I fought and i”ve won the battle of the bulge

Mike, there's really not a lot more I can add about my diet, except that it's not a Diet, it's an Eating Plan.
It's a plan to live healthier and longer. In my previous posts here I've explained exactly how I follow it.

I do think reading Dr. Fuhrman's books or watching his videos will explain all of the why's and wherefores of his program, but I don't think you need to know the chemical breakdown of an egg to make an omelet. You have enough information from what's written here, you just need to apply it.

Do you know what I find funny?
When people find out about my weight loss usually the first thing I hear is (mostly from women) , "I'm So Jealous!"
I tell them, "You don't have to be jealous, here's exactly what I did and what I eat...It was Easy!"
Usually what I hear back is, "Oh."
They're no longer jealous, they're more disappointed.

I'm not sure if they expected the answer to be easier or harder. It just is what it is, and I know that it works.
It works when nothing else worked for me.

How do I know it works?
Because I've lost 8 pounds so far this week and I expect to lose 2 more by Monday. 8^)
Then 10 more pounds in December and 15 to 20 pounds by next Summer.
Then I expect to keep eating as I'm eating right now for the rest of my life.

Great thread, Mr. Phil. I'm doing Weight Watchers, and your diet is very low in "points", as most fruit and veg is zero points. What you say makes a great deal of sense both nutritionally and in terms of weight loss. Our bodies were not designed to eat Cheetos and be sedentary, so its no wonder that we get fat.

Powernoodle, much success with Weight Watchers. I've had many family members have great success with WW. So, although I've never been on WW, I know it works.

On 'Eat To Live' I don't count 'points' 'calories' look at portion control or any other restrictions.
I eat as much of G.B.O.M.B.S. as I can and as little as possible of everything else.
Some may see it as more restrictive, I find it to be simpler.

I guess it comes down to whatever floats your boat.
As long as a person is aware that there are alternatives and options to living a leaner and healthier life.

However, I've never heard Weight Watchers claim to help Prevent Cancer, or high blood pressure or diabeties...etc.

PhlL,

I had some health issues and did not do it by choice. It did scare the cr** out of me. Bt I am better now.

I think I did something like that back in the80's for a while. It was OK but I just could not keep it up. I love veggies, salad, apples, but I have to have meat, not always but more than allowed on most 'real' eating plans.

PhlL,
but I have to have meat, not always but more than allowed on most 'real' eating plans.

I'm a Meat Eater as well, but I don't have to eat meat every meal or every day.
I try to keep it to one meal a week. But, I went 6 weeks No Meat when I started the 'Eat To Live' program, it was no hardship.

You'll notice if you read my first post on my first weight loss thread, my inspiration was Ren, who went 12 weeks without solid food. 12 Weeks!!!! that I wouldn't even attempt.

I have one Cheat Meal per week, some weeks it will be meat, some weeks it won't. Sometimes I want a Pizza, sometimes it's Fish & Chips. It's what I feel like when I feel like. I love Lobster, but I don't have to eat it every day or every week.

I don't know what 'real' eating plan you're talking about, but I suggest you try to eat as much G.B.O.M.B.S. as you can, and less of everything else. Or not. It's up to you.

"If You believe you can or can't do something, in either case you're probably right."

I could not ever imagine going back to eating the way I did before 'Eat To Live' any more than I could imagine lighting another cigarette. It'll be 10 years that I Stopped Smoking on Dec. 12th, it was all because of a post I read right here on BladeForums.

Anyone ready to Stop Smoking?

Stopping Smoking was the smartest thing I ever did, finding out about 'Eat To Live' was the luckiest.

Well, I just got off the scale and I'm back where I was before my Thanksgiving 4 day eating binge. I may even be down 1/4 of a pound. Next goal to get under 170 lbs. by my birthday in January.

Now, some of you must be saying, "What kind of Idiot starts a 'weight loss thread' around Thanksgiving?"
Well. the same kind of Idiot that stops smoking two weeks before Christmas, New Years and all of the temptations of the Holiday Season.

Look, I knew I would put on some weight during Thanksgiving, I didn't think it would be 10 lbs. But, I knew whatever I put on I could take off very quickly. I also knew that anyone who decided to start the program I was on would get similar results. No matter how stupid my timing was. The fact is there is no bad time to start eating smart. The same way there is no bad time to stop smoking.

IF you're ready, it is not only possible, it's easy.

My birthday has come and gone. I didn't hit my goal weight of 170 lbs. I put on too much weight over the Holidays. It's okay, I've decided to give up My Cheat meal and my Foster's until I'm down to 170 lbs.

I'm still enjoying the 'Eat To Live' program. I know I'll never go back to eating any other way. I know what happens when I do.

Good job on the weight loss. I have been eating more fruit and veggies lately. It's amazing how much better I feel.

I am going to check out eat to live thanks to you

Watch the movie Forks over Knives. It can be found on Netflix or Amazon it is very educating in what healthy nutrition is. The movie turned my life around! Lost 30 lbs lowered my blood pressure my cholesterol and put my type 2 diabetes in check! This is simular to the Furman plan. There is also web site under the name Forks over Knives.

Hulloo PhilL !

I have made a rare appearance to BF, and searched for some of my old Chat mates to see how everybody was doing. I found this thread and just had to crack up laughing.

I'm in the same boat as you started. Got myself into an 8 year desk job and nagging back issues, and am in the worst shape of my entire life. So I quit the desk job, took a huge pay cut to start a job within walking distance of work, and am scratching my beard in search of lifestyle changes that will help get me back on track.

And Voila... me ol' pal PhilL has a post that throws me a bone.

Haven't seen the show of which you speak.. but I'm going to drop the book onto my Kindle here in a few, and see if I can't follow in your footsteps. I may start a post here in Community just to motivate me to keep on the straight and narrow.

