I just got my SOG Pillar in, and boy am I disappointed. What a letdown.

I guess it's fortunate that I caught up to this thread: factory edges have been on my mind...
So at what point does a poor grind become an issue? After all: they are an easy thing to fix...
If you get a dull one: at what point do you return it?

For me, if I were mad enough about the dullness of an edge to start a thread like this, I'd return the knife or contact the company first. Further, being disappointed in the sharpness of a new knife does not a bad knife make. Gotta give it a chance before authoring a thread like this, IMO.

I really don’t think we should be dictating why people can and cannot start threads for topics. That’s a rather slippery slope to slide down. If you don’t like a thread, better to ignore it instead of going into every thread you don’t like to let the OP know why you disapprove.

More to the OP’s post:
L Lasador SOG is generally hit or miss, and you won’t get a lot of customer service support from SOG. I read somewhere around here about a pocket clip replacement someone filed taking forever. If I were you, I’d return the knife and try to use that $200 toward a brand with a more solid reputation on quality control and customer service. I have seen a few SOG knives that appeal to me, but I’ll never spend high amounts on SOG. I see SOG purchases as a one way street. I have a SEAL pup fixed blade I think was $40, and that’s the limit for me. Experiences may vary but if you can’t depend on them after the sale, what’s the point?

Lets face it no 200.00 knife should be dull out of the factory . Especially since theres plenty of knives for way less with amazing edges on them theres no excuse for it.
Agreed. I think there are particular brands (SOG, CRKT, for example) where the more you pay doesn’t mean more hands on work for quality and function. Some of these brands slap micarta or copper on the knife bump up the steel, and charge an extra $100-$150.

If I’m paying $200 for a knife, that sucker better pop out of the box ready for years of uninterrupted use. I get that assurance from Spyderco and Benchmade. Not so much SOG.

...Anyway, given your propensity of hyperbole considering all your other threads with extreme view points, it is hard to tell how serious of an issue this is....

I’d sharpen it, use it, and then decide if I was disappointed. Factory edges are USUALLY acceptable but rarely impressive…anyone who’s bought a ton of knives knows that.
Yup. And if you are going to actually use your knives, you'll be sharpening them in no time anyway.

Well my new Sog Trident AT-XR I recently received came with a fairly decent edge but not shaving sharp. Just hoping I have good luck with it overall.

So let me get this straight… receiving a dull knife is 100% acceptable, because the onus is on the purchaser to sharpen it if it’s dull?

Sorry, I disagree with you. It is unacceptable to receive a brand new knife that is dull from the factory.

I get the feeling you’re being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, because I know if you received a dull knife, you wouldn’t be pleased about it.

This simply boils down to:

People who sharpen their knives don't care how sharp it is from the factory because they're going to put a better edge on it anyways.

People who don't sharpen their knives, do care because they can't put a better edge on it themselves. They're paying for the edge and want their moneys worth.

I would prefer all my new knives to come without being sharpened ; ) Seems I can only get that when I RMA a blade....

Obiously, AOG doesn't see producing sharp knives as a big deal. So I do not see SOG Knives as a big deal.

Me too. Not sharpened at all is very much desirable to poorly sharpened or worse over sharpened. Seems most factory knives come with wonky choils slight recurves and rounded tips. Very frustrating.

I laugh when I here people send a knife back to the factory to be sharpened, they are the last people i want touching my blades.

Interesting. Do people that put air in their tires care if their car shows up from the dealer with 4 flat tires? Do people that cook at home care if their food shows up to the restaurant table without being cooked?

I don’t. People that sharpen knives 8-10 hours a day for a living tend to be better at it than internet snobs that do it as a hobby for a couple hours a week.. although the hobbyists would never admit that.

Your retort was amusing.

I don't know how else to explain this to you. I thought it was crystal clear.
