Personally I'd put a real handle on it. Cord wraps' one advantage to me is storing an emergency source of cordage. Short of that or just using a single layer on a very flat knife, I'd want actual scales.

+1 on that. Making a set would not be to hard for a man of your abilities
 
Careful with the Spray on polyurethane. I put some on a carved walking stick I have, and though it looks great, it gets a bit sticky when a little damp.
 
Like FortyTwo said; cord is fun for pretend survival shenanigans but real scales are the way to go IMHO as well; even if you make your own. :thumbup::cool:
 
The hardened cordage is about as grippy as you can get. As long as you have adequate anchoring holes and the proximity between the holes and the stopping point is right, an epoxied, knotted style wrap is going to do the trick, trust me.
 
I ordered some frag grips just in case I don't like the hardened 550.

Just speaking for myself, grippiness isn't my typical concern with cord wraps. It's comfort. :)
