I DID IT!!!!!! I DID IT! Laminated steel, FINALLY a successful COMPLETE weld! I started with 1 inch wide 1/4 inch thick mild steel and 1075, and laminated the 1075 successfully between them! NO GAPS, NO COLD SHUTS, NO INCLUSIONS, a complete and utter solid weld.I'll have some pictures when I can get it etched up, WHEW, i am exhausted.

Congrats! That first solid, full forge weld is a great feeling. Now, get some 15n20 or something and get to work!

Thanks guys, it was exhilerating!!!!! I went to take some tonight, but the camera is out of batteries, so tommorrow it is.. I am torn now wether to keep the bar for posterity, keep forging it into a tanto, or forge it into a european style blade. A euro style knife would be cool, with a fuller milled in so you would see 1075 in the fuller, and all along the edges. But also, a semi traditional tanto would be pretty cool too! Pretty soon hopefully as well I will be trying some twisty style damascus as well, with 2 performance steels, probably 5160 and 1075, or maybe some 5160 and 1095, or whatever other steels I can get my hands on.

I read the thread and he says that the air for the forge is also generated by the water flow. Great.

Oh no.....put down the billet Sam before it bites you  Once that damascus bug sinks it's teeth in you there's no quitting. :D

Congrat's man!

Congrats Sam!

Now... you know better than just to tell....we are blade, material porn addicts and WE WANNA SEE:D

Now i figured out how i can finally post pictures, here is some of the little finished billet. No folds, no twists, just laminated. The dark strip in the center is the 1075, lighter shinier outer layers is the mild.

Welcome to the club! next thing you know you'll be a damascus addict like me.

My name is Page and I'm a layeraholic ;D

Remember alcoholics go to meetings, damascaholics go to Ashokan

Once again, congrats. Now, if someone could explain to me how you get those full size pictures!

Nice. mild steel is a bit harder to forge weld than all high carbon. Now that you know what to look for and how it "feels" it'll be a lot easier for the next one. It's a great feeling ain't it?:D

Thanks guys! Page, it is immensely hard work, even this simple little billet, but you are right i am HOOKED. Scott, i upload my pictures to my myspace profile and use it as a server, then just do the IMG URL thing. Will, people keep saying mild is harder, if all carbon is easier i cannot WAIT to try some all carbon billets! I did this in a rivet forge using coal also!

Sam, now that you have the sickness, and Mace has the sickness at a much higher level, maybe we should see if we can organize an informal damascus thing at Ashokan, kind of like the informal new smiths teaching we did this year

Sam, I have a piece of 4140 for you -you can make your own hammers instead of buying them !
