I'm smoking a cigarette, briefly thinking about my mortality. I'm only 27 but that thought does come to mind now and then.

When I meet my maker... I hope...

God allows smoking (pipe, cigar, coffin nail, whatever). The habit has brought me much comfort over the last 13 years.

God will let me set up a lathe, mill, drill press, and belt grinder in my own little corner of heaven.

I often ponder that thought myself. I am sure He will allow knife making. He designed us to do stuff. Floating around on puffy clouds with harps is not my idea of a good time. I can handle good cigar smoke in my corner, but not cigarette smoke. Since I quit a few years ago, I can't stand that smell.

Of course you'll be allowed to smoke. But not in heaven.
Where do you think all that volcanic ash comes from?

Smoking may bring you comfort now, but later in life it will be misery, as you are trying to breathe and you can't. Emphyzema and COPD are no fun.

Quit now, while you are young, and can breathe.

In heaven, things are very different. We don't know all about it. But, scripture does give us a few insights.

In our world, gold and saphire are expensive and highly valued. We adorn ourselves with jewelry made of these precious materials. And yet, in heaven, they do with these materials what we do with gravel and tar; they pave the streets with gold and saphire. That's how different things are in Heaven.

Will there be knives? Oh yes; One of the few personal things God tells us about Himself is that He is a knife and sword collector. But, things are different. God's own personal sword has blade made not of steel but of fire. How you grind that, I don't know.

So, know this: things will be different, but they will be wonderful.

I can't wait to be reunited with my mother and father and a few springer spaniels who have gone ahead.

Hey Matt, I know you're situation is different because of everything you've been through. And I know smoking has brought you temporary comfort, but think about life! Not mortality. You're only 27.

You've got all of death to think about mortality. Chai...life is all that's important right now.

I have no idea if there will be smoking in heaven. Maybe there will be, maybe even with no repercussions.

But not here on earth. That we know for sure. Here smoking brings lots of trouble. Like heart attacks, like my father had not too long ago. Big trouble. Big trouble for the person suffering the repercussions of years of smoking and for the people around them.

Besides, smoking costs so much money nowadays. Money that is better spent on the healthy vice of collecting custom knives.

he he he :)

Take care bro.

Whoever's going to have to pick up all the cigarette butts, isn't going to be calling that place Heaven :D

I love smoke too. I also love scotch, and beer, and wine, and driving fast (not with the alcohol mind you). But, if I were to do these things day in day out, I'm only begging to shorten my lifespan. Moderation is the key. You can enjoy those cigars, but if you do so say once or twice a month, you'll be a lot happier when your older. Communication and breathing is much better with your tongue and both lungs.

My mother got emphysema after giving up smoking a decade earlier.
She died from it after fighting for every breath for many years.
Anyone who smokes should watch someone die a slow grueling painful death by emphysema that takes years to finally finish you off if they have trouble quiting.
Oral and throat cancer should scare your desire right out of you as well.
27 is young. You have a lot of good years left. People can live good lives
3 times your age these days.
Take care of yourself now, don't be sorry later.

my father had lung cancer. he was in remission for ten years ad died suddenly when in hospital for another matter. he smoked most of his life ad died at 70. i was not close to him at all so his death did not have the impact it could have, but smoking did number on him that was sad to see.

Matt,
I don't think any of us are going to be worrying about smoking when we get to where we're going.
Just my opinion. :)

Nice five word post, Lycosa ;)

If I make it to heaven, I just hope there's good beer. I'll be happy if there's lots of microbrews, but I'll request a transfer if God's got a Budweiser sign in the window.

Call me unamerican if you want, but American style beer (Bud, Coors, et al) just isn't beer and I refuse to spend eternity drinking it.

EDIT... Just send me wherever has the most Jagermesiter and Markers Mark and I'll be content to push rocks or play a harp.

I used to smoke for about 8 years before I quit at age of 22. My father smoked for 15 years and also quit.
You would not quit unless you really want to and make it your goal. Charlie Mike, I completely understand how you feel when you need a cigarette to overcome your stress, but remember it's only in your head, once you quit it would be different.
You must understand all the benefits of not smoking. They are: saving $$$, leaving potential risk of long cancer and heart disease, better night sleep, better breathing, more strength, better overall feeling. There are many modern products that may help you to battle your habit.
As for Heavenly things, everyone should be first worrying about getting there, not for how it's going to be.
And there is no "if". If you are uncertain about your destiny yet, better hurry up, the time is ticking and for everyone it may end today or tomorrow.

Do some math. Count up the number of packs of cigs you smoke per week, then multiply that for the year. Do the numbers seem big? Then calculate how much they will cost over 10 more years and add increases for all the taxes they keep piling on them.

In heaven, its any guess, but its possible that we will be able to smoke cigs that will never drop ashes and packages that will never run out. Oh and be able to take swims in pools filled with single malt scotch. And the list goes on.....

Sounds like heaven LOL
