I hate super steels- please reccomend me a manufacturer of super soft steel

I have a lot of sympathy with this view. I prefer a fairly tough steel that is easy to sharpen over maximum edge retention any day.

Hey colubrid, try a traditional or two. Both GEC and Case still make a carbon steel knife with blades that cut well, hold a good edge, and are easy and fast to sharpen up.

I can identify with the OP. Life is short, and with all the fishing and other stuff I like to do in my retirement, I don't want to waste a moment more than I have to sharpening a knife. I like a knife I can touch up on the nearest coffee mug bottom or car window top. A smooth stone out of the creek can do also. If I need diamonds or gizmos to sharpen my knife then I'm not interested. There's fish to go catch.

ATS34. 154cm (like all your emersons). 420HC. 440C. I run, whatever knife I use that day, on the ceramic sticks when I get home for 30 seconds. All my steels are razor sharp. I never spend much time unless I hard use a knife. Also, do you ever use a steel to straighten the edge instead of wasting hours on a stone. Sometimes the edge is just rolled a bit and can be fixed easy.

What about NOT HAVING TO SHARPEN a knife for a very long time then taking maybe 30 seconds or less to touch it up because as you said wasting your time sharpening.

Would make more since than having to sharpen more often and wouldn't waste as much time. ;)

That said I have been using Silicon Carbide for over 40 years to sharpen and or touch up my knives, ceramics are also wonderful things too that will make quick work of ANY STEEL.

I would look at something in 420HC or 440B or C. I used to avoid buying Buck knives years ago because they were such a pain in the butt to sharpen. Years ago, 440C was a super steel, but times have changed. Look for hardness in the 56-58 range or about what Case and Victorninox use.

Yes to GEC 1095.

Come on people, he obviously meant VG-10, no need to accuse him of trolling just because his opinion is different.
He simply stated his preference for "lower-grade" steels, not "OMG liek all super steels sukc !!!1"

I happen to prefer finer-grained, easy-to-sharpen steels as well. Give me 1095, AUS 8 or 14C28N any day over S30V.
Different strokes for different folks.

That said, I like D2 for some odd reason, as long as I don't have to reprofile it or let it get too dull. I guess that the thing for all carbide-heavy steels - touching them up before they get to the point where they're really dull.

More reason to get some S35VN or 3V ;)

It was 10:36 by west coast time. His post says "yesterday" on it on my screen.

Okay. I guess I don't really get what you are getting at. The guy lives in the eastern time zone according to his location, just like me. For us he posted it this morning at 1:36 am.

Anyway, not really that important.

(...) So can anyone tell me a few companies that make great, high quality in function and prescion Stainless Steel folders where the money is not all in the super steel and has super soft steel that is easy to sharpen?? (...)

Buck offers a good selection of quality modern locking one-handers in 420HC. They make good traditional patterns, too. If you don't mind slipjoints, Victorinox and Case also use softer stainless steels that're easy to sharpen without a diamond hone.

Side note: I've also had very good results with Sandvik stainless steels, especially in thin stock. A thin blade can make a world of difference come sharpening time, imo...

Good luck, OP! :)

My nomnomzaan was made from sharp cheddar cheese. That's pretty soft.

Ohhhhhhhh. VG-10........that makes more sense

But still, you have to wonder why he hasn't returned to clear that up, especially since he's been asked by myself and others multiple times.
And then there's still the whole CRK=Sebenza thing. Does he really just not know after 10 years on this forum that Sebenzas are CRKs? Seems unlikely.

As for whether or not he's a troll or just has an opinion....He kinda just threw this whole controversial topic out there and hasn't posted since. Smells like trolling to me.

Also, notice how the title is worded. Read it again and tell me it doesn't sound like a joke to you. Come on, I LOLed pretty hard the first time I saw it, figuring there was absolutely no way it was for real.

"super soft steel" -- nice one. And guys, this *was* posted on 4/1, despite earlier claims to the contrary.

I don't recall any manufacture beating Tops in this area. They use stuff like 1075 and low heat treats. I watched one review there the blade bent and twisted so badly the knife had to be dropped from the review. Some of the Tops knives are way, way softer than Bucks 420 HC, which isn't really soft at all. :)

No doubt is fishy at best. That said, it is a fact that it was posted on 4/2 @ 1:36 am in the OP's Eastern Time zone.

Maybe you are right, but I just don't like it when people call someone a troll just because they have a different opinion, see the recent thread on ZT designs.

Agreed, that's why I didn't do it based on his opinion. It was based on the way he said it.

Notice my serious response earlier in the thread

Okay, but the mods shut that down for being, and I quote, "a troll thread" because it was.

If the OP wants to come back and continue the discussion then great. Otherwise, we can only speculate.
