I could use a few more hits -- on my website, that is. Or how to get a free 15" AK.

Beoram, look's very good! You are awesome with computers! I wish I had some way to learn how to be great with them too!:( :)

Thanks Skag. It's more 'necessity is the mother of invention' than knowing very much about HTML coding.

Actually - it's fairly easy to do some basic web-page stuff. Obviously in the new site design I had to resort to some manual coding for the resolution muddle. But I would highly recommend NetScape Composer (it comes bundled with the general Netscape download, which is FREE). One can design a webpage basically just like a Word Processing document. One makes tables, aligns text (right, left, centre justify), inserts photos. The main difference is that one can also put in 'hot-links', the clickable links. But Netscape makes it easy to do that. So if you, or anyone else, wants to do some easy web-page design, I'd recommend Netscape - it's quite simple. You never need look at the 'raw' HTML code, you can just look at the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get, more jargon) version - just how it will look onilne.

cheers, B.

Beo,

No, I wouldn't know the picture was doctored, at the least at the resolution on the page. But like I said, keeping it's not my decision.

(Hey! "Shite" flies past the censor.)

To my eye, looks ready to fly otherwise, once you iron out the annoying resolution stuff. The final polish on a script or program can be quite the pain. Change as little as you can manage. Figuring out how to write an awk script or get an X server to work is quite enough computer stuff for me. Working with "user friendly" stuff that almost does what you want but you don't know why makes me crazy. As does MS Windows.

Anyway, here's something from "The Devil's Dictionary" by Ambrose Bierce to inspire you:

Achievement: The death of endeavor and the birth of disgust.

Cheers.

Thanks for the Ambrose Bierce quote - I've always enjoyed his 'The Devil's Dictionary' (it used to be online, but that site went down, or at least it was last I checked) - didn't rememeber this particular entry though - very apt, I must say.

The resolution stuff should be fixed now, I'll repeat the link to the new, 800x600-friendly site:

HIMALAYAN IMPORTS NEW FRONTPAGE - VERSION 53,387.9: <br>Image-resizing Edition (800x600 should be better now)

cheers all, B.

anyone here about the algorithms and gyrations Ben must have gone through to achieve this, but when he gets his 15" AK, it should be nicely carved, with silver and goodies :D

thanks Walosi :D hopefully most people are finding it works (better at least) at different resolutions.

Uncle Bill - I tried, but I couldn't get into the right place to put the page up. I've signed out of the HIMIMP AOL now--in case you're on the forum to see this:--and sent you e-mail.

Does anyone here using AOL as a web-page host? That is, anyone else have an AOL webpage/homepage? Uncle Bill & I are trying to figure out how to get the new page set up and I can't seem to figure out how to get AOL to do what I want. (this is part of why I don't like AOL -- all I want to do is to send some files to a particular location - that's all, nothing else - I don't want to use their editing software or have tips on web-page designing - I just want to put the new index.html file and the image files into the proper place on the HI AOL account. I tried doing FTP, but it doesn't seem to let me access the files in the HIMIMP folder as a guest, which is the only way I can sign in (or anyone, even an AOL member, can sign in).

Hopefully there must be someone else here who has a page on AOL and can tell me simply how to take a .html file and some jpegs & gifs and put them into an AOL webpage account.

thanks, B.

Sorry Ben:

I've got AOL on my home PC, but wouldn't dream of putting a site on it.

I use it only to test connectivity to our corporate sites.

Bro I agree wholeheartedly!!!!!!!!! Very nice Ben!!!!!!

I see what you mean about the 800 x 600 format, but it's much easier to get around for me and I'm sure others will appreciate your efforts as well.
When I was still running my WebTV I used to have the same problem with Terry Sisco's Sarki Website in that it overfilled the page. I don't recall if Walosi had the same problem or not?

As to AOL, my son in law just finished his Associate's degree in building computers and he and my daughter are on AOL, didn't know better in the beginning I guess.;)

This is Dallas's e-mail address. TexD63@aol.com
You can write him if you want to see where he's got his website through.
I'm pretty certain he still has one, but like some others I lost it when I moved to the computer.
He may not recognize my ndn name even though he knows it so just tell him that Yvsa, his father in law in Oklahoma sent you.
Dallas may be of some good help.
And Dallas is another one of the good guys and won't mind any
e-mail.

