I don't see nearly enough pics of Nick Wheeler knives....

I like what Nick did here. Anyway, Nick made me a hunter a few months ago so I know firsthand that he's a perfectionist. I love the knife.

I'm the same way, but I do like to take them in my hand, and I hate it when a flush handle develop that nasty little sharp edge.

Natural Materials

Ive got a Massey Hunter done in sheeps horn mortised construction..there are days when i go for her and you can easily feel the "seam" others when she is unnoticable..Fit and finish are as good as they come but there are days eh.
Nick that is as striking a knife as I've seen

Thanks again for the kind words everyone.

RWS, I wasn't trying to start anything negative here. But I thought you were implying that this knife's f&f was sloppy, and that bothered me. Simply not liking the style is altogehter different. Of course you are welcome to your personal likes and dislikes. God help us if were were not. I hope you do not think I was bashing your preferences.

The misconception I was trying to erase is that this knife or any of my knives do not fit together well. I will admit that it's difficult to see it in this picture, that it almost looks like the pommel is just smaller and that there is a "ledge" between it and the Oosic.

But the pommel is exactly 0.0010" small in diameter than the Oosci. Then the Oosic is sanded so that at the very point where it meets the pommel it is the same diameter. That "ledge" actually has a tiny radius to it allowing the Oosic to "flow" into the pommel. I think a different angled picture would show this better.

Hey, I realize that in the end not everyone will like what I do, and I really can accept that :) lol

I am just so meticulous about fit and finish that it really caught me wrong when I first read the post.

Thanks again everyone,
Nick

Here's a pic of a Cashen mini bowie, with the described fitting of the wood. On this knife, it definitely works, IMHO. I like never having to worry about the wood shrinking.

Nick, you have earned a great reputation for making gorgeous knives and it is well deserved.
In fact, your Bowies are some of the nicest looking Bowies out there in the custom arena, IMO.

FWIW, I am fortunate enough to own a Bowie and the stag damascus hunter (pictured in this thread) by Nick. His workmanship, fit and finish are frankly second to none. Pictures can never tell the whole story about a knife. The acid test is when it is actually in your hand, unfortunately Nick's meticulous (read absurd) attention to detail means that it is hard to actually find and put your hands on his work. If you ever have the opportunity to fondle his work, don't miss it.

This is probaly the best Wheeler that I have seen. I believe this one won an award.

Wow, the last knife pictured by Dylan is awfully nice.

If you have ever seen a Scott Cook hunter with "shrunken" wood handles, same idea, make the fit so UNflush that it gives the area a whole new look, and with the benefit of not slowly seeing your fit and finish detereorate as materials shrink, i like things to fit flush, but realize life isnt perfect and what was once flush, isnt anymore, and its nice to see makers trying things to address this issue.

I have only one of Nicks, and am very fond of it. 9" fighter with ironwood.

They're all nice but I like the last one posted by Dylan the best. I love that little ridged ring detail! :)

FWIW, I think the pommel reveal idea is pretty cool. It would also be neat to see the rearward portion of the handle step down several times to the end.....

After re-reading some of the very poorly worded posts I made in this thread about my preferences for handle fittings, I feel I want to apologize to Nick again for how this came across.

If everyone knew how much I like Nick's gorgeous knives I wouldn't rehash this and I would have dropped it.
This thread needs to continue with more awesome pictures of Nick's stuff.
Now, I'll drop it.

Wow, that one posted by Dylan is my favorite...along with the stag hunter...along with the hunter below the stag....

Order one. Nick will gladly make one for you. Now, how long you might have to wait is another story. :)

Dylan,
Thanks for posting my pic... Yup, he won two awards with that one!

I also dug out a pic posted by someone else - it's a piece I really like and may try to talk Nick into doing again... maybe! :D

Thanks for the pic Joe. I think Nick's hunters are as nice as you will find anywhere at any price. I have no doubt that you could twist his arm to make you one. :)

Here's another:

I too am fortunate enough to own one of Nick's beautiful hunters and I can honestly say the fit, finish feel and style is amazing but just as impressive is the quality and attention to detail he puts in his sheaths, just beautiful., Dave

And, here's a crappy picture of a wicked Warncliffe knife Nick made for me. This picture is not clear enough to really make out the very vivid Hamon in the W1 blade.
