Update:

I got the PM2 and immediately put it up for sale. Wasn't a fan at first just by the looks but the more I played with the compression lock and the knife the more I loved it.

EDIT:

My original purchase fell through. BUT I just made a deal tonight on a new PM2! So I again have my first Spyderco on the way!

I'm a BIG fan of Benchmade. Their warranty, customer service, and products have always left me happy. With that being said; I wanted to get a new EDC that was lighter (4 ounces or less), slimmer, and carries well. Something that was office friendly as well. BM's folders generally seem to be on the bulkier side. I may end up going back with the 940 (killer blade) but I prefer something other than aluminum handles and I'm not willing to pay for CF so I decided to try a Spydie Paramilitary 2.

I wish Spyderco did blade replacements like BM.

P.S.

This IS NOT a Benchmade vs. a Spyderco thread; it's more a "I'm trying something new thread." :)

Great knife and carries well. Don't know if I would consider it office friendly. People can be funny when they see someone pull out a knife to use as they are intended to be used. Good luck with it. I carry my Para often but then I'm retired.

It's a bit shorter than a 710 and doesn't have a recurve to it. I think it looks a little less threatening. Time will tell.

I never thought i would commit blasphemy by buying my first Spyderco being a more so Benchmade fan but i did.I'm with you thinking BM knives are more bulkier than Spydies cause for the most part they are and that's why i like them. They seem more durable to me.But sometimes you don't need all that power and want to carry something lighter, cuts with more precision, and more controllablity. That's wear syderco shines. Only Spyderco i have so far is Para 2 (have a Chapperal that has arrived but it's sitting in my APT. building office and can't get it til Monday.:grumpy:)but damn it's growing on me. Feels so good the hands, everything is placed where it's supposed to be, and just well thought out design. My way of thinking is prescion cutting, lightweight, superslicer Spyderco. Knives with more durability, great chopping performance capibilites as well as slicing, I think Benchmade. Every knife has a different purpose for what it was made to do. Still like my Benchmades best but love the Para 2 and ain't gonna be my last Spyderco. Although did not like the Endura much at all. Got sent back to seller. But the Para 2 made me betray Benchmade and become a Spyderco fan. I have knives from every company almost though. But going from Benchmade to Spyderco makes you seem like more of a trader for some reason. Maybe it's the continous battle between the two insects in nature that makes it seem wrong to like them both.:)

The PM2 is a nice knife. It has great ergos and is pretty light. Compared to the 710, it is slightly slimmer, a bit shorter, and about half an ounce lighter. The 940, of course, is a much smaller knife (although it still packs nearly a 3 1/2" blade). The 710 really didn't resonate much with me, but I'm pretty fond of the 940. I'd say the PM2 compares more (in size) with the 710.

I have owned one BM 710 and one other (forgotten) BM folder in 154cm. They were good folders.
I have owned many Spydercos, mostly from $100-$250.
Now I have only three PM2's: a standard black G10 in S30v, a Brown sprint in S35VN and a green Sprint in CTS-204P.
I have found it to be COMMON that my Spydercos have solid lockup, with NO lock-rock or blade-wiggle. You will be happy.
Here is an older thread that looks at the 710 and the PM2, along with the ZT 0550.

Congrats, that's an excellent knife. Careful though, it's a slippery slope.... hehehe.

The truth is, spydercos are the only folders I buy now. Their ergonomics and "form follows function" approach to design coupled with the way Sal participates on the forums and listens so closely to what we want makes it hard for me to look at anything else. Come over and introduce yourself in the spyderco forum. You'll get LOTS of opinions on the pm2 over there.:D

I cant think of a better introduction to Spyderco and I dont think you will have a problem with the PM2. In fact, I am confident that you will love it. If not they are usually easy to get rid of. Good luck.

I too am a Benchmade-to-Spyderco convert. Spyderco has some wacky designs that I'd never buy, while I pretty much like everything BM puts out. But the Spydies I do have I carry and use, beat and abuse, and they work for me every time.

They're funky at times, but ridiculously functional.

I remember being a benchmade only guy and how I felt weird buying a Spyderco. Haha now I just laugh cause that was so long ago. Great choice for a first Spyderco! If you're going to try out a spyder, I'd def say the pm2 is the way to go.
I agree with an above post tho that I don't know how office friendly it is. I work in a warehouse and I don't pull out my pm2 ever. But that doesn't mean I don't have it on me at least haha.
Good luck with it!

I'm in the same boat. I was all benchmade and wouldn't even consider a spyderco until I picked up a griptillian with a hole instead of a thumb stud. That's when I started thinking maybe spyderco was onto something. I broke the ice with a native 5 and haven't looked back. Now I don't even a benchmade and haven't even got any interest in any of their models.

Love my BM's...Love my few Spyders as well. Plan on several more. Why I havent acquired a PM2 yet is beyond me. The BM 710 is one of my all time favorites, carried one for years. What I loved was its slimness, among other things.

Reason for my post:

For some reason, I thought the PM2 was much thicker/wider than the 710. After all the pics and vids Ive seen....retardo,.. never held one. OK, you can go ahead and roll your eyes now.

Thanks for the pics Flarp

I own several Benchmades, only a couple Spyderco's (Manix 2 and PM 2) and I have to say the fit and finish, edge, and overall build quality on the Spyderco's blows Benchmade out of the water. I still like the Axis lock most though...
