I get OCD whenever I accumulate more than 5 pocket knives.

Do any of you folks limit how many pocket knives you keep after trying out models to see if they work for you or not?

I just put up 4 carry folders up for auction because I can't stand not using a good knife. Right now I have kept an Opinel #9, a mini-grip, mini presidio ultra, trapper slippie and a CRKT Drifter. I am going to probably add a Peanut or coke bottle to the slippie mix after I sell some knives and I still have to figure out which Spyderco to settle down with. I've gone through a whole bunch of Spydercos and I never end up keeping them. The Spydercos all seem to have awesome ergnos no matter the size though so I will have to think about that one.

For now though I have consistently kept on about 5-8 knives for utility purposes. Do you folks have a magic number of knives for your rotation/purposes? This seems silly in thinking it through but I guess its how my mind works. I feel like I am hoarding knives once I go above 10 as I'm not a collector of knives like how some folks do it.

i own 5 knives and make sure i use and rotate all of them. i guess i'm not too picky because of the five knives, they all work for me, or maybe i make them work for me. i don't own any show pieces so everything i buy i use and i make sure not to go above 10 knives. if i find myself over 10, which i won't be for a while, i will just donate the extras.

I have more than 5 knives but I won't keep any that I don't carry. If they don't have a purpose, I either sell them or give them away. Because of that philosophy, I have got rid of some really nice blades. But it also keeps me under 20 knives (fixed & folders) and helps me avoid the OCD.

Now, axes.... that's another story!

I have many knives, both fixed and folding. I do not care how many I end up with as 99% of them will see some use. But I am not a "collector" in the true sense. I am more of a knife accumulator, as many of us here are. I really don't know how many I have, and that's OK.:)

Lmao how many different style axes are there? I'm axe illiterate so its a genuine question.

I've got about 25 knives to choose from as far as EDCs. They might not get used for consecutive days in a row, but they all do get used.

6 is my magic number. 4 for razors. I will always have at least one true gents folder, one beater, and one flipper. The rest, who knows. It depends on my mood that day.

boy scout hatchet, rigger's hatchet, camp axe, house axe, hudson bay style axe, boy's axe, single bit axe, double bit axe, etc....

when you get hold of an old rusted out vintage axe head and restore it into it's original form on a good stick of hickory... it is a piece of art!

I have 10, which I keep in a display case that only holds 10. I just bought a new knife, so I'll be selling one off to keep it to 10. That is how I do it. But I understand the urge to own more.

I am the exact same as you. I keep it to four or five, or I feel as if I'm not using them enough. I don't like having things that I have little use for. It bothers me tremendously...

I always like to have one knife that I could freely take out in public (a gentleman folder of a sorts, or something as close to that), one user and one 'nasty piece of work'. Right now, my Navaja is both 1st and 3rd category- absolutely gorgeous and elegant, but once I open it people involuntarily take a step back :D

Actually, I'm quite concerned I might get OCD about collecting. E.g. my recent line of thinking was when/if I get the funds I'd like to get BM 710, but I fear it might be too big, so I'd like 943 as well (smaller, but elegant in different way). People rave about Spydercos, and I like Endura, so there is an option as well, but I'd need a Soldier's knife, nice one, huh? or a rescue knife- why not both? And I must get me an Opinel, I've handled them and they feel great... Mora must be something like that, should I get one? Whether I get it or not, I should get a fixed blade- even if I will most likely never carry it- should I get Mora (note to self, Fallkniven are to pricey and are not even to be considered, although I like that Frej), or something like ESEE 4? etc, etc (ad nauseum)...

Funny question. I have under 10 knives that I actually use. That said the others are just stuff I got from my dad or grandad that I keep, but am scared to loose. I've gone through a good number too. I seem to be a quality over quantity mode right now, except for the one dollar folder from Walmart last week. In my defense I flew out of state and hate being without a knife.

So for the guys that have a lot of knives say 20+ ...if something nefarious happened and you lost that collection...beyond the economic loss would you feel any loss beyond what money you put into it and how many would you actually replace in your collection with the same? If it were me... I would be sentimental about a crkt drifter but I wouldn't replace it or feel a thing. I would probably buy a bm sequel and not another grip or presidio.100% would get another opinel and trapper pattern though. The peanut and coke bottle is to be seen as is the spyderco. Outside of a ukpk I haven't warmed to spydercos as much as BM's even though spydies cut fantastic and I constantly keep trying new ones.

I have about 5 or 6 folders and no urge to buy anymore.

I EDC the same knife for about a year, wont change either, unless lost or stolen.

my kitchen knife collection, well grows monthly...

Are the kitchen knives for fun though? I've seen your food posts and that was definitely created via a learned and practiced hand. I.e. you could probbie go to work in an emergency with a chef knife and a sebenza and pull off your normal quality cooking with zero issues.

Well my kitchen knives at home are for home and I have another set of kitchen knives for work (sushi chef).

I sort of polish all my knives whether folder fixed or kitchen, they all cut very well, lets just say I can use any knife very comfortably.

If you carry a knife every day, sir, then maybe you have eleven? Or do you have an empty slot in the display case? And, do you alternately carry all of these, or are some just for show?
I would buy one more knife, so I always keep the display case neat and tidy...and full.
:)

I envy those that can keep stuff in a nice case for collecting.

I open and ruin everything I buy.

Too funny. Yes, there are two empty slots when I carry a small knife in my Levi's watch pocket and a regular folder, like a Sebenza, clipped to my front pocket. My wife bought me the display case as a way to curb my rampant knife spending, so I agreed to keep my collection to 10. It forces me to make tough choices.:)

Oh....that is devious mind control on the woman's part. Mine just waits to trap me in the kitchen before pulling open the utility drawer asking about why the contents of it looks different this month while looking displeased lol.