...and don't tell me about any typos, errors, &c. now!!

getting it up on aol took much longer than it should have done, about 2.5 hours! It would almost have been faster to save it onto a floppy, drive to the nearest AOL provider hub, sneak onto one of their computers and put the disk in and copy the files off. That's essentially all I was trying to do, copy file from one computer to another. So, my advice is, if you have any plans for putting up a webpage, don't use AOL....

in any case, voila, here it is:

New HI Site

so, if you click on your HI bookmarks, this is what you'll see now. it's unfortunately a bit slower on the AOL than it was on my Uni. server, which is silly since the total size of all of the files put together is about 250k, about 1/5th of what one of the old 3.5in floppy disks holds!!!

I hope it works pretty well for those at 800x600 - I did the best I could with the resolution tangle. The only way to have it perfect at each resolution would be to make a separate page for each resolution....

anyway, hope everyone likes it.

cheers, B.

I think you may have a little fine tuning to do, Beo. Using Netscape 6 it get's hung up on "connecting to ss.webring.com. Total load time 222 seconds and it's missing about half the pix.

AOL opens the page pretty quick but takes a long time to load the pix.

I don't know what can be done to speed it up.

But it looks good when all the stuff gets loaded.

I'm trying to figure out all the counter stats!!!!

Thanks again for great help.

I would be happy to do fine tuning, but I'm afraid that's not really the problem. The problem is AOL.

Try this, here's the page on AOL:

New HI site on AOL

here's the identical page on my server:

New HI Site on vonneumann.cog.jhu.edu

The HTML code, the images--everything is exactly the same. Down to the last comma!

It takes me about 1 min to load in the AOL site on Explorer and about the same on Netscape -- sometimes Netscape stalls on the ss.webring.com (but only on the AOL site), sometimes not.

It takes me about 5 seconds to load the page in with either Explorer or Netscape on the cogsci.jhu.edu site!!

So the problem is really AOL - there's little I can do about that....I can maybe fix about something with the ss.webring.com thing on Netscape by just using an image instead of the nav-bar (being the RingMaster I can make these sorts of decisions ;) ).

You might consider getting a server on a new site. We could make a 'redirect' page at the AOL address, so no-one going to the old site would be lost. And you could keep your AOL email, &c.

Are you paying a 'commercial' rate to AOL for hosting your site? If not, there are plenty of FREE hosts, like yahoo, &c. which would probably not have the same loading problems as the AOL one does.

Maybe someone on the forum can recommend a good free webpage hoster???

If you're paying commercial rate, I know of a very good host (actually physically located in Pennsylvania, but you can make a page on it from anywhere), which has very low rates. Even if your AOL page is free, I imagine your Andale site isn't. You could in theory get a cheaper commercial host and put all of the stuff now on Andale there (we could even steal the HTML code from Andale more or less so it'll look basically the same).

I dunno - is Andale doing anything in particular for you?

I'm just not sure what to do about AOL - the total file size of everything that's loading up is only about 300K - which is incredibly small!! So there's no reason why it should take so long and you can see that the exact same code doesn't take even 10second on my Uni. server.

hopefully we can figure something out.

cheers, B.

Ah, don't worry too much about it one way or another. :)

I'll do some checking into web-servers; I think that's the real solution, since AOL had problems with the old page too.

B.

Dear Uncle Bill et al -

Trying out some of these free hosting servers. The first one I hit is Netfirms.com. For free, you get 25 MB Webspace (v. 2MG at AOL). There is a pop-up ad which appears when you first open it; but it's easy to close, and there's a banner at the top of the page. For $5/month you can get rid of these.

But I registered with a cool name too -- so here's the site hosted at Netfirms:

http://khukuri.netfirms.com

It took me 10 minutes total to put up the site!!! This includes the time it took me to register! Versus 3 hours for setting up AOL.

I seem to get everything loaded up in 10seconds, which is pretty good (especially compared to 2 minutes+ on AOL!)

I'm going to check out a few other ones; but this one seems quite good.

As I said before I can easily make you a 'Redirect Page' for AOL, so that old customers & old links will end up at the new page with no problems! And you can keep your same email, &c.

I'm going to look in some other hosts....but what do people think of this one??

feeling much better about this web stuff with khukuri.netfirms.com :)

Ben here you go. It's the best I could find tonight. :)

Enjoy your smoke.

I will join you in spirit if not in fact. I can happily say I have been off all forms of tobacco since Nov 15th 2,001, my choice.

Thanks Yvsa - I think I shall ;)

I want to stop smoking myself - sometime. I don't want to say or try to do it until I'm ready to, I think people just fool themselves unless they're really ready to quit.

But I'm not quite yet.....
