I don't know how to sharpen knives

Reprofiling D2 with a sharpmaker?

How many strokes per side, 25,000?

The trick is to not become complacent and slip up on stroke 22,891 resulting in a giant scratch on your $300 knife because you were using cheap crock sticks lmao.

Well, I would do 10 strokes per side, then my workout. Don't know how many passes on the edge but I'm tired of pullups and pushups!

In my experience too many folks want to put a razor edge on their knife instead of a general purpose cutting edge. I think it takes a lot longer to do this. I like the 40 degree setting on the Sharpmaker for sharpening the micro edge on my knives as it seems to be a very good working edge angle for most of my knife cutting tasks. And it is easy to do as well, not taking tons of time. I have other tools with razor edges like my box cutter should I ever need that level of sharpness. Here is an interesting video discussing cutting edges that may be of interest.

I have never invested in a high end sharpening system though I have always wanted an edgepro system when I have extra money it always ends up going to a knife not a sharpener.

so I have tried a few of the cheaper clamp systems with varying degrees of success.

Have the Lansky and the DMT plastic aligner and also one of those $20 systems from ebay .

Heres what I have found. every knife I own or have owned has a different edge. whether its the angle or it has a main edge grind and then a micro bevel or the edge grinds are off or obtuse or whatever . Its never ending . so I avoided re-setting the edge bevel/grind/angle and tried like hell to get my knives razor sharp by staying with the original edge . Used the sharpie technique I would try and hit that angle with each system. sometimes it was close most times it was not. the edgepro copy from ebay was frustrating for a cpl reasons. there are no markings or notches on the angle adjustment rod. so though it is infinite in adjustment there is no way to really reproduce what you end up setting it at . I tried marking it with a marker or tape but if you have multiple knives with all different angles it becomes an excersize in insanity .

also those copy systems have no easy way to flip the knife over . when you are ready to move to the other side you have to unclamp the knife with an allen wrench flip the knife try to get it to the exact same depth and left/right position as you had it for the first side. That's one of the big problems with any clamp system. the way you clamp the knife in has a direct affect on where the stone hits the blade.

also the DMT is plastic and the angle guides are curved and flex. and if youre not careful you will bust off the little pins that lock the guides in place.

also the cheaper clamp systems can only accommodate a certain length and thickness of blade. and if you try to go to shallow the stones will hit the clamp tightener.

I have gotten to the point I cant keep track of all the different edge angles on all my knives. I hit the sweet spot on one and if I don't write it all down I can never duplicate what I did.

so my plan moving forward is to re-set all my edge angles and decide on one sharpening system for everything. will have to get some diamond stones to reset the edges and will have to do some research on blade thickness relative to edge angles. also need to decide if I want to go with micro bevels or just one edge grind. the sharpy technique can help but if you have micro bevels it doubles the complexity .

I have always wanted mirror polished edge grinds but sharpening is a very complex skill that takes time and commitment to achieve success in. read as much as you can find on the subject and then back up and go the simplest route you can. also decide what level of sharpness you will be happy with or need and get good stones that will get you there and be done with it.

so I would decide to either go free hand sharpening or get the sharpmaker so as to keep things simple or save up and get a good system that doesn't have the huge flaws of the cheaper systems.

A tip I learned was to mark the edge of the blade with a Sharpie marker so that as you are sharpening...you can see if you are at the right angle....and for me...small circles on the stone work best...I can get shaving sharp by taking my time.

Oh man this is taking forever, but at least I'm getting in a pretty decent workout.
I probably need some Diamond rods. I put it thread in the want to buy section but I don't know if it gets very much traffic

You can get an AGPtek system for less than $30. It comes with 4 stones and works just like the edge pro apex. Even accepts edge pro stones.

O.B.
I have heard of people doing this, how different does it feel from the Edge Pro and is it as easy to use? No rigging it up such as clamp wise for certain knives and certain angles? At least not anymore than the Edge Pro needs lol

Thanks

Thanks

It works the same.
