I ended up in the hospital

Wow, I hope you get better soon! I had to read all about MRSA...did not know much about it...

Now I have a newfound respect for maggots. Who'da thought?

Sad to hear that. MRSA is a nasty bug. The Staphylococcus aureus is a "normal" part of the skin flora. It's the cause of pimples but when your body can't suppress it enough or you meet a resistent strain you are in trouble.
I would highly recommend the maggot treatment.
Although the fact that something is eating your flesh away is horrendous those little maggots only eat the dead or decaying flesh, and not the healthy flesh.
So does KMN04 but that would be cheap and simple.

You need to go back to Mr." doctor" NoSpiderBitey when you're better and make feather sticks out of his thumb.

Although the fact that something is eating your flesh away is horrendous those little maggots only eat the dead or decaying flesh, and not the healthy flesh. The maggots are contained in a pouch that is placed inside the wound and they will do a fantastic debrisment of the wound. When they are done, the pouch is thrown away and a new pouch is placed in or on the wound.
You will not see the maggots crawling around but might feel them a little. The treatment is painless, and it is better then a surgical treatment, because a surgeon will need to cut away a much larger portion of tissue to be certain all affected tissue is gone.
So if you can place yourself over the fact that you know a local "clean team" is working in debriment of your wound the maggot therapy is great.
You see a lot of doctors going back to old school treatments for wounds like the use of honey in wounds ( effective against MRSA before a mayor onset), and the use of maggots.
This is because doctors have been subscribing antibiotics by the pounds in the past for every small illness, making the "normal" bugs resistent and turning them in superbugs.
I always use Silver sulfadiazine cream when treating cuts, abbrasions, etc.
These are considered "old school " but it's still used to treat burn wounds.
I have a big jar of "flamazine" in my fridge and every wound me or my family member have is treated with it. It is beeing rediscovered as effective against external MRSA infections

Silver sulfadiazine is some fantastic stuff. It really helps with burns as well.

Where can you get the stuff, Joe? I went to my local Rite-Aid, and they never heard of it.
I find it online; it's harder to find than it used to be, for some reason. It's also sold under the name Thermazene or as SSD cream. The 50g containers are nice to throw in your kit, just in case.

It's best to be sure you don't react badly to sulfa drugs, though. You might actually make a bad situation worse.

- Thanks!

My dad had a few old tubes of the stuff that he used for road rash from high speed bike, cross country skiing, speedskating etc crashes. Keeps the scabbing soft and pliable so it doesn't crack and ooze and makes life alot more bearable when 20% of your body is covered with scabbing. Wound up using most of it when I landed on my face at 25mph

Hey Master Q do keep us posted on how are you doing...

Sure ‘nuff Sasha...

As quick as I was in the hospital on Friday I was out on Sunday. Here's how it shook out: Infectious Disease Doc #1 (who put me in the hospital) had prescribed one of the standard MRSA treatments: intravenous vancomycin. However, vancomycin must be given intravenously (IV) for systemic therapy, since it does not cross through the intestinal lining. Translation: vancomycin can’t be taken orally which means ya gotta be in the hospital to have it pumped into ya...or ya gotta take an IV home which is apparently not a very attractive option to healthcare professionals. So When Infectious Disease Doc #2 took over on Hospital Day #2 he said he was switching me to IV Zyvox which (he said) also comes in a pill form so I could go home as soon as improvement became evident and could continue home antibiotic therapy with the oral Zyvox. So I got sended home on Sunday night Bro. The Zyvox is prescribed for ten (10) days, two (2) pills per day. Now everyone knows that 2 times ten is 20, but I bet not a lot of youze guys know what 20 Zyvox pills costs. $200.00? Nope. $400.00? Nope. 800.00? Nope. $1,000.00? Nope. $1,200.00? Nope. $1,400.00? Nope. $1,500.00 and freakin change fellas  ...and that includes the insurance company’s discount! No lie.

Sheesh...I’m glad I got good insurance.

The wound stopped growing and it is healing nicely. The beefy redness is turning lighter and it is starting to itch like nuts. It looks (and I feel) a heckuva lot better.

So it seems at this point in time that all is on the mend.

Q out.

Dude hope you get better soon!

Scary cost there! If you don't mind me asking how money are you actually out for the meds?

Thanks fellas. I can tell you that there is a significant upside to what has happened over the past week and a half: When I first started feeling under the weather, Mrs. Q accused me of malingering...of exaggerating, after which the severity of my affliction came to light. As a result she now feels very guilty. I had a home cooked steak dinner last night. :D
