guys do it. Every idea or plan with this hobby is a 6 week lead time.

This weekend I have a day to play and free days don't come around often, but getting material on short notice is impossible.

I'm assuming you've already checked out pottery/ceramics supply places? A quick google search turned up like 20 places in Detroit; surely one of them must have some?

But yeah, I feel your pain. Right now I'm waiting on some materials before I can start the next step on a project. I try to pick things up well ahead of time, and get extra when I'm ordering something so I'll have it on hand for the next thing (as well as save on shipping).

In Detroit??? Seriously.

There are so many places I wouldn't be surprised if there were 50 or more.

Boiler and burner repair shops, pottery and ceramics shops, insulation dealers. wood stove dealers,

And, of course, there are the online suppliers that will deliver it to your door. High Temp Tools and Refractory is a good source for al forge building supplies.

many within 30-45 minutes:

I've been digging through those same links all week. You'd think it would be easy...

My best bet seems to have closed down out of all those that actually sell fire brick, and sell it to the public. I originally started with hightemptools, but he doesn't seem serious; more of a hobbyist type that doesn't answer emails and doesn't list a phone number. I guess thats how it goes though. 6-8 weeks, lol.

Morgan thermal ceramics

Makes them

Their website used to have a tool to find local distributors and retailers.

I can't find that tool now.

But go to their website, find the local office phone number and call.

ask for a list of their local stocking distributors for insulating fire-brick.

Charles at Atlas Knife Company will usually sell them to you. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1107591-Atlas-Mini-Forge-ready-to-ship-w-new-burner

I haven't ordered from HTT&R lately, but they have been good suppliers in the past.

I live in a city much smaller than Detroit and I can get firebrick from several suppliers. A boiler repair company, one of the building supply companies, and most pottery shops carries them. I know Home depot still carries the hard firebrick.

Be sure to ask for "Insulating Fire bricks" and use "soft firebrick" as a descriptive term.

these folks certainly carry them:

Wayne is probably busy trying to get ready for Blade this weekend. Yeah, he does take a while to respond to e-mails but he has what you want.

There is a nice store in Grand Rapids, if you don't mind some driving time.

I found some hard fire brick in my area at a spa and fireplace store.

I bet Wayne at HTT is getting ready for the Blade Show this weekend. I'd try mailing him again, is a nice guy to buy from.

Industrial FirebrickCorp. here in Grand Rapids has it in stock all the time. If you come over here to the west side at all stop buy and pick some up. You might call them and see if they ever deliver to your area and see if you can prepay for some bricks and you may be able to have them deliver it to one of their east side customer for you to pick it up.

here is their number 616-363-0807

Way back when, fireplaces were lined with refractory brick because they were expected to burn coal.

Companies that repair such fireplaces have refractory brick.

Fireplace fire-brick and "Insulating fire-brick" are different things

It's immediately obvious if you have one in each hand.

I've only had kiln and pottery supply places have it or know what it is, bricklayers and their suppliers don't have the experience with it.

The insulating ones, you can carve with a teaspoon.

You folks are all awesome. You jump right in to help no matter the question or lack of patience, or whatever.

I have about 600 insulating soft firebrick and would be willing to part with a few if you would want to pay the freight. Send me an email weststevenr@yahoo.com. These are used - they are for a big project I have planned, but I can spare some.

Yup. The fireplace in my old house was built in 1912. The bricks lining the firebox were soft and yellow - refractory brick. Said so imprinted on the sides. One of the stores in the linked listing says it sells refractory brick. If they don't, shame on them.

Masonry supply is who sells it in our area.
Good luck, Fred

Gee, Detroit?

A local Brick & Stone yard has firebrick, including insulating FB.

Doesn't USPS have $16 if-it-fits-it-ships boxes? ;)

I had to make run for work today, so I tried to locate a place along my travel, and came up disappointed. But, yes I will have some shipped.

Steveweat: thank you for the offer, but I'm not in an emergency or anything; I just waited until the last minute and shame on me.

I got my copper, nickel silver and piece of O1 today. Why not get everything together. I guess I still have plenty to mess with though. I'm going to try to get 3 small blades out of my 2" x 5/16" x 18" piece of O1.
