I couldn't stitch this one up myself (warning gore pix)

wow - that's something else! glad you're going to be ok! that's some cut - just opened up your arm. reminds me of the Terminator movie when Arnold repairs his arm.

the hell would you do if this happened in the bush?

Anyway, I'm fine. accidentally put my hand through some glass. Got the artery and some muscle but no tendons, thank god. I kept my composure and held my own biracial until the medics got there.

on a side note, I felt amazing yesterday afternoon. And not just because of the pain killers. Being a Firefighter, I had LEO, FD, and medics all at my house in no time. Medics actually logged response time was :03. lol 3 seconds. they rolled when I got on the radio to call it in. It felt amazing to have so many people care enough to come to your aid. I felt bad, some of my boys looked pretty rough seeing me in that shape.

Glad everything turned out alright for you:thumbup:
That's a helluva gash!!:eek:Worse than I ever had
As far as your question goes..If it was me,I'd try & clean it up the best I could, then wrap it up as tight as I could stand it with gauze or a cloth & seek med assistance ASAP!What else could you do?

One of my most serious cuts came from glass as well. I was leaning across the couch pulling the window shade and lost my balance. I put my arm right through the glass. I was only a few minutes from the clinic so I just wrapped a towel around it and headed over there. However mine just took about ten stitches.

I dunno. I know that tourniquets are last resort. Life or limb. I do know that within 5 minutes I was losing consciousness. So this might be one of those situations in the bush where you'd sacrifice the arm.

With all due respect in return, the bright red arterial blood accumulating to a few pints blood loss and the surgeon saying "you Knicked your artery on the ulna side", I'm fairly certain I did. Just for the heck of it, the def of an artery is simply a vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart, with the one exception being the pulmonary artery which carries non-oxygenated blood to the lungs. Luckily no, I did not hit my artery on the strong radial side or higher up and get my brachial. as far as the arteries proximity to the surface, maybe it comes further down the wrist than you're seeing, you're clearly some sort of medical professional. I take no offense, but I will defend my big fish story. I did go WELL below tendons, I just got lucky as hell and didn't get them. They had an O.R. and a team reserved until the surgeon actually went through it and told me how lucky I was. I will post some post stitch pics tues sometime.

Superficial arterioles severed or nicked maybe. But you will know when you sever and artery. It will shoot blood all the way across the bus or ER treatment room when you lose direct pressure on the thing.

It's still a pretty big fish story and you have the pics to prove it.

Damn!! 5 minutes!Yea I say you'd be screwed:eek:

BTW,I wasn't referring to a tourniquet.I was talking about wrapping the wound itself & applying pressure, without cutting off the blood supply.Either way,if you were out in the middle of nowhere, you'd probably lost your arm at the least.

Get well soon:)

yup. anyway, what I wonder about is the larger veins. well I guess they're viens, I don't know. I'm a muscular guy, and I maintain a fairly low body fat. So I have very veiny forearms and I know those big rope looking guys got cut. do they just reroute themselves or what? Get my question?

what really sucks is when this hospital bill comes in, it will put a nice hold on my knife budget. Oh well, I have plenty of toys already. Although I was really getting close to ordering a spyerco mil.

Man, that is one gnarly gash, glad you are OK! I posted a while back about CELOX, and in the interest of furthering my education, and since there seems to be a few medical pros on this thread, would it's use have been indicated here, assuming you had it and response time was an issue?

Edited to add - I did get pissed at my mountain bike once and threw it into the woods, but you got me beat by a long shot!

Good luck on the healing process, I got a cut in the same location in '91, mine only had 55 stitches though. That place was extremely sensitive for 5-6 years and now all I notice is that pretty scar.

I don't think I had more than than. I'll have to count again.

I would agree, I severed an artery in my leg while unwisley using my HI Khukri to split wood while wearing shorts and sandals. EVERY step I took from the yard to the porch to the kitchen blood shot out for a few feet and thick. I never felt the cut(my superb sharpening skills) but I felt the thump and saw the squirt. Luckily my retired army mother/father and eaglescout cousin where there and just acted...cuz I ended up going into shock.

Jack, I have a bro who put his arms through a glass door and his looked JUST like yours but with both arms. Didnt bleed alot but god was it scary looking. Took 64 stiches in one arm and 53 in another.....Glad your ok. Oh and they do leave badass wounds.

In the woods I would hope to get it covered and get out of there if I could asap. I did cut my other leg with a FBM while working in the woods, but a tractor and adrenaline got me to the hospitol.....I am accident prone.

Barrabas74, if you haven't yet done so, you ought to post the story of your leg artery cut on the Himalayan Imports forum somewhere.

(And people will be asking you which model it was--and which kami forged it.)

(I can just see it: "Yeah, your Kumar M-43 sure took a nice chunk out of your tibia--but here are the pics of where I cut off my medulla oblongata with a Bura 18" chiruwa ang khola, while I was chopping some firewood. If your M-43 had had a better heat treat, you would have had to stitch your leg back on with paracord.")

Bleahhhh!
Hope you have a speedy recovery dude.

Reminds me of a time when i was about 12.
I was taking swimming lessons at the local indoor pool.
I was in the lobby waiting for my ride and there were a bunch of teenagers hanging around out by the twin glass double doors.
They were tapping on the glass and taunting one of the lifeguards to do something about it. well after a few minutes one of the lifeguards had had enough.
He ran past me (wearing only swimming trunks) and ran towards the doors.
I looked away for a second then i hear a big CRASH! Next thing i see the lifeguard walking towards me looking shocked and pale saying calmly "i'm bleeding i'm bleeding".
He had just managed to somehow shatter the glass door with his naked leg.
And of course he had a couple of hundred slashes on his left leg. With each step more blood was pulsing out of each of those cuts (some of the cuts were very deep).
He slowly walked towards the main desk and the other lifeguard rushed out to help him.
They called an ambulance and then found a first aid kit and started wrapping up his leg to try to slow the blood flow.
Eventually an ambulance arrived.
I always remember the blood squirting/pulsing , the look of pale shock and the bloody one-footed foot trail he made across the concrete floor.