I'm glad you are doing well.... which is kinda why I got on BF in the first place... and I hope I find that the rest of the old crew is doing just as good.

BTW, I tried finding one of those old Spyderco Baby Jess Horn models I sold you so long ago, just to replace that one. Damn hard to find these days, so I hope yours is still treating you well. You ever get rid of it, you give me first dibs.

Now, to get that book downloaded....

Hey Vel, good to see you, or at least see your typing.
Man it's been too long.

The book and the PBS show by Dr. Fuhrman has changed my life. I will never go back to eating the way I used to. I love the program and I'm sure it's going to help me live a longer and healthier life.

I keep forgetting to update this thread, so now is as good a time as any. I'm of course still on the program. My weight loss has been stalled at about 180 lbs., but I'm now wearing size 32" jeans, last year at this time they were 42" jeans. I'm working two jobs, 14 hours a day so I have no time for a gym. I do still walk about 6 1/2 miles a day. I haven't been as strict with the meals, I really should be eating more salads, but other than that I'm eating right. I feel great, at 64 I take no medications of any sort. I'm up before the alarm clock every morning, and my energy levels are great.

I owe it all to "Eat To Live". If you or anyone has any questions about the book or about how I've been doing it please don't hesitate to email me at philip.labarbera@gmail.com

Vel, I'll leave you the Baby Horn in my Will.
Thanks for hitting this thread.

Awesome to hear your progress, Phil. If you are "stalled" at a weight but still improving your clothing size, perhaps your body composition is better in the muscle : fat ratio..... not a bad thing.

Download to Kindle complete. Shopping list to be generated, and it's onward and upward. I'll try to keep you abreast of progress.

Agreed, it's been too damn long, but hey.... we can still connect every now and then. Don't worry about leaving me anything in your will, buddy. It seems that your life is gonna be awesomely long, and that's good enuff for me.

Watch the movie Forks over Knives.

I meant to watch this movie when I first read your post, but I forgot.
I watched it today and it reinforces everything I learned in "Eat To Live" which is, "You can eat your way into Good Health". The way seems clear to me, more plant based food and less meat, dairy and other refined non-nutricious filler.

Our Standard American Diet, is SAD and making us sick. The solution is simple and the choices are yours.

Vel, please email me, I don't want to lose contact.philip.labarbera@gmail.com

Thank you for this thread. I am a 22 year old that is on the edge of obesity. Two years ago I lost my grandfather and decided to change my life. I started work at a grocery store in the produce department (lots of walking, standing, and heavy lifting.) At home I started body weight workouts and short runs. I practically lived off of 100 calorie Kellogg bars. In 5 months I lost 80 pounds and was down to 180. I was happy and healthy.

Then my senior year of college started and I left the grocery store to work as an intern for electrical engineering. Suddenly my time for working out went away and I started a desk job. Around this time I found my beautiful girlfriend and began eating out alot more with her.Fast forward and now I am a full fledged junior electrical engineer which is still a desk job. I am still with my wonderful girlfriend but and now back where I started weight wise. I am attempting to get back on track and drop my weight again. I will follow this thread as inspiration to continue on the right track thanks again guys!

Great news! My point was a few words where the doc said, there's this lamb and chick peas recipe where the total amount of lamb is 2 oz. among 4 servings. He said, "The meat is the garnish, just like when we were hunters and had to stretch the kill for a while after the initial feast. Oh, and by the way, there was no HF corn syrup, bread or refined crap. Now, go eat like God designed you to eat on a daily basis, not in the "limp-back-home mode" that we seem to be operating in these days "

I am attempting to get back on track and drop my weight again. I will follow this thread as inspiration to continue on the right track thanks again guys!

As a word of advice, Don't Attempt to get back on track, Get Back On Track!
Attempting or Trying, gives you permission to Fail. Don't Fail.
Don't read and be Inspired, get "Eat To Live" read it, follow it.
Today would be a good day to start. One week from today you will be 10 pounds lighter.

Email me.

PhilL, good to hear from you! I've been lurking here on BF for the last couple of weeks, catching up with everything I've missed since going to law school three years ago. Now, I'm a month shy of graduating and am beginning to have a normal life again. Well, until the intensity of bar prep kicks in. Bleah.
On a related note though, I've returned to regular exercise and healthier eating and am feeling and seeing results. I rarely ate processed food, and it's still a very small part of my diet. Now, my goal is to drop the last stubborn 10 pounds of fat while maintaining a reasonable exercise schedule during bar prep. I don't know that I'm ready to take on the methods prescribed in Eat to Live, but I've cut way back on meat and have upped the produce in my daily diet.
It's good to see I've not been wholly forgotten around here; it's even better to read about your results and beneficially changed life and health! I'm going to keep lurking around BF, as well as watching this thread, and I look forward to chatting with you more.

Hey TT, I'm glad you checked in here.
Wow, another lawyer, just what the world needs.. only kidding Congratz!!!

The last ten pounds can be tough. You don't need the Eat To Live Six Week program, just a few of things Dr. Furhman suggests, more salads, GBOMBS, fruit and less meat, dairy and processed food. Do that and you should be golden.

PhilL, I hear you about the number of lawyers in this nation. Finding a job is somewhat less than easy...

I've done what Dr. Fuhrman suggests in some regards - I often only eat meat once or twice a week, and I've almost completely eliminated processed food from my diet. I'll get fast food maybe once a month, and that's the extent of processed food in my life. I do eat a fair bit of dairy though, and my GBOMBS need to increase. My exercise is better than it had been, in part because of a re-commitment to exercise regularly, period, and in part because I had a truly heinous schedule last semester. These last 10 pounds... I'd be an underwear model if I could but drop the Tenacious Ten!
