I couldn't stitch this one up myself (warning gore pix)

Jack, Glad you're alive and well! Here's what the military is using now - and you can administer the bandage with one arm and hand:

And available here:

OFA Gear sent us some to experiement with at the CT Gathering, and sent me some ahead of time. The demo video really brings home the usefulness of this:

Glad your alright ,in the bush no Glass ,but if you did sustain a injury like that ,Infection would be the key, since it is a big slice and nothing major was hit, bleeding out is not a factor...."Oh yes there will be blood" but no Gushers....keep a cool head and thinking is key....it gonna be sore, get well bro

Two words for you:

tempered glass.

I got paranoid a few years back when I saw a kid in the ER who ran into a old glass door. Same kind of door I had in my house, and yours, it looks like. Poor thing nearly bled to death. My kids were about the same age at the time. Had the glass replaced within a week.

Yuck!

Glad to know there's no permanent damage!

Looks like the only knife fight I ever witnessed! Nasty...

While you are recuperating from that, start making-up a cool story to go with those scars.

I'm sure that you'll be able to pick-up plenty of Goth chicks if they think you're a 'cutter'!

Got the artery and some muscle but no tendons, thank god. I kept my composure and held my own brachial until the medics got there.
Partner, with all due respect, you didn't get the artery or it would be shooting across the room while that photo was being taken. Also, there isn't an artery that close to the surface. The artery is below the level of the tendons. And if you had severed the artery, they would have had to graft it.

Glad it worked out for you, though. Get well soon.

(lanacaine?)
Lidocaine is the word you are looking for.

Come on! That's merely a "flesh wound"...
Actually, it is merely a flesh wound. Large but not really deep. Because he perforated the fascia, he got to see the muscle, but he should heal up pretty well and have no adverse effects.

Just wondering, have any pics after wound the post-suturing.

That is horrible. Glad you had your radio and your wife to call. How bout some pics of the stitches. Take care.

OUCH!!! That's sure a good clean cut though!

I don't like when my inside bits turn in to my outside bits...makes me feel a little ill. I have never opened up any big parts way in the bush myself...stuck an axe in my leg while felling a tree one time a couple of years ago but could have been at a hospital in under an hour if I were concerned about it...took us a couple of hours to find a doctor to patch me up.

I guess if you were way in the backcountry you'd just use pressure to stop the bleeding, for however long that took, and then pack it with some gauze and go home. I think ideally I would like to get the sides to be pretty close together without actually closing the thing up and I think that could be acheived with gauze and tape. That way (I believe, I have no medical training at all) it would probably heal faster from secondary intention than if it were wide open, but still drain if it got infected. Also keeping it covered would probably be good, to limit contamination.

But as I say I have no medical training at all, I run off 100% instinct in medical emergencies!

Anyway sure makes your old home surgery thread look pale by comparison eh? Glad you are okay and good that you were able to get help so fast.

OK, so heres the plan: Contact the bike company and give them a picture of the broken components. Include a picture of the arm. No threats or explanations, other than the longevity and circumstance of the bike's failure. You should have a new bike (possibly with upgrades) in no time! :D

I was pissed at my mountain bike. I didn't punch the door, but I smacked it going out and my hand went straight through. Definetly acting like a "real man". lol Maybe I'll learn one day.

Oof! I've been there ... but with results far less spectacular. Hoping you heal without any complications.

On the positive side, think of the 'cool scars' you'll get! Now, you only have to come up with an equally cool story ...

Maybe Mongo can help. :)

whiskey
super glue
whiskey
duct tape
and more whiskey

Glad everything worked out (apart from the bike),
take it easy and stay safe.

WOW man. I took a look at those pics and was amazed o_O I'm glad you could maintain your composure, I hope we all have that clear presence of mind. Hope you heal well.
Eric

Looks like the mountain bike won this round. Had a friend do the sme through a bank window a long time ago. We had to hitchhike 20 plus miles to the hospital. County mounty wound up giving us a ride. Glass is some realy nasty stuff to come in contact with.

man...you're lucky you didn't cut any of your tendons. I had a buddy who did the same thing you did only he sliced up 3 tendons in his arm. Five yrs. later his arm is still not the same. good to hear you're ok and get better soon.

yeah, the bush would be worse because it would be splinters or rock or something. Not nearly as clean.

I'm thinking something about a crazy structure fire rescue.

With all due respect in return, the bright red arterial blood accumulating to a few pints blood loss and the surgeon saying "you Knicked your artery on the ulna side", I'm fairly certain I did. Just for the heck of it, the def of an artery is simply a vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart, with the one exception being the pulmonary artery which carries non-oxygenated blood to the lungs. Luckily no, I did not hit my artery on the strong radial side or higher up and get my brachial. as far as the arteries proximity to the surface, maybe it comes further down the wrist than you're seeing, you're clearly some sort of medical professional. I take no offense, but I will defend my big fish story. I did go WELL below tendons, I just got lucky as hell and didn't get them. They had an O.R. and a team reserved until the surgeon actually went through it and told me how lucky I was. I will post some post stitch pics tues sometime.

edit: correct me if I'm wrong, but I do honestly think what you're not getting is the depth of the laceration. It was pure luck I didn't get the tendons. Anyway, don't take my response as smartass, *cough*painkillers*cough*, you sound like you know more than me, I'm just a basic EMT.

Sometimes I think Vets are better than MD's. Plus... I know mongo's blades will be sharp.

good grief that would really be a pain in the ass. So what was the take? from the bank I mean? surely you continued with your "withdrawl" before going to the ER.
