I had my Southard for 5 minutes, and this happened... **update #2**

Quick Update (March 24th): I sent the knife to Spyderco for repair on the same day I posted this thread. I'd rather not attempt to fix the problem myself and damage this beautiful knife.

Another Update (April 30th): Still waiting, and no word from Spyderco (I haven't tried to contact them yet). I sent my knife in on 3/22, it got there on 3/25, and at that time they said that their turnaround time was at 3 weeks. It has been a little over 5 weeks (36 days) since they received the knife. Should I email them or contact them about this? Could it have gotten lost in the mail or something? And does Spyderco contact you when they send your knife back to you, because I've had other manufacturers do that?

To me, 5 weeks is an incredibly long time to fix a problem so simple like this. If this ever happens again, I'm just going to try and fix it myself or bring it to someone to get fixed.

Update (May 1st): I called them, and they said that they shipped it out on the 29th of April. I should be getting it within the next few days.

---------------------------------------------

When I opened the knife, it made a rattling sound. I found out that the pocket clip was a little loose; so I took off the pocket clip and bent it a little. I went to go put it back on and the screw head popped off. Without any effort, it just broke. It's a great little knife though, too bad I can't carry it for a long time now.

This is frustrating beyond belief.

That sucks, but it's definitely a warranty issue. Send it to the spa and they'll fix it.

Which happened first....the call to Spyderco to have it taken care of, or this rant thread?

Certainly not the norm. I've had mine off at least 3 times while stonewashing the clip and tightened the heck out the screws every time. Spyderco will take care of you indeed.

I contacted Spyderco before this, they told me to send it in. I thought I'd just rant because I love this knife so much, and now I can't have it (for a week or so).

You could just take it apart, then get a punch to push the screw out. I don't have mine with me right now but I think the screw goes through. Then just ask spyderco to send clip screws. I can't remember if you can access it from the other side though and then you would have to work it through the threads.

I keep #2X56 TPI stainless pan head screws lying around. I also have a screw cutter that handles this size and can make any length screws. I would disassemble the knife and drill out the screw from the back side. With any luck, the drill would snag the screw and push it out.

This is the size screw you need, if that helps: 2.5mm x 45 - TORX - Button Head - (.178/.155/T6)

You could also use a .110/.155/T6 I think, or anything longer and just cut off the excess.

That won't work. He needs a metric size. Made in Taiwan. :)

Actually, I just remembered. I have an extra screw. I got a Ti lowrider clip and it came with a longer screw that goes into the standoff rather than the other clip hole (which is covered) so I have the extra one. If you can get the old one out of the hole I'll send it to you. I think I can just stick it in a regular envelope. I doubt that Spyderco will just send you one, because they probably want to handle the knife. At least Kai is like that for any Asian-made knives.

Update: Alternatively, you could just order the Ti Lowrider clip from STR.

I keep 2.5mm X 0.45mm/thread screws lying around also. My screw cutter also handles this size. I used to use a lot of these when the smallest helicoils I could find were 2.5X.45. Now they make helicoils all the way down to #0 X 80TPI. I usually measure the screw to be replaced with a micrometer and a thread comb.

I'd be irritated too. Sucks to have to send in a new knife.

Removing the screw shaft that's broken off below flush in the titanium scale is not a task that everyone is going to be able to accomplish without risk of damaging the knife.

Yeah I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. Its a small hole and if you mess up the threads in the scale then your screwed. (pun not intended)

Don't even try to get replacement screws from Spyderco or anywhere else. I exhausted that hunt after almost a month. After contacting Spyderco directly several times and after almost two months, a very nice lady at Spyderco personally found some used (but in good condition) screws and mailed them out to me (not per company policy) and actually sent me contact information for a local company who could help me out with other issues. The best thing to do is either return/exchange the knife or file a warranty claim and mail the knife in to Spyderco.
