I gots a grindie thing...

hopefully, 1/4HP (instead of 1/3HP) will mean a slower rpm speed. This will drive you crazy when you try to do some serious steel hogging, but you'll sure appreciate a slower speed when you go to higher grits.

let the disc sander be your friend too. ;)

What would I use the disc sander for? I thought I might use it for grinding down some sandwich meat but I've never liked ham dust very much.

It works great on Jimmy Dean's Hot pork(there's that word again) sausage.Just make sure the sausage is frozen first.

Anything you need flat - you'll want to shape it on disc sander. Let's say you decide to take handle slabs off and put new ones on one of your knives. When you make the new slabs, you'll want them as flat as you can get 'em. Careful use of the disc sander will do that for you.

Should you decide to make a guard/bolster you'll want to flatten that too (the glue-up side, by the way).

The disc is great for general profiling and the adhesive discs are cheap. You might want to invest in a belt dresser too, they make the belts last a bit longer.

The belt dresser is a big gum eraser. They're great when you are sanding wood, as the wood clogs the belt up. Sold in the home improvement stores near the sanding belts.

I seed some o demz the other day. Looks like cheese, yes?

How does one remove the adhesive disc when it's done for?

Bruise - go cheap here....don't get the "big eraser" - all you need is an old shoe sole. That's what I use (well, used to use.....don't use anything now).

Dan, why don't you use anything? I found that the erasers clean the belt nicely.

Dont worry about removing the adhesive discs, they come of the (aluminum?) plate very easily. The most you will ever have to do is slip a screwdriver or knife tip under the disc to get a good grip. But, dont let them wear down to tatters, then you might have a tough job getting all the little pieces off.

the kinds of belts I use for grinding don't benefit from cleaning. The ones I use for handle shaping would, except I'm really hard on them. So, I stopped doing it.

But I do recommend it for most folks....especially ocassional users, or anybody using Alum/Oxide belts.

I've seen the leather belts at Jantz Supply (www.jantzsupply.com).

How well do the leather belts work? I would like to get a 2x72 leather belt for my grinder, but it's $35 at Jantz and I don't know if it's worth the investment. Besides, stropping by hand doesn't take long anyway.

Bruise,

How are you coming along with the dishing stump? Between it and the grinder, you should be very entertained!

I got a stump-like object from my brother a coupla weeks ago. It needs to be cut down some because of some cracking. I'm still not sure how I'm gonna dish it. I figure I'll try a chisely thing. I'd try using fire but I doubt the neighbours would care for it.

Bruise?

If you can grill burgers, you should be able to put coals in the stump and let them smolder there. Scrap out the live coals, gouge out the brunt wood, then repeat as necessary.

It' s messy, but less labor intensive.

Best of luck.
