I gotta start doing these again...

Thats funny. We call them pin constellations too.

Well I'll be in the minority here, as I don't like the multiple pins. I now own three FF knives and I just can't see any of them with anything beyond the way they are. Simplicity in function and form.

Andy:

Perhaps you can find inspiration within the patterns shown on this coin. There are many potential patterns within the overall design that can be isolated. Of course, don't stare at it too long ;)

I dig it, would be cool to have some knives with more unique pin placement and sizes pop up from time to time.

That swirling pattern might look neat with a tapering in size of the pins

I like that style. Good heavens would it be difficult though. I've made a few knives, your choices are pretty minimal. It wouldn't be hard to sand them down but it would be difficult as all hell to get the hole the right size to match the pin. Every hole would have to be custom. I'm sure the fbf can handle it though, they are masters of the craft.

You'd probably want to cnc drill the pattern on both scales and not the tang. Inlay the pins a couple of mm or whatever. Not sure if Andy has a cnc mill in the shop though. It would definitely make for a unique one off. :)

You can buy lots of different common diameters of micarta rod. That isn't the problem. The smaller pins swirling the drain would make the big hole placement even trickier. We do this by hand at a drill press. We have no CNC equipment at Fiddleback Forge yet.

To me, the everything being made by hand is part of the special recipe.

WOW... Dame these are the sexyest pin outs I've seen!!! I want a few of them now!!! When will we start to see some?

Hey Andy, not sure of the practicality of this, but how about ditching the 'traditional' pin placement completely (as in, lose the four pins in the bolster area), and have the ONLY pins on the knife be part of your "swirl" or "caterpillar" or "constellation" … ?

Also, have you ever thought about doing THREE bulls-eye holes along the length of the handle - kinda like an exaggerated version of hollow pins, but with the AR trademark look … ? (Just a thought from a fevered 3 AM brain … )

The regular pins are structural and necessary. The constellation pins are only through the scales and do not pass through the steel.

I really like the trinity pinout. The swirling drain effect looks pretty cool. would like to see that with natural pins on a shadetree handle.

I think that would look appealing. Would limit choices of handle materials to what they can match the 'structural' pins to, but the crew does an awesome job at blending the pins into the handle material on the knives they do that too.

Need a photoshop jedi to throw some of these together for a visual

These aren't some of those "Art to hide Oops" handle applications ......... are they?

(Some of my best artistic innovations started with a few expletives from the dark side.)

Either way I like 'em Andy. Should have had some on the table last weekend.

Andy,
Love these. The variations on the handles are really interesting. Just shows more of the quality, dedication, and creativity that is produced by you and the crew at FBF. Trinity, Mosaic, Constellation - oh my.
The more I see them... The more I want one, or two.

That Carver is my dream knife for sure by far! The pins with those scale combo just make the knife. What a awesome back porch whittler!
