I get OCD whenever I accumulate more than 5 pocket knives.

This is funny. I have all the knives I "need" and then some. but then I see some beautiful shiny new knife and simply must have it. I find myself wasting huge amounts of time "researching" them, looking for it on line, comparing prices, whatever. eventually I get so mad at myself for all the time wasting I just buy the thing so I can get on with the rest of my life, and I tell myself "Keep this one mint, and next time you "have to have" a shiny new knife, there it is. That might last 2 days, then its in my pocket, cause I feel like a fool for buying something I will never use. There is clearly something wrong with me, and probably joining this forum is not going to help.

You just described exactly what I do sometimes when I go on these knife runs...I think I feel better though as I've been pretty much able to keep it down to 10 pocket knives more or less! :p

I can't do the seven knives, one for each week. It defies my OCD logic circuit. I need everyone one of my knives to be purpose built. I don't know why but I do. Maybe because there are so many knives out there, I feel it would be illogical to settle for anything less. The knife has to align with my hand correctly, be sorta frugal since I have so many cheap knives like an Opinel that has outperformed other knives. It has to cut like nobody's business.

Then it breaks down to:
-what will I take for a short trail hike
-a nice user or two for my garden/yard work
-something small enough that fits in my pocket perfectly that I can EDC anytime, but HAS TO HAS TO have a usable length blade for at least 75% of normal daily chores and won't scare anyone
-slipjoint just because I like them :D this one is a guilty pleasure but in my defense they have excellent thin blade profiles
-one that goes near the glove box with serrations in case I need to cut us out of the car
-a solid knife to go into the emergency toolbox just in case

I think that covers it for me mostly all in all this comes down to around 5-10 blades or so.

This thread is forcing me to buy this knife.

what a gem.

LMAO I thought this thread is about keeping a limit in knives! Or does that one have a purpose?

Sometimes I take the train near the World Trade Center to go home to NJ after work and there happens to be this knife store called Korin. They have some of the nicest Japanese kitchen cutlery I have ever seen. The prices are mostly way beyond my wallet though. Like over $3,000.

I've only thought I seen guys using stuff like this in one sushi restaurant in NYC, it was during a business lunch at this place called Masa owned by Masa Takayama. The guys there all had super nice looking knives!

boy scout hatchet, rigger's hatchet, camp axe, house axe, hudson bay style axe, boy's axe, single bit axe, double bit axe!

You forgot the wife and the ex wife.

I have 14 folding knives currently, and all of them get used, some more than others. No ocd here about having to many. More like ocd about what the next knife will be.

So for the guys that have a lot of knives say 20+ ...if something nefarious happened and you lost that collection...beyond the economic loss would you feel any loss beyond what money you put into it and how many would you actually replace in your collection with the same? If it were me... I would be sentimental about a crkt drifter but I wouldn't replace it or feel a thing. I would probably buy a bm sequel and not another grip or presidio.100% would get another opinel and trapper pattern though. The peanut and coke bottle is to be seen as is the spyderco. Outside of a ukpk I haven't warmed to spydercos as much as BM's even though spydies cut fantastic and I constantly keep trying new ones.

Most of my collection are rare or discontinued knives and many can not be replaced. I picked them up for their quality and uniqueness. They are all cataloged and insured in case of any type of loss. I would probably replace some that I could. There are still tons of knives in this same category that I do not have so I may move to acquire those as replacements. Or I may go to other types of things to indulge in and learn about.

Nah. Nothing wrong with collecting knives. I get enjoyment out of having items I like. I don't have to use them to enjoy them.

why not have 7? One for each day of the week?

This is what I have. Used to have about 30 folders. Down to 7. Quality vs Quantity for me. I have about 7 fixed blades also that serve their purpose. Funny I used to be about accumulating as many as I could. Now my tastes have changed and prefer custom, midtech, and high end production. I couldn't afford more than the 7 I have. Lol

When I go to 711, there isn't many choices so im in and out fairly quick.

when I enter the am/pm next to my place, they have a massive selection and takes me forever to pick something.

I like collecting. I buy every knife with the intent of carrying it and using it. However, in some cases I acquire a knife that ends up being too large to carry or find it just isn't suitable for carry. I still keep those in the collection though because I like to fondle them and show them off to friends.

Out of the 10 or so that I own, about 3 or 4 of them rarely see any carry time.

Every knife I buy s with the intent to use it. With pocket knives, I usually carry them for a while and retire them after a year or two in the stable. That means I have a half-dozen users at any given time and an ever-growing collection of lovingly used knives. I know it is time to retire one when it has been with me long enough to have memories. I retired my Native (my first Spyderco) when I realized how ticked off I would be if I lost it. I have only sold a few knives, and then, almost always to friends.

My lifestyle changed a lot over the last couple years due to divorce and a new lady and her kids... Gone is the weekend house in the woods, haven't had dirt time in longer than I can remember, haven't had the backyard firepit from my old house. So my collection of large fixed blades has set in the case not having bit into wood or camp food in a long time. This has been bothering me a lot recently and for the first time I'm considering slimming down my collection of forty plus knives. If nothing changed I could get rid of everything but my leatherman and my favorite edc slipjoint. But instead I'm going to get back to doing some of the the things I needed knives for, and add a few other things to the list. Still will probably sell a few off though.

I have no problem admitting that I have a collection, but I like the idea of having a smaller, more meaningful, selection. I think I was up around 100 pieces or so before I started off-loading the knives I just wasn't using. Nowadays, if I won't carry and use a knife, it doesn't stay in my stable. I think I'm down to about fifty knives or so... :o

Yea i just cant have them sit there. Seems like a wasted knife to me. I am up to 7. Potentially one for each day of the week. Thanks for the idea as it keeps me from having to off something I didn't want to. Adjustable OCD :D THANKS!

I try to limit my collection to what I can use. I rotate between 4 edc knives based on what I am allowed to carry (work), what I want to carry (days off and nights out) and what I should carry (hikes, camping, outdoor fun...) so yeah. I limit my collection. Feel bad having knives that don't get used regularly.

I think I will eventually have a limit on the number of knives I own.
However, I am now in early stages of collecting, so I will just keep on buying for now
